Friday Mix Tape: Live From The ’80s

Written by on 03.27.2009 | Friday Mix Tape

It’s time to get your Frankie Says Relax t-shirts out of the closet as we celebrate the ’80s this week for Friday Mix Tape. If you’ve come to know me at all in the last three years, you know that I’m more of a live music guy than studio so each track in the mix was recorded live. We’ve got six songs from a wide variety of artists and all of ‘em are from primo sources.

We start with one of the most catchy tunes of all time – Joe Jackson’s Steppin’ Out live from December 9, 1982 at the Orpheum Theater in Boston. Next, we turn to Bruce Hornsby and The Range for a live version of the guitar-driven Western Skyline from September 2, 1986 at NYC’s The Bottom Line and David Gilmour for a tasty solo band take on Comfortably Numb from July 12, 1984 at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena. From there, we turn to the Jerry Garcia Band for a memorable Think from 1989 before Frank Zappa hits us with Heavy Duty Judy. R.E.M. closes things out with an early Can’t Get Here From There from a 1985 Rockpalast broadcast.

Friday for the Foodies: Inside Katz’s

Written by on 03.27.2009 | Food

Happy Friday everyone!  I thought I’d kick the weekend off with a great video that I found on Always Hungry’s Twitter Feed that takes us inside the world of a “Cutter” at Katz’s Deli on NYC’s Lower East Side.  Also lots of news tidbits I came across.  If you are heading to the Bacon Throwdown on Sunday, check out Theodore Peck, one of the contestants who has won 4 straight competitions and is going for his 5th this weekend.

  • AlwaysHungry “I’ll have what she’s having.” Take an inside look at the famous Katz’s Deli. http://bit.ly/CZiYa (Via Twitter) Great video interview with Eddie who is a cutter at Katz’s.  He knows his meat & he knows his customers!

  • Food2 is a new blog/site that scours the planet as well as local fast food drive-ins for the tastiest, seductive, most shocking and satisfying bites in the world of food and drink. (Their description not mine!)

  • Great new website for those of us on a budget who still want to indulge our foodie cravings 3 Buck Bites.
  • Wazoki – Like a Seamless Web for booze, Wakozi connects you to wine shops, liquor stores and bodegas (for beer) in your neighborhood. (Via Tasting Table)

ABB @ The Beacon: Celebrating 40 Years

Written by on 03.27.2009 | Allmans

The Allman Brothers Band celebrated their 40th Anniversary last night by playing their first two albums in their entirety on the 13th show of their 15 show run at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. When set one started off with Don’t Want You No More, Jeff texted me that he thought the band would run through their self-titled debut album and he was right. For the second set, the Brothers tackled the songs from 1970′s Idlewild South.

With each passing night the members of this band have gotten tighter and tighter especially without any guests on stage. In a pre-Beacon interview drummer Butch Trucks mentioned that this show would just be the Allman Brothers Band leading Peacheaters to speculate that Dickey Betts would sit-in, but that never came to pass. And it was just as well as the ensemble tore through everything they played unencumbered by any guests.

Butch, Gregg and Jaimoe – who was playing with more passion tonight than I’ve seen the whole run – seemed to be all smiles on the Moogis webcast forty years after first playing together. The Allman Brothers Band returns to the stage tonight for the penultimate show of the run with all signs pointing to Warren’s The Dead bandmates Phil Lesh and Bob Weir joining the band on Saturday. Tune in to Moogis to follow the action live.

Set 1: Don’t Want You No More, It’s Not My Cross to Bear, Black Hearted Woman, Trouble No More, Every Hungry Woman, Dreams, Whipping Post

Set 2: Revival, Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’, Midnight Rider, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Hoochie Coochie Man, Please Call Home, Leave My Blues at Home

Encore: Statesboro Blues

Jeff Tweedy’s solo tour brought him to Burlington’s Higher Ground last night and he took the opportunity to show some love for Phish. During Heavy Metal Drummer, the Wilco frontman sang “playing Phish covers beautiful and stoned.” Epic! Tweedy’s tour continues tonight at the Calvin.

Bloggy Goodness: Free NINJA EP

In anticipation of this summer’s Jane’s Addiction and Nine Inch Nails joint amphitheater tour, the two powerhouse alternative rock acts have launched a brand new website to get their fans ready for action. The sightly sparse site, which includes links to all the band’s social networking sub-sites, also features a free six song EP that contains the studio debut of two Jane’s tracks that Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor produced – Whores and Chip Away – both of which originally appeared on their 1987 self-titled live album.

Finally, we don’t often talk about movie trailers around these parts, but there have been two very cool ones that have surfaced over the last couple of days that we wanted to share. The first is for the highly anticipated, Spike Jonze directed adaptation of the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are – which features the music of Arcade Fire and is set to have a soundtrack from YYY’s frontwoman Karen O. The second, is for Ang Lee’s adaptation of Elliot Tibor’s memoir Taking Woodstock – which tells the behind the scenes story of how the festival ended up at Yasgur’s Farm.

Mile High and Forecastle Festival Lineups

Written by on 03.26.2009 | Festivals

As we mentioned earlier this month, March comes in like a lion and goes out with a slew of festival announcements. Today, the lineup for two festivals – Denver’s Mile High Festival and Louisville’s Forecastle Festival – have been announced with jam rockers Widespread Panic atop both lists.

The eighth annual Forecastle Festival takes place on July 10 – 12 at Riverfront Belvedere in Lousville, KY. So far, the lineup includes Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes and The Avett Brothers with over 65 acts to be announced in the coming months. Tickets are available now for $40 per day or $100 for the whole weekend.

The Mile High Music Festival returns for year number two on July 18 & 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. Widespread Panic passes up their annual Red Rocks run to headline both nights of this festival. Joining Panic will be the aggressive sounds of Tool, Denver-based The Fray, Ben Harper & Relentless 7 and many other acts. Single day passes for the Mile High fest run $90 and two-day passes are set at $162.50.

MP3 Boot Camp: Runnin’ With The Chicken

Written by on 03.26.2009 | Felice Brothers, MP3 Boot Camp

When I caught The Felice Brothers at Maxwell’s in Hoboken last September a tune called Run Chicken Run immediately caught my ear. The Felice boys mixed tempos really well throughout their concert and this fast-paced rocker with heart got the packed crowd moving. Wisely, the Catskill-based group are giving away an MP3 of Run Chicken Run from their forthcoming Team Love album, Yonder Is The Clock, which is due in stores on April 7.

Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Elvis Heads Out On Tour

Written by on 03.25.2009 | Elvis Perkins, Pullin' Tubes

A little over a year ago, I introduced you to the musical stylings and the rather sad story of Elvis Perkins – whose somber debut Ash Wednesday was one of my Top Ten of ’07. The singer-songwriter, who has been touring with his band In Dearland, recently put out their sophomore self-titled effort – Elvis Perkins in Dearland – which sounds more indicative of what they do live, lots of upbeat folkie numbers littered with banjos, muted horns, harmonica, bass drums, quirky rhythms and Perkins thought-provoking lyrics.

Elvis Perkins In Dearland recently kicked off a world tour last week at SXSW which finds them stopping by a sold out Bowery Ballroom tonight, before heading across the pond for handful of dates and then returning to the States for the official North American leg. The band recently recorded a live version of their single Shampoo for the Gold Room Sessions, check it out…

E-Mail of the Week: Slightly Stupid Booking

Our pal McGriddle passed along this gem from his Inbox…

Autism Tree Project Benefit Update

The Belly Up offers their sincerest apologies for any misunderstanding about the April 15th charitable fundraiser for Autistic Children email. The band that is playing for this charitable event is called Slightly Stoopid, spelled with two oo’s. It was never our intent nor the intent of Autism Tree Project to suggest that the name of the event is called Slightly Stoopid.

We apologize to anyone who may have misunderstood our previous email, however, we are proud to be a part of this event and grateful to the band for their community contribution as this event will raise thousands of dollars for the charity. We encourage anyone who cannot attend to donate to the cause by visiting www.autismtreeproject.org.

Sincerely,
The Belly Up Staff

Might as well give each attendee a copy of Green Day’s last album.
