BG: More From Mermaid Avenue

Jay Farrar seems to be getting a lot of musical inspiration from the past these days. As we’ve previously reported, the Son Volt front man teamed up with DC4C’s Ben Gibbard to record an album based on a Jack Kerouac novel.

Farrar will now take a page out of his old Uncle Tupelo band mate’s playbook by putting out an album of unrecorded Woody Guthrie songs. While there isn’t too much information floating around about the project, the album was recorded in New York earlier this year and will feature My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and Centro-matic’s Will Johnson. We’re big fans of the first two Mermaid Avenue albums, so we’re excited to hear what Farrar does with this new batch of unearthed lyrics.

Finally, while we’re weirdly excited about Bob Dylan’s Christmas In the Heart, fellow tribesman Neil Diamond is also set to drop album full of holiday cheer. While Diamond’s A Cherry Cherry Christmas will include plenty of the traditional yuletide classics, the Jewish Elvis also didn’t want to ignore his roots and decided to include his take on pretty much the only Hannukah song that gets any radio play – Adam Sandler’s Hannukah Song. The track, which was produced by Guns ‘N Roses guitarist DJ Ashba, can be downloaded here for your listening pleasure or amusement.
