Friday Mix Tape: The San Francisco Sound

This Mix Tape was inspired by my trip out to San Francisco this summer. SF just oozes with an energy and feel that makes you understand how the psychedelic rock movement originated and blossomed there. Anyone that has seen a show at The Fillmore can attest to that, that room’s just filled with the ghosts of the past. So with that in mind, I thought we’d take a trip back to the ’60s for some tunes from the some of the bands from that era…

We kick things off with a scintillating version of Combination Of The Two the first track off of Big Brother & The Holding Co.’s major label debut Cheap Thrills. From there, we’ve got the highly underrated Quicksilver Messenger Service with the six-plus minute instrumental Gold And Silver that features some fantastic acid drenched guitar work from John Cipollina.

Next up, we’ve got two of the more poppy efforts to come out of the scene. First, the band that should have broken big, but never lived up to the hype – Moby Grape with Omaha. Then we’ve got one from Sopwith Camel with the jazzy-folk-rocker Hello, Hello; which became the first Top 40 hit for any of the San Fran bands of the era. Finally, we close things out with two bands that came to define the city and the psychedelic rock movement – Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead. We’ve got a live version of The Airplane’s 3/5 Of A Mile In Ten Seconds and The Dead with their psychedelic rave up Cream Puff War off their debut album.

Friday’s Leftovers: Zappa Family Drama

Written by on 11.21.2008 | Leftovers, Radiohead, Zappa

As you may have read, the Zappa Family trust – headed by Gail and Dweezil Zappa – have waged war on Zappa cover bands. Earlier this summer some major drama unfolded in Ottawa between Dweezil and Andre Cholmondeley of Project Object. Dweezil wrote about the incident a few months ago, but legendary Zappa alum Adrian Belew – who also employs Cholmondeley as a guitar tech – just explained his side of the story over at his blog.

We’d love to know more of the back story on this one. Anyone have any insight? Let’s take another look at what’s happening…

Finally, tour dates have been trickling out of Radiohead Central and Pitchfork rounds up the info. For now there haven’t been any U.S. dates announced but perhaps they’ll swing by on the way to Mexico City.

The B List: 10 Fantastic Song Pairings

Welcome to the 100th edition of The B List. To celebrate this special anniversary, I’m going to finally finish a list I started writing way back in December 2006. Ah, the good old Hidden Track glory days…

Peanut butter and jelly; mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce and crust; bong hits and porn – certain combinations are magical proving that the whole can be greater than the sum of two parts. That’s true in music as well. For this week’s B List, we’re going to list ten song pairings that work great together.

10. Sailin’ Shoes > Hey Julia > Sneakin’ SallyRobert Palmer

It’s not too often that a musician covers another artist’s song so well that the original artist starts covering the style of the cover in concert. Just this year Little Feat has started playing Sailin’ Shoes with the funky feel of Robert Palmer’s version. For his debut album and in concert, Palmer segue Sailin’ Shoes into his own Hey Julia before dropping the hammer with Sneakin’ Sally. Check out this live version from Wesleyan University circa 1976…

Bloggy Goodness: Elvis Has Left The Building

Next month, the Sundance Channel will debut a new 13 episode talk and live performance show hosted by Attractions/Imposters front man Elvis Costello. The hour long show called Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… will feature “the best elements of talk and music television, inviting viewers to enjoy an in-depth conversation between host and his guests, punctuated by musical performances by Costello, his guests and a wide variety of musicians.”

Photobucket

The series debuts on December 3 at 9 PM when Elvis will be joined by Sir Elton John. Upcoming episodes feature an impressive array of acts including The Police, Lou Reed, She & Him, Jenny Lewis, Norah Jones and President Bill Clinton. We got our DVRs set already!

Finally, just when you thought that The Beatles vault had been totally exhausted there comes news of a new 14 minute plus “lost” song called Carnival Of Light that Sir Paul McCartney is trying to get released. McCartney had previously tried to get the track released for the The Beatles’ Anthology, but was vetoed by the other band members and representatives for John Lennon. We hope we get to hear this soon.

WSP @ Irving Plaza – Havin’ A Bad Time

Written by on 11.20.2008 | Reviews, Widespread Panic

Let me start off my recap of Widespread Panic’s intimate benefit concert at Irving Plaza last night by saying the band was firing on all cylinders and sounded great. But as good as they were, I had the worst concert experience I’ve ever had in my life. The venue was packed so far beyond capacity that the ceiling started falling down. It’s a miracle no one got hurt.

As we waited in line to enter the concert, which was a benefit for the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation, I knew we were in trouble when members of the venue’s staff started selling entry to the show for $100 cash. The gig was way oversold already, but I guess when there’s a dollar to be made Live Nation and the foundation intended to make it.

Bill’s sons Alex and David kicked things off at 8PM with a speech about the history and goals of the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation. After about twenty minutes Widespread Panic took the stage to massive cheers from the crowd. I found what I thought was a nice space in front of the soundboard, but within minutes of the Heroes opener the floor was “buns to franks.” The Panic boys were feeling it from the first minute and I did my best to put the logistical shitshow out of my mind to focus on the music.

Pick The Bonus Material for UM’s Mantis

Written by on 11.20.2008 | Umphrey's McGee

For the past two years, Umphrey’s McGee has been hard at work on an album of material that hasn’t been played live called Mantis. The band is proud of what they’ve come up and wanted to come up with an innovative way to promote the album. Knowing that the majority of folks who will pre-order Mantis are loyal fans, Umphrey’s decided to unlock their vault to give those fans who support the album long-requested gems.

If you head over to the Mantis site, you’ll see a progress bar with nine different levels of bonus material. As of now, seven of the levels are unlocked and two levels are still locked. The more fans that pre-order the release, the more bonus content the band will unlock for everyone. There are nine total levels of material that could be unlocked containing over 45 unique & unreleased audio tracks, including behind-the-scenes perspectives, videos and plenty of quirky surprises. The Bonus Material is available EXCLUSIVELY to those who pre-order.

Now, here’s where you come in. The band wants to know what material the fans want to see included as bonuses for the new album, which hits stores on January 20. Do you want to hear the Much Obliged > The Girl is Mine > Jane Says > The Girl is Mine > “Jimmy Stewart” > Miss Tinkle’s Overture > Anchor Drops > Miss Tinkle’s Overture from a recording of a gig on September 23, 2005 that has never seen the light of day? How about an instrumental version of Bridgeless that was scrapped during a recording session? Perhaps you’re most interested in hearing some of those rare tracks from Jake and Brendan or Joel’s annual Christmas shows.

Here’s your chance to be heard. Simply, leave a comment below with the material you’d like to see included and Umphrey’s Sound Caresser Kevin Browning will look over the list and promises to include at least a few of your suggestions in one of the yet-to-be-unlocked levels of bonus material. Spread the word, tell your friends. The chances of seeing this material get better and better with every pre-order.

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Don’t Let Me Down

Written by on 11.19.2008 | Pullin' Tubes, The Beatles

Saturday marks the 40th Anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ White Album, so I thought I’d grouse around YouTube looking for a cool clip for today’s Pullin’ ‘Tubes. Yet, I got sidetracked and instead came across a incredibly fascinating video of the recording of Don’t Let Me Down.

When The Beatles headed into Twickenham Studios in 1969 to record what would wind up being Let It Be they brought a film crew with them to record a documentary about the making of the LP. The resulting film, Let It Be, shows the turbulent struggles that led to the band breaking up. For instance, it must’ve been so annoying to have Yoko sitting around adding nothing. Some of the outtakes from the sessions circulate including this montage…

Bust Outs: Tribute To The Phish

Let’s face it, every single person in this “room” has air guitared a Trey solo or attempted to play their own vacuum like Fishman at some point along the way. But not too many people out there ever get the opportunity to take a real live stab at covering ‘em. So today, we’ll take a look at some nods to the popular rock band as we highlight some truly stellar Phish covers.

Listening to bands cover Phish is entertaining, because generally speaking, you can really sense a sincerity by all of the band members to a) get it right and b) nail it. Plus, you know what they say: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

Benevento/Russo Duo: YEM -> Mike’s Song -> Freedom of Choice -> Mike’s Song 12/27/05

Duo Phish

Considering Marco Benevento closed out this Duo show with Mike Gordon by saying it’s the best they have ever played, it’s pretty clear that this one is special. The highlight of this phenomenal run has to be Marco’s ambient improvisation in the early segment of You Enjoy Myself and the subsequent interplay with Mike on the big build up, but just listening to Marco cover both the duties of Page and Trey with his arsenal of effects is jaw-dropping. If for some terrible reason you don’t already have this entire show, go get it, son.

Downloads: WSP @ Irving Plaza ’95

Written by on 11.18.2008 | Downloads

As we prepare for tomorrow night’s Widespread Panic show at Irving Plaza, we wanted to take a look back at the band’s last “real” performances at the venue from April of 1995. Here’s Neddy via Of The Week

Widespread Panic is playing (formerly) Irving Plaza this week for a Bill Graham Memorial Fund benefit. While they did an album release show there in 2006, I consider this to be their true return to a venue they totally blew the roof off of back in 1995.

04/07/95 Irving Plaza, New York, NY

1: Stop-Go > Heroes, Little Kin, Machine > Sleeping Man > Better Off, Let’s Get Down To Business, Pilgrims > Rock, Ain’t Life Grand

2: Postcard > Proving Ground > Blackout Blues, Pusherman, Impossible, Diner > Papa’s Home > Drums > Papa’s Home, Love Tractor

E: Porch Song, Can’t Find My Way Home > Mr. Soul

[Slow 'Porch Song'; Last 'Pusherman' - 05/29/92, 414 shows] <via Everyday Companion>

I made the trek down from Boston for my first Panic road trip outside of New England and it was well worth it. After basically being dared to relearn it on the Spreadnet, the band brought back Curtis Mayfield’s Pusherman after a 3 year shelving the first night amongst other spring-95-esque goodies. This paved way for a monster 2nd night.

04/08/95 Irving Plaza, New York, NY

1: Disco > Walkin’ (For Your Love), Makes Sense To Me > C. Brown, Airplane > Henry Parsons Died, It Ain’t No Use > 1 x 1, Conrad

2: Junior > Driving Song > Tie Your Shoes > Driving Song > Can’t Get High, Raise The Roof, Space Wrangler > Hatfield, Radio Child > Chilly Water > Jack > Chilly Water

E: West Virginia > Pickin’ Up The Pieces > Red Beans <via Everyday Companion>

The second set was a sandwich of sandwiches (like those cheeseburgers with 2 grilled cheese sandwiches as buns) — the first being a killer Driving>Tie Your Shoes>Driving and the bottom being a set closing monstah Chilly>Jack>Chilly. This was the first time they’d ever done that one and the moment when I realized they were going back into Chilly out of a scintillating Jack has to go down as a top ten how-low-can-my-jaw-drop moment in my WSP-going career. Without further ado, here are the sets:

Cover Wars: Young Lust Edition

After a few past Cover Wars appearances, the Ryan Montbleau Band can now claim a victory after scoring the majority of votes from last week’s edition when we looked at ten covers of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy. I wouldn’t be a responsible writer if I didn’t point out that Donny Hathaway also deserves much credit as Montbleau’s cover is part Lennon part Hathaway.

The Wall

This week we’re taking a look at seven covers of Pink Floyd’s Young Lust off of their 1979 epic The Wall. In the ongoing story of The Wall, this tune depicts a part of every rock star’s career that just doesn’t get enough songs written about it. I am talking about banging groupies in hotel rooms.

Briefly: Renovated Beacon Opening Soon

Written by on 11.18.2008 | Beacon Theatre

Some Dude just shot me over an e-mail with the first announcement we’ve seen for a concert at the newly renovated Beacon Theatre. 3 Girls and Their Buddy (Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin and Buddy Miller) goes down on February 20, while legendary guitarists Buddy Guy and B.B. King return to the Beacon on February 21. No word yet on dates for the Allman Brothers Band 40th Anniversary run in March, but perhaps Gregg will spill the beans at the Billboard Touring Conference on Thursday.

Review: Rose Hill Drive @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Written by on 11.18.2008 | Reviews, Rose Hill Drive

With a driving backbeat, rapid fire and precise guitar and thunderous bass, Boulder’s Rose Hill Drive stormed the stage at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta on Friday, the seventh of November. This three-piece power trio knows how to rock and they rock hard. This up and coming group showed they have the guts and cojones to unabashedly electrify much larger arenas, and if this showing was in any way indicative of the powers of which they are capable, they will be playing to much larger crowds nationally soon.

Hailing from Boulder, CO, Rose Hill Drive is somewhat of a throw back to ’70s era hard rock. Blistering guitar solos and tight group playing are their hallmarks and their strong suite. Touring on the strength of their recent release, Moon Is the New Earth, the band knows they have what it takes to make it in the cut throat rock and roll industry.

With a no-frills stage set-up, it was obvious there would be no sideshow, no deflection. The music and the music alone was the appetizer, entree and dessert. Their set was composed of originals from their recent and previous releases, as well as a few covers of classics like Who Knows by Hendrix and the Zeppelin rough and tumble crunch rocker Communication Breakdown. Very little artist and audience dialogue added to the mystique of the band. The show was workman-like in its delivery and production.

Tour Dates: Ben’s Relentless New Band

Last week, soulful guitar slinger Ben Harper sneakily revealed his new band by launching a website for the project called the Relentless Seven. The bare bones website features just the band member’s names, a handful of tour dates along with three streaming songs for your listening pleasure. The tracks on the site include covers of Prince’s Purple Rain and Led Zeppelin’s Good Times, Bad Times and a blistering ten minute plus original: Serve Your Soul.

The Relentless Seven will hit the road for a five date California tour, with a promise on their site of more dates to come in 2009.

If you’re not fortunate enough to live out in Cali to catch Ben’s new band, than maybe you can make it out to one of these recently announced tours…

Finally, Yonder Mountain String Band will be hitting the road this coming February for another installment of their now annual Cabin Fever Tour. The bluegrass revivalists will focus their 21 date run on cities across the Southern part of the country with five shows spread throughout Florida. Those who order tickets from the band’s exclusive pre-sale will receive one free live Yonder song download that’s redeemable via the band’s llive download site. Act now as the pre-sale ends this coming Saturday.
