B List: 10 RSD Releases On My Shopping List

2. Crowded House – North America Travelogue 2010 [2,000 copies]

This 3-CD set features highlights from the Kiwi’s 2010 North American Tour. Most of the hits are here including Weather With You, Don’t Dream It’s Over and Locked Out.

3. Derek and the Dominos – Got to Get Better In A Little While / Layla 7″ [2,500 copies]

Here’s our chance to hear a previously unreleased version of Got to Get Better In A Little While from Eric Clapton’s short-lived but epic Derek and the Dominos project featuring newly finished vocals by Bobby Whitlock. Oh, and I hear that Layla song is pretty good too.

4. Flaming Lips – Heady Nuggs 5-LP Box Set [5,790 copies]

The Lips have pressed five of their first six albums on Warner Bros. onto black 140gram vinyl for this interesting release. Outside of The Soft Bulletin, each of these albums have been unavailable on vinyl for a decade and the fact that each box will be individually numbered doesn’t hurt the collectability factor.

5. Mike Gordon – Inside In Double-LP [No Figure Available]

Phish bassist Mike Gordon released his first solo album, Inside In, in 2003 and on Record Store Day it will finally be available on vinyl. Would Cactus put out an album on plain jane black vinyl? Of course not, Inside In is pressed on 180g orange vinyl and best of all includes three previously unreleased outtake tracks.

6. Nirvana – Hormoaning 12″ [4,000 copies]

First released only in Australia and Japan back in 1992, Record Store Day marks the first official American release of Nirvana’s six-track Hormoaning EP. This EP features four covers and two Nevermind b-sides.

7. Phish – Two Soundchecks 7″ [2,000 copies]

Phish’s first-ever Record Store Day exclusive contains a pair of soundchecks – one from Hartford on August 14, 2009 and another from Berkeley, CA on August 7, 2010. While the Hartford soundcheck was released for free as an MP3 by the band, this marks our first taste of the Berkeley check which has been labeled as an “instrumental jam.”

8. Ray Lamontagne – Live Fall 2010 12″ [No Figure Available]

Ray’s recently released live EP has been a constant on my iPod since it came out. Here’s a chance to finally pick it up on vinyl.

9. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals – Class Mythology 7″ [2,500 copies]

Available as a double-7″ in both yellow and orange, this EP collects four unreleased outtakes from my favorite Ryan Adams period, the Cardinology-era.

10. Various Artists – Jimi Hendrix Tribute CD Single [No Figure Available]

Power of Soul: A Jimi Hendrix Tribute features artists such as Santana, Robert Randolph, Cee Lo Green, Eric Clapton and Sting tackling classic Hendrix tunes. While the album hits stores on April 12, a special three-track CD single comes out on Record Store Day and contains a previously unreleased version of Purple Haze recorded by Randolph.

Of course I need a working record player as well, but that’s a different story for another time. I’ve showed you mine now you show me yours. Let us know what RSD releases are on your wish list by leaving a comment below…

  1. That’s a good list… I hope to get Akron/Family’s release (2,000 copies), Justin Townes Earle’s (1,000), and Blitzen Trapper’s (1,500)…. oooh and the Growlers (1,000)… I would be happy with just JTE, and I think I stand a chance being in Memphis with one of the best record stores (Shangri La Records) directly across the street…
