Glide's 4th Annual Best of 2006: From the Artists' Perspective

By Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2006," and a peek into what to expect in '07.

Best Albums of 2006
  • Dr. Dog: Takers and Leavers
  • Black Keys: Magic Potion
  • Tom Petty: Highway Companion

Favorite Live Performance of 2006
  • Bonnaroo: Steve Earle, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Buddy Guy, My Morning Jacket, Dr. John, Tom Petty…Bonaroo was fucking spectacular. Those two days were full of so much delicious noise. We've played a lot of festivals, but you can't dream up a better bill than the 2006 Bonnaroo lineup.

Your Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2006
  • AllGood Festival in West Virginia. We all left a piece of our soul on that stage (and a few pieces of my guitar.)

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • The Departed - There's only one Scorsese.

What Song From The Past Year Do You Wish You Wrote
  • "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley. That song could buy seven-thousand solid gold toilets and a partridge in a pear tree.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2007

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure
  • I used to indulge in those celebrity magazines, but now I most enjoy sneaking off during recording breaks here in Los Angeles to hit on this 16-year-old parking lot attendant who works at the grocery store across from the studio. Do I feel guilty about it? A little.

Favorite Site On The Net
  • I really don't go online at all. Seriously. But I designed our website so I feel a little obliged. (www.gracepotter.com)

A memorable/humorous/classic moment on the road in 2006
  • Too many to count. None worth mentioning without my lawyer present.

Best YouTube Video You Saw This
  • You Tube is on the internet, right? That's a Gracie no-zone. But I did use the modern marvel a while ago to find that Cadillac commercial that uses an M. Ward song. No one believed me. Go see for yourself.
