Audio: Listen To Neil Young & Crazy Horse Bust Out Down By The River At Day Two Of The Austin City Limits Music Festival

Written by on 10.14.2012 | ACL, Festivals, Neil Young, News

At 66 years of age Neil Young hasn’t lost his step. The legendary Canadian rocker has regrouped with his longtime backing band, Crazy Horse, this year to record two studio albums and embark on a multi-leg tour of the United States and Canada. After eight years apart, Young and the Horse have picked up where they left off with their feedback jam-heavy performances winning raves from both casual and fervent Neil fans. Dubbed “Alchemy” in a recent NeilYoung.com news item which hints that a documentary about the tour is in the works (as do these signs posted at Neil’s shows), Neil Young and Crazy Horse descended upon Zilker Park in Austin, Texas last night for a headlining set at Day Two of the ACL Fest.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Cinnamon Girl (Live at ACL Fest)

Despite their propensity to extend songs for 20 minutes or longer, Neil Young and Crazy Horse haven’t experimented much with setlists on the tour. For instance, all 13 Alchemy Tour shows have started with the six-song segment. The major exception takes place in the encore slot, where the group varies which “hit” or “hits” they’ll play. Young has filled that slot with fan-favorites such as Mr. Soul, Tonight’s The Night, Roll Another Number, Like A Hurricane and Cortez The Killer, leading up to last night’s festival set. Though there wasn’t an encore per se, Crazy Horse finished off their headlining set with the first Down By The River since March 9th, 2004 and Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black).

For those looking for audio of a full Neil Young and Crazy Horse set, you can download Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Global Citizen Festival performance straight from the TV feed in all its high-quality glory. As for Down By The River, it was over 15 minutes and potent as fuck. Take a listen.

AfterNews: Austin City Limits Festival Expands / Dave Grohl Talks Foo Fighters Hiatus and Mike Gordon Updates Hotline

Written by on 10.02.2012 | ACL, Cactus, Foo Fighters, News

As had been previously reported, the Austin City Limits Music Festival will expand to two weekends in 2013 following in the footsteps of Coachella. ACL Fest organizers have just announced the dates of the two weekends in 2013 the event will be held: October 4 – 6 and October 11 – 13.

In other news, Dave Grohl has posted a letter to his fans about the Foo Fighters’ plans (or lack of plans). He makes it clear the band isn’t breaking up, but that they are about to take a lengthy break:

Hey everyone…

Dave here. Just wanted to write and thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for another incredible year. (Our 18th, to be exact!) We truly never could have done any of this without you…

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far. I never thought we COULD make it this far, to be honest. There were times when I didn’t think the band would survive. There were times when I wanted to give up. But… I can’t give up this band. And I never will. Because it’s not just a band to me. It’s my life. It’s my family. It’s my world.

Yes… I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again. It feels strange to say that, but it’s a good thing for all of us to go away for a while. It’s one of the reasons we’re still here. Make sense? I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it’s good to just… put it back in the garage for a while…

But, no gold watches or vacations just yet… I’ll be focusing all of my energy on finishing up my Sound City documentary film and album for worldwide release in the very near future. A year in the making, it could be the biggest, most important project I’ve ever worked on. Get ready… it’s coming.

Me, Taylor, Nate, Pat, Chris, and Rami… I’m sure we’ll all see you out there… somewhere…

Thank you, thank you, thank you…

Dave

Finally, Phish bassist Mike Gordon has updated his famed hotline (212-330-9092) and among stories of cooking mishaps, discusses the fact that his solo band won’t be touring this fall. Gordon said in the message that though the group was hitting its stride at their last gigs, they are taking time to re-invent the project by working on new material, a new stage design and more “new” elements.

Briefly: Austin City Limits Fest Sked

Written by on 07.13.2010 | ACL

Camp Bisco is this coming weekend and the schedule for that fest came out a few days ago. On the other end of the “time to plan” spectrum is the Austin City Limits Festival as organizers of that event have just released the full schedule three months in advance. While Sunday’s headliners, The Eagles, don’t have any competition, The Strokes and Phish both play at the same time on Friday and Muse and M.I.A. conflict on Saturday. CLICK HERE for the complete schedule for October 8 – 10 in Austin’s Zilker Park.

You may also note a few artists on the schedule who weren’t part of the initial announcement. The Black Lips, First Aid Kit, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Sahara Smith, Silversun Pickups, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Vonnegutt, Shearwater and NINJASONIK have all been added to the bill. Tickets for the 2010 Austin City Limits Music Festival are sold out.

Leftovers: Petty/Aerosmith/ACL and More

As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Tom Petty is about to release a career spanning live anthology containing 48 overdub-less tracks selected by Petty, Heartbreaker Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate on November 24. The Tom Petty Superhighway Tour will start on September 29 for digital purchasers of the set in which fans will be allowed to download 24 FLACs (!!!) or MP3s of the Anthology’s 48 songs over the course of the next two weeks with the other 24 coming on the November 24th release day.

As much as I want the Superhighway package, I’m going to hold out until November 22 when the deluxe edition comes out. Not only do you get an additional 14 songs on a bonus CD in the deluxe edition but you get two live DVDs and vinyl from a Petty concert in 1976. Too bad they won’t let people who pre-order the deluxe edition download the Superhighway Tour tracks.

Here’s a look at a few other stories of interest…

  • Aerosmith is finally playing those makeup shows in Hawaii, but guitarist Joe Perry warns TMZ that the show may suck.
  • As per usual, the list of scheduled performers for this year’s Austin City Limits broadcasts kicks ass. Here’s the full list of performances…

October 3: Dave Matthews Band
October 10: Ben Harper and Relentless7
October 17: Kenny Chesney
October 24: Andrew Bird / St. Vincent
October 31: M. Ward / Okkervil River

Wednesday’s Intermezzo: ACL Webcast

This weekend’s Austin City Limits festival gets the AT&T Blueroom Webcast treatment starting on Friday at 12:45PM EDT. Click here for the full schedule that includes Vampire Weekend, Drive-By Truckers, Blues Traveler and The Raconteurs. It’s rare that AT&T gets most of the big names at a festie to sign on, but they’ve done a stellar job this time around.

While we’re waiting for Friday, here’s some links to enjoy…

Finally, four major labels have made a deal with SanDisk to start manufacturing microSD memory cards featuring an album at 320kbps and with no DRM. Will this new format catch on? We’d be surprised.

Wednesday Intermezzo: Here Comes The ACL

We’ve finally reached the point of no return. That’s right, we’ve completely run out of jokes about the obscene amount of festival lineups that have been announced recently. So let’s just say that Beck, The Raconteurs, Foo Fighters, David Byrne and Plant/Krauss will headline this year’s Austin City Limits festival on September 26-28 at Zilker Park. Be sure to check out the full lineup of 130 bands to see if your favorite act made the bill.

It’s Wednesday, so that means you’re due for another batch of links:

Finally, original Jane’s Addiction bassist Eric Avery hasn’t participated in any of the band’s reunions since they first broke up in 1991. But Avery will rejoin his old mates when the band gets back together for a special one-off performance at the NME Awards, where they will receive the Godlike Genius Award on April 23.
