Audio: Phosphorescent – Song For Zula

Over his last two albums Matthew Houck, who is best known by his recording moniker Phosphorescent, has impressed a lot of folks around these parts. First with his collection of Willie Nelson deep-cut covers To Willie and then with its follow-up Here’s To Taking It Easy, a rollicking set of country-rock. After nearly a three-year wait Phosphorescent will release their much anticipated new studio effort, Muchacho, an album that was born out of a creative spurt caused by a harsh break-up and a week-long retreat to a beach hut in Tulum, Mexico, via Dead Oceans on March 19.

The trip seemed to a have a big impact on the sound of the record, which is being described as more inline with the sparse, psychedelic-folk sounds of his 2007 release Pride. Late last month Houck gave fans an advance taste of what’s to come by releasing the Song For Zula, the album’s dreamy, six-plus-minute lead single, which cribs some lines from the Johnny Cash classic Ring Of Fire. Give it a listen…
