B List: Ten Great Trey Band Downloads
Now that Phish is back together, it’s easy to discount the band member’s solo projects, but you’d be missing out on a lot of good music. For reasons we still don’t understand, Phish’s management doesn’t allow the Live Music Archive to host audience recordings of shows by Phish or the members of the band. Thankfully, a collection of Etree tapers/collectors including Ned Struzz and jmaneval have been seeding torrents of Trey Anastasio solo recordings at a fast and furious pace over at bt.etree.org.
To keep you satiated until Phish kicks off their first post-Breakup tour at Fenway Park, we’ve put together a list of ten killer Trey recordings that are available through bt.etree.org. Many of these torrents don’t get much action, so it might take you a little longer than normal to download one of these shows, but good things come to those who wait.
1. 70VP: Midwest Soup – This compilation of some hot soundboard tracks from Trey’s Fall Tour 2005 was recorded by Garry Brown and Ben Collette and compiled by Ben Collette. Highlight: Spin Jam
2. TAB: 05/25/2002 – Trey played a couple of fantastic shows at the Mountain Aire Music Festival in 2002 both of which featured fun sit-ins. On May 25th, Big Red invited Derek Trucks up to jam on Cayman Review and Night Speaks as well as the Extra Action Marching Band for the In The Wee Wee Hours encore.
3. TAB: 03/03/2001 – Ernie’s first tour after Phish went on a hiatus is arguably the best TAB run of all-time. This newly-circulated show, recorded Front Of Board, contains a masterful 23-minute Sand and a number of well-played covers including It Makes No Difference, Mellow Mood and Signed Sealed Delivered.

4. Trey Interview: 09/28/2005 - Trey sits for a 45 minute interview in which he discusses his career post-Phish.
5. TAB: 06/20/2002 – If you’ve never heard the PNC Sand, stop what you’re doing and download this show immediately. One of the best ever.
6. 70VP: 11/08/2005 – Back in the days when Trey played one long set, he often treated the crowd to an acoustic interlude to break up his performance. On this night he busted out the extremely rare original Never as well as Loving Cup, Pebbles and Marbles and Invisible. But the highlight of the night was when Page McConnell came out for Strange Design, Waves and Waste. For the encore, Big Red was joined by John Medeski, Peter Apfelbaum and McConnell for an experimental version of First Tube.

7. TAB: 03/04/2001 – Another uncirculated FOB gem from Winter 2001, this one is from the first show of a two-night stand at the gorgeous Fox Theatre in Atlanta. The show starts with a jammed out Strawberry Fields Forever that John Lennon woulda loved and contains a number of highlights including an intense Burlap, a sweet Ether Sunday and a cover of I Want to Take You Higher.
8. Trey Anastasio: 10/08/2006 – The Bad Lieutenant kicked off his Fall Tour at Webster Hall in 2006 with a memorable pair of shows featuring Jeff Sipe on drums. A string quintet conducted by Don Hart augmented the band for Love Is Freedom, Goodbye Head and The Divided Sky. This fantastic version of Divided Sky was dedicated to Trey’s mother for her 65th birthday.
9. TAB: 05/26/2002 – We already directed you towards the first of two Trey shows at the Mountain Aire Festival, but don’t ignore night two. Guitar great Will Bernard came out to lay down some insane licks during Last Tube.
10. 70VP: 11/03/2005 – Tea Leaf Green opened a number of shows for the Voltz back in 2005 and Big Red invited TLG’s Josh Clark and Ben Chambers up for a debut cover of The Beatles’ I’ve Got A Feeling that ended the set. After a quick encore break, Trey and the band returned and dropped yet another cover debut: Rocky Mountain Way. Quite a show.

yes, yes I too would like to aquire a boblehead figurine of the big red…however I feel that the second show that Trey played in Asheville was one of the best where he marched in highschool band style with Mike, and shortly into the show proclaimed this to be one of the greatest towns he knows and swears to always return…PHISH 2009!!!

i can vouch for the 3/3/01 sand, which was followed by a little quadrophic toppling. don’t miss the dave sit-in at richmond a few days prior. i’m not a dave fan, but that was special.
also not to be missed, the 40-minute burlap sack n pumps from either 7/27/01 or 7/31/01, i can’t remember which one. i was at all these shows so i’m partial, but the sack-n-pumps start-stop jam is just stupid good. if anyone has quality recordings of these shows, i’m all ears.
check that. it’s the jibboo>circles from 7/31 that is just sick sick sick.
