Allmans: Sorry Dickey, Gregg Said No

Either Gregg Allman is a really good liar or Dickey Betts won’t be a part of the Allman Brothers Band 40th Anniversary Run at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on March 8 – 21. The only living band member with the Allman last name told Ross Cat of BestofWNY.com that Betts isn’t welcome…

Ross CAT -The rumor mill is churning that artists like ERIC CLAPTON, ARETHA FRANKLIN and BOZ SCAGGS will join in the celebration of the ALLMAN BROTHERS music as well as honoring founding member your late great brother DUANE ALLMAN.

Is there any chance during the 40th anniversary tour that DICKEY BETTS will be welcomed back to perform with the band if even for just one night?

Gregg ALLMAN – There is no chance that DICKEY BETTS will ever be involved with anything to do with the ALLMAN BROTHERS Band; we’ve been down that road too many times and it just wouldn’t work.

Regardless of any animosity that Gregg may hold towards Dickey, how can he deny Betts’ critical role in the band’s history. For the past six months we’ve heard how this upcoming Beacon run would be a celebration of the band’s history, but they haven’t invited the only living original band member who isn’t in the group? Let’s hope Gregg’s jerking our chain.

Even though the odds of a Dickey Betts appearance have taken a nose dive, you gotta love the other Beacon gust rumors mentioned in the article including Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton and Boz Scaggs. Who do you think will sit in with the Allmans at the Beacon? Leave a comment with your guess…

  1. Clapton
    Aretha
    Boz
    (I believe those rumors)
    Susan Tedeschi
Jimmy Herring (maybe even a night of Trucks/Herring a la 2000…….)
    Johnny Winter
    Duane Trucks
    Col. Bruce
    Bernie Williams
    Phil Lesh
Bob Weir (maybe both at the same time)
    Peter Gammons
    Doyle Bramhall, II
    Ernest G. Anastasio, III (maybe)
Levon Helm (including on The Weight)
    Neil Young
Karl Denson (because his sit-in at the Christmas Jam this year on Dreams was sooooooo nasty)
    Dave Matthews
    Bruce Hornsby
    Devin Allman
John Paul Jones (Mtn. Jam->Dazed and Confused->Mtn. Jam 2008-12-12….sick)
    Ron Holloway
    Robert Randolph
Bob Dylan (dark horse, but both are so legendary…imagine them doing Down in the Flood a la DTB with Dylan on vocals…or Don’t Think Twice…)

Some of those are just people I’d like to see. You never know….

  2. i must say seems like southern pride. I do respect gregg and his dedication to sobriety, but this band is simply not the allman brothers. its gregg some drums and some other really top notch players.

  3. “Above The Law” is for newbs. Gregg is a “Hard To Kill” man. That’s why Kelly LeBrock should be on that list. Book it. ::makes angry Seagal face::

  4. All I know is that the biggest Seagal fan of the group is Derek Trucks. Look at the facts:

    1. They both play the guitar.

    2. They both have badass ponytails.

    3. They are both very soft spoken.

    4. And when either are rocking out on the guitar or judo chopping some evil SOBs they both show absolutely no emotion.

Conclusion: Derek Trucks has some weird connection to Steven Seagal that has gone unnoticed until this point in time. I dont have any hard proof but I think Kurt Russell has something to do with this.

  5. If Allman can’t forgive Betts he is shortsighted of all the times others had to bear with him over the years. He wasn’t no “angel” himself.

  6. Betts was fired not just for his substance abuse, but for his unreliability. You can only screw a bunch of guys so many times before they don’t want you around anymore.

I believe that it’s Warren Haynes, anyway, and not necessarily Gregg, who refuses to work with Dickey. The team of Haynes and Derek Trucks is amazing to watch. I don’t see how replacing one of them with Dickey or adding Dickey to the mix would add anything to the shows.
