An Audio History Of Phish & Dave Matthews Band’s Past Collaborations
Love both bands, love one & hate the other, tolerate one & swear by the other, regardless of your allegiances there’s no denying the long history that Phish and the Dave Matthews Band share. Clearly the band members enjoy playing together as displayed by Dave’s choice of words and delivery of this quote that my friend Chris and I have always been huge fans of…
“It’s always a massive honor to come and share the stage with Trey Anastasio”. – Dave Matthews, 2/28/2001.

The history between the two bands continues this weekend when DMB takes the stage for two shows at Fenway Park with Willie Nelson opening up both performances before Phish plays a Fenway show of their own on Sunday. Then, both bands head to the Big Apple early next week for Phish’s three shows at Jones Beach and DMB’s special intimate show at the Beacon Theatre on Monday celebrating the release of their new album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King.
With that in mind, we’re taking this opportunity to look back with a special audio history detailing the numerous collaborations there have been between the two bands over the years…

Is that every single one of them? No. Dave also joined Trey for a trip to Senegal as well as a Superjam performance in New Orleans back in 2005. Dave & Trey also played together at From the Big Apple to the Big Easy at Radio City Music Hall later in 2005 as well. Touring saxophonist of the Dave Matthews Band Jeff Coffin has also joined Phish once, during the second Bela Fleck & The Flecktones full-band sit in on 7/9/1997 (You Enjoy Myself > Ghost > Poor Heart). Tim Reynolds on the other hand, also currently touring with DMB, has yet to make it to a Phish stage – though Tim and Trey dueled many times throughout the Dave Matthews & Friends tours in 2003 and 2004.

Dave and Friends was one of the best shows I have ever been to. Two of my favorite bands (and artists) that have such a friendship is truly awesome.

It’s a shame that Trey was backstage all weekend at the 3 day DMB/PHISH Fenway 09 stint and Dave never bothered to ask him to come out and jam…He was probably afraid Trey would make his homosexual friend Tim Reynolds look like the second rate guitarist stuck in the 80’s that he is…Funny this “collaboration” collage starts with the showsDMb used to open for Phish at and at fenway DMB opened two nights in a row for them. This is coming from a die-hard Davehead from 95…first show was 1-30-95 but they have lost it…Roi is gone and they play the same songs every night. Phish made them look real bad at Fenway and continues to do so night after night.
