Picture Show: Jim James Plays For Obama Campaign

Jim James (w/ Carl Broemel) @ Colonial Theatre, October 1

Half way through the rigidly intimate set, My Morning Jacket front man Jim James stopped to reflect on the reason he was playing in front of a room full of Barack Obama supporters. “I want to be a part of something forward moving,” said James to the packed Colonial Theatre in Keene, New Hampshire on Monday night.

The gig was staged as a backdrop to not only raise awareness to vote in the upcoming presidential awareness but garner support for Obama in a crucial swing state. The theater was packed with mostly college students and surrounded by opportunistic Obama campaign volunteers hoping to draw the students to the polls to vote in November.

Review and Photos: Bonnaroo 2012

For those whose religion is music, the church doors were open this past weekend as North America’s most hellacious music outing Bonnaroo scorched the famous farm grounds in Tennessee for its 11th consecutive year.

The Bonnaroo cliches: Flaming weather, too many sweaty bros., no shade, too much music – Bonnaroo said “suck it” to all of that this year.

When people think of Bonnaroo, they think of hot, hot heat. Face-melting, soul-crushing laser to the face heat. Yet this year was the breeziest Bonnaroo yet. Rhys Darby, playing the role of fictional festival director during one of the opening press conferences, joked he had brought down the weather from Alaska. The cool weather was a game changer.

The stages are usually filled with so much music, there’s almost always conflicts. So fans typically miss shows they really want to see. Festival coordinators seemed to have the schedule on lock down for the most part, not leaving fans with too many bad decisions to make.

B List: Kevin Fuller’s Best Photos and the Stories Behind Them

Written by on 03.01.2012 | Editor's Choice, Features, Photos, The B List

A few weeks back photojournalist Kevin Fuller reached out to us about contributing to HT. We’ve long been a fan of his work and jumped at the opportunity. To introduce Kevin and his work to our readers, we asked him to put together a piece about his best photos and the stories behind them.

Trey Anastasio, Phish, Bethel Woods, 5/28/2011

This show almost didn’t happen for me. It was the Phish Summer Tour 2011 opener at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, so there was already a lot of anxious energy on the way to the show. I had already been confirmed for a photo pass. Upon arrival, I walked up to will call, where Phish’s publicist said the pass would be. I went earlier than I should of but I wanted to take care of it right away. The lady behind the glass had no pass for me and looked at me as if my face was on fire. She had no idea what I was talking about. After a lot of calls and a lot of me standing around — and the show start getting closer and closer — I decided to talk to someone else.

I went to the other window and the guy told me to walk into the building. Low and behold upon entering a lady says, “Are you Kevin Fuller?” “Yes!” “I’ve been waiting for you for an hour.” “I’ve been waiting outside these doors for an hour.” This happened with about five minutes to go until Phish took the stage, but thankfully everything turned out alright and I was able to snap the photo you see above.
