Better Late Than Never: Green Apple Lineup
When the one month ’til Earth Day mark passed without a lineup announcement, we were starting to wonder if in fact the Green Apple Festival was really happening this year. Well we finally have a lineup announcement, and the news is better for some cities than it is for others.

Things look good on 4/20 in D.C. where The Roots (and friends), Gov’t Mule, Umphrey’s McGee and Toots head up the killer National Mall lineup. Yet NYCers draw the short end of the stick this time where Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Big Head Todd & The Monsters and Vusi Mahlasela will perform at Central Park.
Meanwhile Denver (The Nevilles, Rose Hill Drive and The Duo), San Francisco (Mickey Hart, YMSB and Brett Dennen), and Los Angeles (Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal, Juliette and the Licks) all score fantastic lineups, while Miami gets a boy band (Menudo) and Mr. Wendell (Arrested Development).
But it’s not only about the music, it’s about the environment. The Green Apple Festival has quickly become the America’s Largest Earth Day Celebration, and has expanded to eight cities this year. Did we mention the best part of the Earth Day events on 4/20? They are all absolutely free.

The third annual Green Apple Festival, produced in partnership with Earth Day Network and presented by Chase, announces “America’s Largest Earth Day Celebration”– a weekend of music and environmental awareness culminating on Sunday, April 20th with eight free festivals occurring simultaneously at landmark locations across the U.S.
Approximately 500,000 people are expected to attend the all-inclusive, interactive and free public events in New York City (Central Park), Washington, DC (The National Mall), Chicago IL (Lincoln Park Zoo), Miami FL (Bicentennial Park), Denver CO (City Park), Dallas TX (Fair Park), San Francisco CA (Golden Gate Park) and Los Angeles CA (Santa Monica Pier).
Earth Day Network, the non-profit organization created by the original founders of Earth Day in 1970, and Green Apple Festival are proud to announce that the National Mall event in Washington, DC alone will bring together world environmental leaders, community activists, A-list talent and crowds in the hundreds of thousands to make this one of the largest Earth Day gatherings in U.S. history.

isn’t this called ‘green apple’ because of its birthplace/origin of NYC? so no offense to skaggs and co, big head todd and Vusi Mahlasela (both of whom i’ve seen live and loved), but where’s the love on the music for the NYC green apple?
DC love is hot. Awesome.

More than makes up for it.
Actually, it doesn’t make up for it at all.
That three-day lineup is nothing special by NYC standards.
This is really weak. They couldn’t get one “jam band”? Ricky Skaggs is the headliner!? This could be cool…with Hornsby. This lineup is really unfortunate. Tea Leaf is in town, and they couldn’t get a Central Park set out of them!? This almost makes me want to litter! I know who is not doing s#!t for the environment on Earth day…this guy!
Just noticed my friend’s band The Frequency is on the bill for the L.A. Green Apple. very cool indeed.
Wow , New York’s line-up is more like the “rotten apple” festie…
“This almost makes me want to litter!”
Ha, best comment in HT history!
i can’t believe Menudo is the is the best they could get in miami. green apple is just lame in miami.
There’s a few other jamband mainstays in town who passed on the freebie: RAQ w/ Pnuma Trio (2 nights), Zen Tricksters, Garaj Mahal, and Hot Buttered Rum (on the bill with TLG on Friday).
wow. nyc line up sucks. especially in comparison. at least there is surprise me mr. davis on 4/20. :)
Menudo was surprisingly very entertaining yesterday. i didn’t know much about them but after they performed I was AMAZED. Don’t judge them until you’ve seen them perform. They were my favorite act hands down, i thought every1 else sucked. I can honestly say Menudo is not ur typical boyband and they did dif. types of music i’m def. gonna watch them!
