Allman Brothers Band @ the Beacon – Night Six: Fagen, Whitford, Leo and Chad

Who needs the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when you’ve got the Allman Brothers Band’s March Madness run at the Beacon? By the time tonight’s show was over, a member of Aerosmith, The Original Meters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers AND Steely Dan had all joined the band at one point setting up one of the best performances of the run.

The first set started innocently enough with a string of old favorites before the Allmans dusted off Who To Believe and Old Before My Time for the first time on the run. Later, Warren’s River’s Gonna Rise got its second play by the group. Our first guest of the night was Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, no stranger to the Beacon. Fagen led the Allman Brothers Band through debut versions of Bob Dylan’s Down Along The Cove and Shakedown Street – a song the Steely Dan front man has been covering often with the Levon Helm Band – by the Grateful Dead to end the set.

Set One: You Don’t Love Me, Midnight Rider, Who To Believe, Woman Across The River, Old Before My Time, River’s Gonna Rise, Kind Of Bird, Down Along The Cove (w/ Donald Fagen on piano, melodica and vocals), Shakedown Street (w/ Donald Fagen piano & vocals and Lincoln Schleifer on bass)

Set Two: Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Statesboro Blues, Desdemona, Born Under A Bad Sign (w/ Chad Smith – drums, Bobby Allende – persussion, Brad Whitford – guitar), The Same Thing (w/ Chad Smith – drums, Bobby Allende – percussion, Brad Whitford – guitar), No One To Run With > Drums> No One To Run With
Encore: Southbound (w/ Leo Nocentelli – guitar, Lincoln Schleifer – bass, Brad Whitford – guitar; No Derek Trucks)

Towards the middle of the second set guitar wiz Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and percussionist Bobby Allende came out for blues-laden takes on Born Under A Bad Sign and The Same Thing. Whitford held his own in duels with ABB guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Speaking of Trucks, his multiple climax solo – complete with Mountain Jam teasing – in the No One To Run With closer was a standout moment in a show filled with them.

As the clock neared Midnight, the Allmans weren’t done and welcomed back Whitford along with bassist Lincoln Schleifer, who also guested on Shakedown, out with Original Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli for a Southbound shredfest. The Allman Brothers Band returns to the Beacon and Moogis tomorrow.
