Bust Outs: Caps and Nuts Edition

Umphrey’s McGee, Nuthin’ But a “G” Thang – 2/28/05

From the band that has covered just about everything under the sun – including no shortage of rap classics like Ain’t No Fun, Regulate, and Lose Yourself – comes the old occasional Umphrey’s rotational, Ain’t Nuthin But a “G” Thang. This list simply would not be complete without at least one crack at the song that changed the game forever. No disrespect to the Sugarhill Gang or Kurtis Blow, but Dr. Dre and Snoop built rap into what it is today with the Chronic.

Roster McCabe, Regulate – 1/23/09

Put your hands on the vehicle and do as the men say, because these fellas mean business. Roster McCabe, hailing from Minneapolis, put the smack down on Warren G and Nate Dogg’s Regulate. While the recording here leaves a bit to be desired, this is one of my favorite covers here, not only because the vocals are by far the least painful (read: white), but because they build up some pretty monumental jams towards the end with peaking guitar solos, some chunky low end, and best of all, a rousing sing-along of the song’s final verse.

Tea Leaf Green, Who Am I? What’s My Name? -> Planet of Green Love – 09/10/04

Tea Leaf Green gets the award for the best cop hating in their rap segment as they lead the crowd in a rousing “F*ck the Missouri Police chant” before launching into their original rap number Planet of Green Love, because they got fined earlier that day for rolling with contraband up in their ride. The real treat though is the one everybody knows, but never tire of hearing; TLG blowing the hinges off Snoop’s greatest hit, Who Am I? What’s My Name?

Phish, Get Jiggy With It – 11/20/98

What do you mean Will Smith isn’t gangsta rap? He’s from West Philly; it’s nothin’ but thugz up in there.

Widespread Panic, Hot in Herre – 12/31/02

Last but not least, but rather the best, we have JB dressed like Eric Cartman for a special Halloween rendition of Nelly’s Hot In Herre. This one requires video evidence as Panic turns the thermometer up so high that according to the YouTube comments, some well endowed fans actually do take off all their clothes. My monitor is too dim to make it out, but they say it’s at the 4:58 mark. Verdict?
