Glide's 5th Annual Best of 2007: From the Artists' Perspective

By The Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2007," and a peek into what to expect in '08.

Best Album(s) of 2007

  • We all really enjoyed the new Spoon and Radiohead records. On tour, no one complained when the driver put either of those albums on.

Favorite Live Performance of 2007
  • Recently, this year, we went on tour with Richard Swift and were lucky enough to watch him every night. I don't get to as many shows as I should, but after watching Richard play every night I didn't feel too bad about what I was missing while on tour.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2007
  • When we were playing Lollapalooza and [drummer] Jamie [Levinson], inadvertently, threw his stick about 15ft. from the riser his drums were on. No one but him and I were aware of it and thought it was hilarious. Recounting it doesn't do it justice.

Classic Album or Artist You Discovered This Year

  • We all reacquainted ourselves with Bo Diddley recently and heard things we hadn't before.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • We all enjoyed Superbad a lot.

Song From The Past Year You Wish You Wrote

  • Personally, the new Grizzly Bear track, "My Little Brother (electric)," is amazing. I don't understand how they approach the songwriting process, but I'm thankful that someone is creating music that boggles my mind and forces me to reappropiate my ears.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2008

  • Tim & Eric

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure

A Memorable/Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/road in 2007

  • Playing with The Pogues at the Fillmore. We got to open up for a band that we have all loved for quite some time. We'll all look back upon that performance as being a highlight of '07.
