Glide's 5th Annual Best of 2007: From the Artists' Perspective

By The Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2007," and a peek into what to expect in '08.

Best Album(s) of 2007

  • Radiohead, In Rainbows, If only for the stir.  The music’s great, as is everything those blokes do, and the statement will be remembered.

Favorite Live Performance of 2007
  • Steve Earl & Bela Fleck’s sets at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park.  Earl hit with a DJ and an acoustic guitar on Sunday.  I thought it worked.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2007
  • Belting “Lovelight” with Donna Jean on Jamcruise.

Classic Album or Artist You Discovered This Year

  • Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s Volunteered Slavery.  I’d listened to it before, but it really got me through a tough emotional spot this year, along with some other good blues records.  Sometimes I just need to hear that much raw emotion all at once.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • No Country for Old Men.  Watching the Coen brothers at work is like taking a master class in film history.  Their range is phenomenal.

Song From The Past Year You Wish You Wrote

  • Anything Gillian Welch came up with.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2008

  • More Gillian Welch.  Please.  And Chris Thile’s new projects.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure

  • Late-night YouTube over-indulgence (see below)

A Memorable/Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/road in 2007

  • Getting comped ukuleles from a Hawaiian Luthier and playing them on stage that night.
