B List: Five More Unanswered Questions

Last month we kicked off a new recurring B List topic where we posed five questions for which we’d love to know the answers. We got a number of great responses from our readers and even a couple of great unanswered questions submissions, so we’re back with another batch of unanswered questions including a couple from our readers.

In many cases, the answers may never be known or can only be answered by the people involved – who aren’t talking. Yet, for conversation’s sake we’re going to put these questions out there…

1. What’s up with the birthdate in Trey’s mugshot?

As we’ve noted earlier, today is Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio’s birthday. When Big Red was arrested on December 15, 2006 by Officer “I Saved Phish” Mija he posed for a mugshot with a piece of paper that listed his birth date as April 13, 1966. We always wondered why the Whitehall Police Department had Trey’s DOB wrong.

Bloggy Goodness: Brooklyn Bowl The App

We’ve already professed our love and admiration for Brooklyn Bowl when we named it as our favorite New York City music venue. The gastropub-bowling alley-concert venue is again proving that it’s one of the more forward thinking venues out there as they’ve just launched their very own iPhone App which will allow users to “check out what’s coming up at Brooklyn Bowl, buy tickets, email events to friends, share events on Facebook and Twitter, and even wave a virtual lighter at all your favorite shows.”

Photobucket

As an added bonus the venue is offering free entry to the Bowl if you are one of the first 50 people to show your Brooklyn Bowl iPhone app at the door – the offer ends tomorrow night, so download and head on over!

Finally, as the 2010 Major League Baseball regular season comes an end this weekend and baseball fans around the country begin to gear up for the playoffs, fans of the AL Central winning Minnesota Twins will have a new indie-rock fight song called Don’t Call Them The Twinkies to get them amped up as they try and make a run at a third World Series title. The tune was penned by Minneapolis native and hardcore Twins fan Craig Finn, by request, for The Baseball Project’s new album, which is due out next year. The Hold Steady front man’s ode name checks 8 Minnesota cities, 2 neighborhoods, 2 streets, and 9 Twins players. Give it a listen…

DJ and HT staffer Wyllys teams up with horn players Peter Apfelbaum, Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman – aka The New York Hustler Ensemble – on December 30th for a Post Phish Dance Party at Sullivan Hall in New York City. Apfelbaum, Hartswick and Cressman have all spent time in Trey Anastasio’s solo band and their work with Wyllys should be quite a departure from what they’ve done in the past. Tickets are available now through TicketWeb for the debut of what’s sure to be a fascinating project.

Last Week’s Sauce: September 20th – 26th

It’s a mostly Rock and Roll edition of Last Week’s Sauce today. Luckily we have the funky Stanton Moore Trio to break things up for us and we lead off with an absolutely amazing cover recently added to Built To Spill’s repertoire. Umphrey’s McGee and Wilco both do what they do best to round us out and that is what you get for your hour’s worth of music.

Of course, you can download all of this week’s audio in one easy to listen to MP3 that we call the Last Week’s Sauce Podcast, click here to download.

[Thanks to Kush for this week's photo]

Built To Spill – The Plan, Ripple
Date & Venue: 2010-09-19 The Beaumont – Kansas City, MO
Taper & Show Download: TEAM KANSASOURI

“The New Grateful Dead” has been tossed about in the past describing Built To Spill, it’s a comparison that a lot of Deadheads completely don’t understand – but I think it has some merit once you get past the obvious differences in overall sound. Well this tour, which is massive by the way with very few days off, they have been playing Ripple. The cover starts off slow and somewhat true to the original, but by the end it is a full-on rocker. I hope you don’t mind, but since Built To Spill tends to take a lot of time between songs, I have removed a big chunk of dead space between these two tunes. BTS [tour dates] plays the first of two shows at The Paradise in Boston tonight. I’ll see ‘ya there tomorrow.

Glide Feature: Ryan Montbleau Interview

Written by on 09.30.2010 | Glide, The Ryan Montbleau Band

Last week, HT faves the Ryan Montbleau Band put out Heavy On The Vine – the group’s Martin Sexton-produced fourth studio album. Glide’s Shane Handler spoke with singer/songwriter Ryan Montbleau not only about the album but about the band’s recent tour with Sexton, his resilient nature and what it’s like enter Dave Matthews’ world.

Here’s an excerpt from Shane’s interview with Ryan Montbleau…

Has the acoustic guitar ever provided you any limitations in terms of storytelling or  songwriting and what themes or occurrences provide you the most inspiration  to pen new songs?

I don’t really play much else besides guitar, so it’s a blessing to have that by my side to make music.  And having the guys in the band to fall back on is also a blessing.  One song on the new record “Fix Your Wings.” I just had written completely a capella, the whole song start to finish.  It was never my intention to keep it that way, I just needed the guys to flesh it out.  As far as writing  tunes, it’s maybe about 50/50 for me: half start out on the guitar with  some little riff or some chords that I like and then I immediately hear  a melody for it, and half come when I’m away from the guitar,  just singing in my head.  A song can be about anything at all, you just have to be present enough to see and hear the inspiration whenever  it comes.  And then you have to really get to work.

CLICK HERE for the read the complete article. The Ryan Montbleau Band is currently touring the Midwest. You can catch them tonight in Newport, KY; tomorrow in Ann Arbor, MI and at Schuba’s in Chicago on Saturday.

Video: Wilco – The Deli Tray Incident

Written by on 09.30.2010 | Videos, Wilco

One of the most infamous shows in Wilco history took place on February 15, 1997 at Irving Plaza in New York City. The performance was being filmed for HBO’s long-dormant Reverb program and after taking the stage for the second encore, the band threw a deli tray into the audience and told fans it was fair game to throw the deli meats back at the band. Check it out…

God Street Wednesdays: Lo & Aaron Acoustic

Written by on 09.29.2010 | God Street Wine

We love when a private show becomes open to the public and that’s the case for Alexandra Rosenstein’s 33rd Birthday Party at Sullivan Hall on October 8th. Why is this of interest to Winos? Well, God Street Wine guitarists Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell will play a set that night as part of the festivities. Jaik Miller and HT faves Leroy Justice are also on the bill.

To gain entry to the show simply RSVP on the Facebook Page for the event. The pair last teamed up together for a “duo” set at Mexicali back in May ’09 and performed a slew of GSW classics before sitting in with headliner Echofission for a few tunes. While there’s no cover for entry to Sullivan Hall on the 8th there will be a collection area for donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at the venue. See you there!

Dead Confederate Welcomes Many Guests @ Music Hall of Williamsburg Show

Written by on 09.29.2010 | Dead Confederate, Reviews

Our friend Will McCranie caught a very special Dead Confederate show last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and has filed this report…

Menacing as ever and wasting no time to dive into a set that raised the hairs on the back of your neck from note one last night, it was obvious that Dead Confederate are on the rise and out to take no prisoners.

The Tuesday night crowd at Music Hall of Williamsburg got what they paid for and then some. The Athens-based quintet ripped through a set of tunes balanced between their brand new album Sugar and their debut LP, Wrecking Ball. They’ve built a well deserved reputation as putting on one of the best live shows of any band on the touring circuit, but they outdid themselves for this Brooklyn gathering.

About five songs in we were greeted with “You’re joining us on a journey of shit and we don’t know how it’s gonna happen”, from lead vocalist Hardy Morris, leading into a Sugar-heavy segment of what could’ve been an impromptu benefit show considering the laundry list of guests to follow.

Sugar collaborator Ben Wigard kicked things off with a full horn section in tow – 10 people on stage…wow – on Run From The Gun. Wigard was quickly followed by two members of Alberta Cross joining on Giving It All Away and none other than DJ Logic on Mob Scene and By Design, further proving this is not a band to be pigeonholed. As if things couldn’t get any better, Georgia luminary Kevn Kinney was invited out for a monstrous encore of Rockin’ In the Free World > This Land Is Your Land (jam) > Rockin’ In the Free World with DJ Logic returning to the stage to round out the festivities.

Word to the wise: Dead Confederate is a band not to be missed.

1 Set: Smoking A Minor, All The Angels, Heavy Petting, The Rat>Quiet Kid, Run From The Gun#, Giving It All Away@, Mob Scene^, By Design^, Start Me Laughing, Tortured-Artist Saint

Encore: Rocking In The Free World^&>This Land Is Your Land(jam)^&>Rocking In The Free World^&

Briefly: No Widespread Panic in 2012?

Written by on 09.29.2010 | Widespread Panic

You wouldn’t think major news about a band’s future would break in a college paper, but that’s exactly what happened today as Vanderbilt’s student paper printed a Q & A with Widespread Panic keyboardist JoJo Hermann that included a discussion of the jam titan’s future…

VH: Are you at all surprised at the longevity of your success as a group?
JH: Well, next year will be our 25th anniversary. After that, we’re probably going to call it (quits) for awhile. So we’re looking forward to next year and going out on a high note.

Just a few years after their last hiatus ended in 2005, it appears Widespread Panic is planning on taking another open-ended break in 2012. Bad news for Spreadheads everywhere. [via Jambands.com]

Tour Dates: Get Ben’t

Written by on 09.29.2010 | ben kweller, DJ Shadow, Tour Dates

When we last checked in with Ben Kweller, the singer-songwriter had recently released his fourth studio album, the country-tinged Changing Horses. The ATO recording artist, whose next album – Go Fly A Kite – is said to be a return to his pop-rock sound, has lined up a late fall club tour that includes three New York City-area performances in his former longtime adopted hometown – with a gig at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ on November 17 and an early and late show at the recently opened Rock Shop in Brooklyn’s Park Slope on the 27th.

If you’re not into a night of Ben’s brand of indie-pop-rock then maybe you’ll be interested in hitting one of these recently announced tours…

Finally, while it’s been four years since DJ Shadow released his last studio album, Outsider, the influential turntablist has recently released a new digital 12″-single in advance of the his new album – which is due out next year.  The Bay Area-based DJ has recently announced that he will hit the road for an 18-date North American tour dubbed Live From The Shadowsphere that will kick off on October 25 at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC and includes a hometown at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on the 29.

HT Interview: Jeff Mattson

If you’ve been nose-to-grindstone in the music industry for decades, you hope to stay busy. And now, more than ever, it seems, Jeff Mattson’s cup runneth over.

Although long considered a musician’s musician with wicked guitar chops and a lived-in voice, and best known for the Zen Tricksters and a stint with Phil Lesh & Friends in the late 1990s, some of Mattson’s biggest breaks have come only in the past few years. First came a partnership with Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, with whom Mattson clicked instantly, going on to form what both musicians consider one of their most creative projects. And late last year, with John Kadlecik’s departure from Dark Star Orchestra imminent, Mattson stepped into the “Jerry” role in DSO so seamlessly that by the time he formally joined the band, in June 2010, it seemed just that: a formality. The role was his.

Hidden Track had a chance to visit with Mattson at his Long Island home a few weeks back, part of a rare break for the guitarist and singer between exhausting DSO tour legs. It was one of those conversations where 50 minutes flow by like five, with so much to touch upon, and Mattson was in a mood to expound.

HIDDEN TRACK: Watching you perform with DSO now, you’ve slipped into this role so easily. Obviously you’ve known these guys for a while but it’s a transition all the same. Going back, when did you first hook up with the DSO gang?

JEFF MATTSON: When did I first meet them?

HT: Right, you’ve known them for years and I can remember seeing the Zen Tricksters and DSO sharing bills some eight, nine years ago.

JM: Yeah, I think it was back about then, down south somewhere, where the Zen Tricksters opened for DSO. The first time we encountered each other there was, well, maybe a little gentle competition, but a good vibe between us, too. Then, in 2003, the Zen Tricksters went out as an acoustic trio, just Klyph (Black), Tommy (Circosta) and me, and did something like 10 shows opening for them. We got to know them better and there was mutual respect, and we both saw it as we’re on the same mission, instead of competing. And frankly, they’re a lot more successful than we ever were [laughs], and we weren’t much of a threat! But we had our niche.

Rush Ignored by Rock Hall, Again

Written by on 09.29.2010 | R&RHOF, Rush

The nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 were announced yesterday and once again the big story for us are the bands who didn’t make the cut. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you can’t argue with the impact both Rush and KISS have made on the genre. While those two acts have been left off, Chic, Donna Summer and LL Cool Fucking J are on the list of nominees. At least yesterday’s announcement wasn’t all bad – we’re happy to see Tom Waits, Alice Cooper and the Beastie Boys made it.

While Rock Hall chairman Jann Wenner and the rest of the museum’s board keep on ignoring Rush a few other publications are stepping in to give the band other accolades. Billboard Magazine will honor the Canadian prog-rock trio with this year’s Legend of Live award at the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards in New York City on Nov. 4.  Also, Classic Rock magazine announced that Rush will be honored with the Living Legend award in London on Nov. 10 at this year’s Marshall Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards.

  • 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees: Alice Cooper, Beastie Boys, Bon Jovi, Chic, Neil Diamond, Donovan, Dr. John, J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits, Chuck Willis

The director of the exceptional documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, Scott McFayden, wasn’t surprised at the latest snub as he told EW, “They’ve never been a critics’ band. The industry people that are involved with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rush has never been cool enough for them.” Rush’s time will come, we just hope it’s sooner rather than later as those three guys deserve to receive the accolade while they are still creating interesting music and selling out venues around the world.

Video: Quintus – Hours Is Ours

Written by on 09.29.2010 | Quintus, Videos

Reuben and David from Quintus stopped by the Big Ugly Yellow Couch, a domesticated Brooklyn blog that hosts acoustic sessions on their sofa and include quirky poetic writings about the performers. As longtime Quintus fans, it’s nice to hear stripped down versions of Quintus material, especially here on Hours Is Ours with its quality Uke jam…
