Glide's 5th Annual Best of 2007: From the Artists' Perspective

By The Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2007," and a peek into what to expect in '08.

M7 Martino, Charge 7

Best Album(s) of 2007

  • Alicia Keys - As I Am
I was impressed to hear how piano driven the songs are, and the quality of her playing on the record – the best she’s ever sounded.  It doesn’t feel entirely commercial, just great, straightforward songs.

Favorite Live Performance of 2007
  • Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the L.A. Sports Arena – The guy is so authentic.  Give him a guitar and he rocks the house, no matter how old he is.  No tricks, just solid musicianship.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • “Der Untergang” ("TheDownfall") – It’s an older film from 2004, though I didn't see it until this year.  I found the whole thing overwhelming.  Seeing people fight against such great forces for the good of the people is inspiring.  The movie’s theme is just as relevant to today, that people need to rally together against negative forces.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2008

  • Of course, Charge 7!

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure

  • Survivor’s “Eye of the tiger” – To this day, I still play the song regularly...not daily, but have been known to listen to it 10 times in a row on weekends. Drives my daughter crazy!

A Memorable/Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/road in 2007

  • We were filming a video in southern Spain, when a tractor tire blew.  We waited for 3 hours for the Spanish AAA to come.  With no one in sight, we ended up changing the tire ourselves with the camera crew documenting the whole thing.  Hardest work I’ve done in years, those tires are massive. Probably the first time I ever thought, I'd much rather be a cameraman than producer, judging by the big grin on his face as he filmed the insanity.
