A Grateful Trip Into Elsas’ Archive

If you grew up as a rock fan in the New York City area then you’ve probably heard the voice of legendary DJ Dennis Elsas during his 25 year stint on WNEW or from his continuing work on both WFUV and XM/Sirius over the past few years. Elsas has seen and heard it all since he started his broadcasting career at Queens College in the mid-sixties and is sharing his personal collection of classic interviews, photos and bits of memorabilia from throughout his memorable 40-plus-year career at denniselsas.com.

Earlier this week, Dennis posted his thoughts and a clip of an interview he did with the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia in 1984 just before the band’s 20th Anniversary. Jerry sounds great throughout the clip which ran on PM Magazine back in the day. Besides checking out the clip, you gotta see a memo that Elsas shares written by another WNEW legendary jock Scott Muni outlining the station’s simulcast coverage of a Grateful Dead concert at the Felt Forum on December 5, 1971. This was the first live broadcast of a Dead show in the NYC area and we love Elsas for sharing this marvelous piece of memorabilia with us. There’s plenty more where that came from at his site.
