Glide's 5th Annual Best of 2007: From the Artists' Perspective

By The Glide Staff

Everyone makes their standard "best of's," top 10s" and "year in review" lists, but each December we like to take that model a couple of steps further. We go straight to the artists to see where they found inspiration over the past twelve months, and we don't stop with just album choices. We dig a bit deeper and go for a broader picture of the past year in art. From classic moments on the road to their guilty pleasure confessions, this is a panoramic snapshot of "the best of 2007," and a peek into what to expect in '08.

Best Album(s) of 2007

  • It would be in bad form to list my own, right?  Honestly, this year I cut myself off and I only listened to the most wonderful and peculiar old albums. If you are a songwriter, sometimes this is a very useful thing to do.

Favorite Live Performance of 2007
  • Chamber Strings reunion show @ Double Door, Chicago

  • Scritti Politti @ Double Door, Chicago

  • Dan Deacon @ a very sweaty Pitchfork after party

Personal Favorite On-stage Moment/Show of 2007
  • Dave Wakeling of English Beat asking people to throw money on stage to raise money for the Smile Train foundation. The organization provides surgery to children with cleft lips, enabling them to smile for the first time. Each operation costs $200. Several new smiles were made possible that evening as the band played an elated version of "Tenderness" in a shower of crumpled greenbacks.

Classic Album or Artist You Discovered This Year

  • The Bunkers, "Bunk Up!", Nirvana (late 60s Nirvana, not the 90s band), The System, the whole Buddah Records catalog

Best Film You Saw This Year
  • This year I chose to only watch old movies that had been on my list for a long time. So for me, it was the best film year ever! And the popcorn was organic.

Song From The Past Year You Wish You Wrote

  • (3 way tie): "I Wish that I Could See You Soon," Herman Dune; "Long Limbed Girl", Nick Lowe; “Until I Kissed You,” Stephen Duffy

Artist You Are Most Excited About In 2008

  • If I couldn’t say Le Concorde, something would be wrong, no?

Your Latest Guilty Pleasure

  • Oh please. I no longer feel guilty about taking pleasure.

A Memorable/Humorous/Classic Moment on the tour bus/road in 2007

  • Spilling red wine in motel swimming pool in Ohio while skinny dipping at 3am; Running; Drive-by posture ratings on the trans-Pennsylvania interstate
