Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Beasties Got What You Want

Written by on 05.27.2009 | Beastie Boys, Pullin' Tubes

If you’re name happens be Ad-Rock, MCA or Mike D – 2009 is shaping up to be quite the year. The trio otherwise known as the Beastie Boys have already reissued two of their classic albums – Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head – with Ill Communication to receive similar treatment later this summer. The trio will also be hitting the festival circuit hard this summer with appearances at Bonnaroo (holding down the pre-Phish slot on Friday night), Outside Lands, All Points West and Lollapalooza. Oh, and they also happen to have a new album on the way too, which is due later this year and will be called Hot Sauce Committee – yup that is evidently the real title.

On Monday night the trio stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to promote their latest reissue and to perform the classic album track So What’cha Want with The Roots providing live backing and absolutely nailing the songs samples, check it out…

Written by on 05.27.2009 | Steely Dan, Tour Dates

A few weeks back we told you about Steely Dan’s upcoming Rent Party tour, which will include multi-night stands of special setlist shows in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Chicago but we didn’t have the actual tour dates… until now. For each multi-night run, Steely Dan will play Aja in its entirety along with a number of other Dan classics at the first show, Gaucho plus more at the second show, The Royal Scam plus more at the third show while the setlist of the final show will be selected by the fans via the interwebs.

The Boston run will only be three shows, so they won’t cover The Royal Scam at the Wang Theatre. Tickets for most of the shows go onsale May 30 via a special AmEx pre-order with the general onsales following on June 6. Multi-night ticket packs will be available as well. VIP packages will be available through iloveallaccess.com. Intermezzo: From Jam_ON > DMB Channel

Written by on 05.27.2009 | Billy Joel, Dave Matthews, Intermezzo

From Noon on Monday June 1 until Monday June 8 at 3AM Sirius/XM’s Jam_ON channel will turn into Dave Matthews Band Radio. To celebrate the release of DMB’s new album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, Sirius channel 17 and XM channel 56 will be entirely devoted to the band for the eight day period. The playlist for Dave Matthews Band Radio will span their entire career including everything from the band’s early days to live recordings from the band’s archives to every song from Big Whiskey and more.

You can still hear Jam_ON online on SIRIUS Internet Radio channel 10.

As always, we got a batch of links to help you get over the hump…

Finally, everyone I’ve talked to that subscribed to Moogis for their series of fifteen Allman Brothers Band webcasts direct from the Beacon Theatre raved about the service. Moogis founder and ABB drummer Butch Trucks spoke with Artisan News Service about the future of Moogis…

What I plan to do with Moogis is to wire up about five of the top Jam Band clubs around the country and we’ll be doing this over the next year or so and get Moogis to where it’s up and running every day. Every night you’ll be able to see new live concerts from one of those five or six clubs from one of the younger bands that are around. And maybe a couple of times per month we’ll take a mobile unit out and do a larger venue with The Allman Brothers or Dave Matthews or Phish or The Dead, you know the bigger bands.

If anyone could pull off a high quality webcast of a Phish show, it’s Moogis.

Cover Wars: Tomorrow Never Knows Edition

There is certainly plenty to read up about in regards to this week’s selection, The Beatles’ Tomorrow Never Knows. From the origin of the title to the revolutionary vocal recording techniques to the LSD inspired lyrics, the whole thing is quite interesting. Also of note is that while it is the closing track on the album, TNK was the first song recorded for Revolver.

Cover Wars

My favorite quote regarding the recording comes from legendary engineer Geoff Emerick. Sometimes I forget just how much The Beatles revolutionized the recording process as we know it…

It meant actually breaking into the circuitry. I remember the surprise on our faces when the voice came out of the speaker. It was just one of sheer amazement. After that they wanted everything shoved through the Leslie: pianos, guitars, drums, vocals, you name it!

Checking on last week, Grace Potter finished in first and Built To Spill came in second with another big chunk of votes in the Cortez The Killer Cover Wars. Checking in on two week’s ago, moe. and Umphrey’s are still battling it out over Can’t You Hear Me Knocking without a clear winner.

801: Technically, 801 titled this track TNK when they first released it in 1976. The lineup for 801 is: Phil Manzanera (guitar), Brian Eno (keyboards), Bill MacCormick (bass), Simon Phillips (drums), Francis Monkman (keyboards), Lloyd Watson (slide guitar). This shit is bad-ass. Source: 801 Live

Briefly: Phish’s Time Turns Elastic on iTunes

Written by on 05.26.2009 | Phish

When a band releases their first single in nearly five years they usually tell their fans, but when does Phish do anything by the book? Last night a version of the Trey Anastasio-penned 13 minute suite Time Turns Elastic – recorded recently in New York City by the quartet for their new album produced by Steve Lilywhite – was put up for sale on iTunes, but the only way you’d know is if you happened to be searching the iTunes store for Phish or you caught wind of the release on a message board.

Have you downloaded the track? Let us know what you think…

UPDATE (11:19AM): Phish.com has been updated with the video above and a news item about this new single that includes word that the as-of-yet-untitled new album will drop on July 28th.

You Can’t Stump The E Street Band

Written by on 05.26.2009 | Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concluded the first leg of their latest World Tour at the Izod Center in East Rutherford on Saturday and from the widespread rave reviews each show has received it seems as if the band is firing on all cylinders. One of the more exciting elements Springsteen has added to most sets is the “Stump The Band” segments where The Boss takes requests from the crowd on new covers for the band to play.

Friday Mix Tape: Six Summer Songs

This weekend marks the moment we’ve been waiting for since we said goodbye to summer last year, as we officially say hello to Summer ’09 (or the Summer Of Jam as we’re calling it around these parts). With a nice long weekend ahead, we know you’re probably just counting down the minutes till you can go and enjoy it. With that in mind, this week’s mix tape is dedicated to the summer, literally with six tasty tunes with the word summer in the title, so sit back and relax and let’s get you in the right frame of mind…

We kick things off with singer-songwriter Josh Rouse ode to the warmer months Summertime from his Subtitulo album. Next up, we’ve got some sunny psychedelic music, first up is Animal Collective with Summer Clothes from what may be a lot of people’s album of the year Merriweather Post Pavilion (though I’m not convinced), and Yeasayer with the sitar infused Wait For Summer off of last year’s All Hour Cymbals. From there we’ve got the recently reformed Jane’s Addiction with Summertime Rolls from their 1988 classic Nothing’s Shocking. Then we’ve got It’s Summertime from The Flaming Lips mainstream breakthrough album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Finally, we close things out with The Boss’ ode to maybe my favorite part of the soaring temperatures to come – Girls In Their Summer Clothes – from his Magic album. Enjoy the weekend!

Tour Diary: U-Melt’s Zac Lasher (Part 3)

Written by on 05.22.2009 | Tour Diary, U-Melt

We’d like to welcome back U-Melt keyboard ace Zac Lasher for the third set of entries from the Tour Diary he kept for Hidden Track. For parts one and two, Zac wrote about U-Melt’s journey through America’s Heartland. Now, we bring you the final installment of Zac’s Hidden Track Tour Diary…

4/27 – On the road to Tulsa

The county gets really big out here. Being from the Northeast, I’m used to everything being really close together. Not here. Another day of driving hours and hours with absolutely nothing around for miles and miles and miles gives me time to reflect. I found out about the pretty serious electronic music scene in eastern Colorado… I gotta say, it’s pretty hip – we opened for an electronic act that rocked the house at the Fox in Boulder, and on Saturday in Denver we played next door to a big electronic music circus complete with fire-dancers, stilt-walkers and live-painters. It was all very Burning-Man.

I’m very into that kind of scene, so I definitely enjoyed it, but it did all make me wonder as to the place of Rock ’n Roll in today’s (and tomorrow’s) world. It seems to me that electronica is a new kind of folk music. It doesn’t really require musical training, and it doesn’t require hours of rehearsal with a band. You just need a laptop, some key software and the inspiration and tenacity to learn how to use it, and you can get a crowd into a frenzy playing your produced tracks.
