Avett Brothers Release Party & Interview

On Tuesday, The Avett Brothers played a free show in Manhattan on Tuesday and friend of HT, Will McCranie, has a recap for us…

680t

In celebration of their Rick Rubin-produced Columbia debut, I and Love and You, The Avett Brothers chose the humblest of paths playing a free show to a hundred or so lucky fans at the bar under Envoy Art Gallery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. While the setlist for the evening naturally showcased some of their most mature work to date found on the new LP, the quartet played with the fire over finesse approach reminiscent of their beginnings.

Setlist: Laundry Room
, January Wedding
, Paranoia In Bb Major, Kick Drum Heart
, And It Spread
, Slight Figure of Speech
, Skin and Bone (new song)
, Pretty Girl from Annapolis
, 10,000 Words
, Perfect Space

It was a fitting throwback and a gracious thank you to their devoted fans: a promise of a new chapter, forever pushing forward while never forgetting their past. It was hot, cramped, few could see, and no one cared. The Avetts have long outgrown venues of this size, but The Big Apple couldn’t have offered a more “Perfect Space” to remind them of home.

How did the band get paired up with Rick Rubin, arguably the most sought-after record producer in North America, if not the world?

Scott: We always had the mentality as a band that if we kept doing what we were doing and were true to the music that good things would come. This feels rehearsed but it’s the honest truth. We just kept faith in the band and in the music and kept writing and playing shows. Rick found us and asked to work with us on the new album.
