Glide's 5th Annual Best of 2007: From the Artists' Perspective

By The Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2007," and a peek into what to expect in '08.

Best Album(s) of 2007

  • My current fave is Joe Henry’s Civilians. It’s chock full of great songs and I love his approach. Moody, Americana meets Tom Waits oddness. Really fun to listen to and gets deep if you let it.

  • Ry Cooder and Mavis Staples did a record, We’ll Never Turn Back. It’s a collection of classic civil rights movement songs. Really well done and vibey. It’s very authentic with some amazing grooves and feel.

  • Robert Plant & Allison Krauss Raising Sand was a cool surprise... the queen of slick bluegrass meets the wailing man from Zep, get help from quirky Americana-meister T-bone Burnett and make a really cool, unusual record... lots of surprises and good vibey music.

  • Derek Trucks Band Songlines. Derek offers really sweet playing and tone as well as interesting picks for songs. I particularly dig “Sahib Teri Bandi-Maki Madni”. Actually this may have been 2006 but it deserves mention.

Favorite Live Performance of 2007
  • Elvis Costello w/ Clover, Audie deLone at Great American Music Hall.  It was a great way to see & hear one of my all-time favorite singer/writers with a great old band from Marin (that was the band on Elvis’ first record!), the master of twang Bill Kirtchen and my good friend, the very soulful DeLone. A great once in a lifetime show.

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2007
  • I guess I’d have to say Ratdog’s set at Bonnaroo... it was both my last pre-cancer show and my last show of 2007 and I had a ball! (seeing The Police the night before didn’t suck either).

Classic Album or Artist You Discovered This Year

  • Levon Helm & the RCO all-stars. I’m just dipping into this great old album. yum.

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • If “most fun” counts as “best,” then Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I also loved the fantastic four/silver surfer movie. I’m a big kid when it comes to movies. I like being entertained more than being educated. That said An Inconvenient Truth and Sicko were also great movies and I’m really glad they got as much exposure as they did.

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2008

  • I can’t really think of any one artist. I just enjoy stumbling across new stuff that’s cool wherever it comes from and whoever it is.

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure

  • Too damn much mainstream TV! lol...

A Memorable/Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/road in 2007

  • Truthfully I haven’t seen the bus or the road almost all year and can’t think of one. sorry...
