A Memory of Music: February 2011

In their time off from the Disco Biscuits, bassist Marc Brownstein and keyboardist Aron Magner have been exploring a different side of electronic music with Conspirator. Joined this tour by Chris Michetti and a rotating cast of drummers, the band crisscrossed the country giving love to the oft-neglected Northwest and West Coast markets. Down in Asbury Park, New Jersey they were joined by Break Science’s Adam Deitch, who was rushed down from the studio in Brooklyn due to a family emergency that sidelined Darren Shearer. The rest of the tour will continue with Mike Greenfield, a man whom Brownie reminds us has now played with Lotus, The Disco Biscuits and The New Deal over the past three months.

While the dream of additional God Street Wine shows may be over, Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell have been as busy as ever. This past month, lucky Winos caught the acoustic duo – with guests – open for Melvin Seals & JGB at Brooklyn Bowl and play to a captive audience after the Trey Anastasio Band at the Albany’s Palace Theatre. The Red Square event also featured Dana Monteith of Ominous Seapods playing songs from his truckstop love ballad-era solo endeavors.

New Jersey native Nicole Atkins celebrated a big month with the release of her latest album Mondo Amore and a sold out gig at the Bowery Ballroom. Nicole took to the road backed by the The Black Sea on a tour that included stops in Toronto, Seattle and a showcase with Conan O’Brien. As Nicole writes, “The taping went by in a blur. I was so proud of everyone in my band, they killed it! It was cool too that Conan remembered me from a few years ago. What a trip.”

And lastly we’d like to congratulate The Black Keys Patrick Carney on his engagement to girlfriend Emily Ward during the Saturday night before the Grammy Awards. The Black Keys continued the successful weekend as the moe.down alumni won statues for Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package for the album Brothers.

A special thanks to Steve Moyles, Benjamin Slayter, and Mike Wren for this month’s contributions. If you have a photo you would like to share with us for next month’s column, let us know at Hidden Track.
