AfterNews: Billy and Mickey Hit The Road

Both members of the Grateful Dead’s drum section, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, have put together stellar bands for separate tours this summer.

  • Billy takes to the road next week with a badass power trio featuring Max Creek’s Scott Murawski on guitar and Oteil Burbridge of the ABB on bass. The group, which is working on a debut album slated for release in the fall, thrilled the crowd at Pearl Street in Northampton back in March at their first public gig. You can expect Max Creek tunes, Dead songs and a slew of interesting covers. Kreutzmann, Murawski and Burbridge kick off a nine-show tour of the Northeast a week from today in Providence. We hope to catch ’em on Sunday June 1, when they play a Rocks Off Cruise around Manhattan.
  • Meanwhile, Mickey Hart put together a supergroup of a different sort featuring legendary bassist George Porter Jr., Steve Kimock on guitar, Jen Durkin on vocals, Walfredo “Who Put You Up To It?” Reyes on drums and talking drum master Sikiru for a 20 city tour this summer. I was pleasantly surprised by the raw power and danceability of this band’s set at Langerado back in March, so I can’t even imagine how they’ll sound with a buncha shows under their belts. The Mickey Hart Band kicks off their festival-heavy schedule on June 6 at the Harmony Festival.

  1. I am most particularly glad for Scott Murawski, who has more than paid his dues for this opportunity…and who will show many people why he’s a full cut above almost every guitarist in the “jam band” scene! I’m sorry I cannot make any of the trio’s shows.
