Is Pitchfork parting with their trusted brand of elitist indie snobbery, or does someone over there genuinely dig an album that many of us wretched jamband fans have been plugging for some time? Either way, imagine our surprise when the holiest than thou music blog gave the Benevento/Russo Duo’s Play Pause Stop album a 7.6 rating and pretty fucking solid review.
I, for one, welcome our new hipster overlords. I’d like to remind them as a trusted blogging personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil on the world wide web in their underground caves, aka Mom’s basement.
We’re welcoming a new weekly contributor into the fold today: Dan Alford’s been an audio guru on Jambands.com since the last millennium, but now he brings his craft to our little pretzel keg. Make him feel at home and download the goods.
“Herbie’s electric songbook? A treasure trove of crazy grooves. The first track here features a long and very funky Watermelon Man (originally on Head Hunters) by the one-off ensemble The Concept, featuring George Porter, Ivan Neville, Eric Krasno, Casey Benjamin, ?uestlove and Bill Summers recorded at BB King’s.
The second tune is the rarely covered Doin’ It (originally from Secrets) by AGP, and it seemed a shame to break up the slick jam, especially since the band’s final shows are next week. Track three, Hang Up Your Hang Ups (the opening track from Man Child), offers the most open interpretation here — no surprise it’s by the late, great Fat Mama. Finally, a straight ahead but totally satisfying Chameleon (also Head Hunters) by SCI features guest Darol Anger on fiddle. Enjoy.”
Watermelon Man – The Concept (9/26/02)
Doin’ It > SMB > Nuggets the Shaker – Addison Groove Project (10/22/04)
Hang Up Your Hang Ups – Fat Mama (Booty Quake Vol 1)
Chameleon – SCI (4/19/00 w/ Darol Anger)

In two weeks Ace and I will be down in Sunrise, Florida for the 5th Annual Langerado Festival. Ace last attended the festie in 2005, while I had the time of my life at last year’s. As someone who doesn’t get to many festivals, I think the best part of going is the enjoyment I get from checking out artists I haven’t seen before. So for this week’s edition of The B List, Ace and I will look at the five bands each we’re excited to see for the first time at Langerado:
1. Girl Talk: I wasn’t a big fan of the whole mash-up trend that seemed to hit its peak a few years ago, but then I heard Girl Talk’s Night Ripper. Night Ripper is the opposite of every other mash-up I’ve heard that were all ill-conceived and poorly executed. Greg Gillis, the producer who doubles as the one-man gang that is Girl Talk, expertly mashes together killer riffs and vocal samples from tracks’ artists that are familiar to even the most mainstream of music fans.
Gillis uses samples fast and furiously on Night Ripper. My favorite part of the album is the beginning of the track Peak Out, where he throws in samples from 2 Live Crew’s We Want Some Pussy, Pavement’s Cut Your Hair, and Wings’ Silly Love Songs in the span of about 20 seconds. Imagine hearing those three songs on the same radio station, let alone on the same track?
When the Langerado schedule was announced last week there was only one conflict that created a problem for me. Girl Talk’s set is right smack in the middle of Widespread Panic’s headlining set on Sunday. Luckily Langerado is small enough that I can catch the first few songs of Panic before heading over for the brief five-minute walk to the Swamp Tent where Girl Talk is performing. Hopefully I will miss drums and can get back to see the end of WSP’s set. –SB

This photo has been making the rounds, popping up all over the headiest message boards and dankest e-mail servers. And while there’s something inherently racist about our visceral reactions to Africans wearing Phish shirts, you gotta admit that it’s a pretty funny image. I like the guy in the middle with the Gin shirt.
Admit this too: That’s the first time you’ve ever seen a black person in Phish gear.
On Monday we posted Podcaster General Mike Newman’s semi-review of Yes’ Jon Anderson playing his band’s old tunes with Paul Green’s School of Rock All Stars at BB King’s. And if you’re counting, by the way, there were five possessive nouns in that sentence — just some terrible grammar on my part.
A helpful HT reader named BigDaddy2112 has been kind enough to offer up many more such YouTube videos of a much higher quality with additional asskickingness from this Anderson/PGSRAS run. Make sure to check ‘em all out.

Many thanks to the Daddy, and may I one day see the School of Rock in person.
At each of his last two solo shows at the Knitting Factory, Scott Metzger has nailed Richard Thompson’s 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. Now I’m hooked.

If you prefer a live on stage version, especially a live on where Thompson wears a ridiculously flimsy teal hat and a sleeveless shirt, here’s a great one from a Seattle festival in 1990, a year before the song’s release on Rumor and Sigh.
And many thanks a gentlemanly PT user named MangyDave for uploading this great version of 52VBL by the incomparable Del McCoury.
I’ve always been jealous of those people that know exactly how to tickle the ivories. Playing the piano has always been a dream of mine, yet for some reason I was always drawn to the guitar. This week’s edition of Grousing The Aisle features my favorite piano players, and while all of these men have adept skills at playing the clavinet, synthesizer, and organ, they are true piano men who most often are seen playing a regular ol’ acoustic. Check these shows out:
Stevie Wonder and Wonder Love 07/16/73 SBD (FLAC, MP3):
With his seminal album, Innervisions, about to be released, Stevie Wonder took his Wonder Love band to Europe for a series of promotional appearances. This show comes from Wonder’s appearance on German TV show Musikladen, where Stevie and his band started off by jamming before landing on Contusion.
The Higher Ground that follows is nothing short of intense, as Wonder pounds the rhythm on his Clavinet with authority. Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing takes the energy down briefly before the show-stopping (literally) closing combination of Living For The City and Superstition. This one’s a must-download…

From the extensive Over Before It Started files, it now appears the upcoming Van Halen 2.0 tour will not proceed as planned. Hey, at least this one lasted longer than the last reunion. At this point, we’d sooner pay to see these bat-shit crazies fight to the near-death on Pay-Per-View than play an actual show.
What else is happening on this fine, fine Wednesday morning?
Want to see Jim James in a powder-blue tuxedo? Head on down to Athens…
MMJ can really use a copy editor, but this sounds like an incredible event:
For all of you who missed your prom back in 1956 or 1986 or 2006 for that matter, we will be hosting the 1st annual MMJ 2 night prom, March 6th and 7th, at the fabulous, prom-ready, 40 watt club in Athens! The first time we walked thru those hallowed 40 Watt doors we said to ourselves, “this place looks perfect for a prom!” And now the dream will be a reality. The theme is a futuristic/retro under the sea vibe – costumes (tuxes, suits, robots, mermaid and lobster costumes, anything prom/ocean related) are not only encouraged – they are MANDATORY!!! NO ONE will be admitted without proper attire!** There will be cake, balloons, fishnets, classic cars, chaperones, spankings, and a whole lotta shakin goin on – 2007 style upin this bitch ya’ll. Come prepared to dance the night away, and make up for all the proms you missed…
Read on after the jump for an unconfirmed special guest (via Deputy Girard)…
This afternoon, the popular rock band Phish announced the release of both audio and video of 11/14/95, confirming the scoop we posted on Saturday.
The audio is available in both FLAC ($12.95) and MP3 formats ($9.95), while the video is available in MP4 format ($19.95). You can download individual video tracks for $1.99, but you must purchase the whole show in order to obtain the videos of Rocky Top and Manteca > Stash. The Phish is really dangling that Stash, no?
So I wanna post…some vids on the face of today…and then they’ll paint it.
Let’s lead off with Blind Melon’s Shannon Hoon hopping on stage with Guns N’ Roses in Chicago back in 1992 for a rousing rendition of Don’t Cry. This video is simply amazing, and I’m left wondering why Axl and Hoon never joined the WWF as one of those high-flying tag teams that delivered well-timed simultaneous drop kicks from the top turnbuckle (check out 4:10 into this clip). It all makes perfect sense. Incidentally, Axl’s outfit is worth emulating and bringing back into the mainstream fold: flannel shirt, giant crucifix, boxer briefs and Timberlands.

- Someone had the audacity recently to claim that “Joni Mitchell sucks.” I won’t say she’s the greatest musician ever, but every time I watch or hear her play I’m reminded of the incredible dearth of singer/songwriter talent in today’s music world. Just watch this version of Coyote from Santa Barbara in 1979 with Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny behind her. I always point to Joni as the quintessential ugly girl with big teeth that’s still sexy as fuck.
- There was a six-month span at one point in my Northwestern career during which Chicago’s biggest classic rock station played the James Gang’s Walk Away every time I got into my car. It was uncanny, every time. I had been a big fan of the song and never really complained, but now I’m kvetching about the withdrawal. I miss it. So here’s a sweet version of Walk Away from 1971 that, sadly, the radio never played.
- Most people under the age of 35 don’t really know how awesome the J. Geils Band was back in the day. I mean, seriously, they were off the freakin’ charts. And who doesn’t have room in their heart for a cool band with a great harp player named Magic Dick? Check out this Dick-led Whammer Jammer from Germany in 1979.
- There’s a harp segue here, but instead I’ll go this route: Grace Potter & The Nocturnals playing Mystery Train? Shit, that combines two of my favorite things in the music world. Thank you, Farmerstan.com.
- It’s been awhile since I’ve posted some Tea Leaf Green in any post, and that’s gotta change right now. So here’s One Reason from the Rock and Roll Band DVD they released on Halloween last year.
Are you not satisfied? Well, post some of your own ‘Tube finds below…
Alphabetically, I find it damn near impossible to even get into the Cs each time I call up the SugarMegs streaming archive. Those awesome fuckers host so many amazing shows on their site that unless I scroll down blindly or search for something specifically, I can never make it past the As and the Bs.
So don’t fight it, me thinks. Here are four hidden gems from the first two letters:
Maybe next week we’ll throw out some SugarGems from the Cs and Ds.
Usually when we mention teenagers on this site there’s an immediate follow-up mention of either Pete Townshend or Gary Glitter. But this post is about precocious teenagers, not the kind that are physically exploited for kicks.
Head Yes-man Jon Anderson fronted Paul Green’s School of Rock All Stars last night at BB King’s for a unique take on the catalog of his 70s progressive rock outfit, and Hidden Track Podcaster General Mike Newman was smart enough to shuttle himself over to Times Square for the evening’s action.
Read on after the jump for more of Newman’s photos and a couple of YouTube videos of Anderson’s fantastic collaboration with the PGSRAS. And if the videos are any indication, we all definitely missed the boat on this one…
I got my golden ticket yesterday, a seat at Fenway Park to see The Police. I highly recommend going in with a few friends on a fan club membership: Tickets were available for over an hour, and it is worth the $25 to not have to battle with the rest of the world during the general on-sale period.
Luckily I am off from my day job today, but that doesn’t mean I can’t share some links with my peoples:
- Los Lobos: Still kicking ass after 35 years as a band
- KSCA is a great radio station from California that has a series of live performances called Live From the Music Hall — Jefitoblog has compiled the best of those performances
- VH-1 Classic, my favorite television station, will remain on the air despite MTV firing most of the staff. Also in the post is news that the station will cover next month’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony live and in its entirety
- Jon Pareles spoke with The Police about its reunion tour for the New York Times Magazine
- A promotional video for Page McConnell’s new album
- Double J Jesse Jarnow gives us the 13th episode of his Frow Show podcast series
- Video of the Fab Faux performing I Am The Walrus on Letterman
