Anders Osborne Rambles With Phil & Members of Furthur

Written by on 05.16.2013 | Anders Osborne, Furthur, News, Phil Lesh

Last night at Terrapin Crossroads, Furthur members Phil Lesh, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo and Jeff Chimenti teamed up with guitarist Anders Osborne for a West Coast Ramble. Osborne had already made his mark at last month’s Spring Rambles with Luther Dickinson, but seemed to have picked up where he left off from those memorable shows.

The first set was filled with treats such as Anders-sung covers of Ramblin’ Man by the Allman Brothers Band, Neil Young’s Heart Of Gold and Bob Marley’s I Shot The Sheriff as well as Grateful Dead rarity Reuben and Cerise. In addition to Reuben and Cerise, John Kadlecik handled vocals on Grateful Dead staples Deal, Ramble On Rose and They Love Each Other.

Set One: Deal (jk), Ramblin’ Man (ao), Reuben And Cerise (jk) > Sugaree (ao), Ramble On Rose (jk), Heart Of Gold (ao), They Love Each Other (jk), I Shot The Sheriff (ao)

Set Two: Jam > Scarlet (jk,ao) > The Harder They Come (ao) > Fire On The Mountain (ao), Small Spacey Jam > Dark Star v1 (all) > The Other One (pl) > Dark Star v2 (all) > St. Stephen (all) > Midnight Hour (ao)

Encore: Burning on the Inside (ao)

The second set opened with an interesting segment that saw the ensemble insert a cover of The Harder They Come into the usual Scarlet > Fire pairing. Then, the band went into Primal Dead mode for a Dark Star > The Other One > Dark Star > St. Stephen sequence before ending the set with the Anders-sung Midnight Hour. Osborne had a chance to show off one of his originals as Burning On The Inside served as the encore.

Busy Day @ Terrapin Crossroads: Stu Allen & Rob Barraco Brunch > Anders Osborne, Phil Lesh, Luther Dickinson Ramble

It’s hard to believe that Terrapin Crossroads is just a smidge over one year old. The Phil Lesh-owned venue has provided so many magical collaborations that previously only existed in our dreams. Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson playing THREE shows with a band Phil put together? What a fantastic idea that turned out to be as good as expected when it actually took place. Last night was the finale of the three-night stand of Spring Rambles that saw Phil Lesh, Anders Osborne and Luther Dickinson team up with Grahame Lesh, Tony Leone and Jason Crosby at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif. However, that wasn’t the only show at the venue on Saturday leading to Lesh to call it “one of most energetic weekends of music here yet for me” when the music finally stopped just after midnight.

Early in the day guitarist Stu Allen was the featured performer at Terrapin Crossroads during brunch. Allen treated brunchers to covers from the likes of The Beatles, Steely Dan and Bruce Cockburn as well as some Grateful Dead staples. Drummer Pete Lavezzoli joined Stu at one point as did keyboardist Rob Barraco who was in town with Dark Star Orchestra.

Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Tony, Jason and Grahame’s Second Ramble With Phil Lesh @ Terrapin Crossroads

After Thursday’s show turned our heads, we were excited to see what “Uncle” Phil Lesh, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Tony Leone, Grahame Lesh and Jason Crosby had in store for their second of three Spring Rambles at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif. last night. Just like Thursday’s opening show, Friday saw the newly-formed ensemble mix blues classics, NMAS tunes and a bunch of songs from the Grateful Dead’s touring repertoire. Then, for good measure, the band threw in a pair of Neil Young gems in Cortez The Killer and Down By The River for good measure.

Once again, the sextet infused plenty of improvisation throughout each set. Band members took turns handling vocals with Luther stepping to mic on Rollin’ and Tumblin’, How I Wish My Train Would Come and Mean Old Wind Died Down, while Anders fronted the group for Friend of the Devil, Big Boss Man, Down By The River, Cortez The Killer and Fire On The Mountain. During his usual donor rap, Phil remarked that the evening marked the 52nd anniversary of the first manned spaceflight.

Here’s the setlist from last night’s Spring Ramble @ Terrapin Crossroads…

Review: Anders Osborne Tears Up The Bowl

Anders Osborne @ Brooklyn Bowl – December 21

Words: Chad Berndtson
Photos: Jeremy Gordon

Ultimately, Anders Osborne always sounds like himself. But as far as rock-history comparisons are ever useful, the one I keep coming back to is vintage Crazy Horse era Neil Young, where you’re not only getting the eardrum-shattering, brain-exploding guitar squall you came for but there’s also the sense of portent and foreboding, ever-present no matter how sweet or gentle the song appears. Anders writes heavy songs, tender songs, gutsy songs and sentimental songs, and your only guarantee is that each will be completely presented — merely playing or lightly jamming is never enough for his passionate, tortured soul — as an exhaustively potent workout.

[All Photos by Jeremy Gordon]

It was nice to see Osborne back for a full-on New York show, particularly after he bagged last month’s HeadCount finale at the last minute. Better yet, it was two shows — I caught the blistering first — and a completely different setlist each night, with the emphasis balanced between Anders staples and a sampling of new material and bustout covers.

Night one, overall, was by Anders standards a workmanlike two hours, adequately awesome, with the expected mix of black-chaos drug rockers and soulful, “we’re going to make it after all” kindnesses. Bassist Carl Dufresne and drummer Eric Bolivar are an effective rhythmic chassis, equally as patient with Anders as they are willing to indulge his many, roaring guitar flights. The ubiquitous Scott Metzger played the whole show as guitar foil, though Metzger as a guest musician was, as usual, respectful, content with a support function unless specifically egged on by Anders to shred a bit.

Karl Denson & Anders Osborne Bring Sticky Fingers East

Written by on 12.07.2011 | Anders Osborne, KDTU, News

Earlier this fall those towards the Western United States had a number of opportunities to catch Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe perform the Rolling Stones’ landmark Sticky Fingers LP in its entirety with special guest Anders Osborne. Those of us in the east were biding our time, hoping Karl and Anders would bring the Sticky Fingers show towards us, especially after videos started to surface. Today, KDTU announced a batch of Stones-infused gigs with Anders in February that fulfill our wish.

Following a two-night stand in Crystal Bay, Nevada on Jan. 27-28 without Anders, Osborne will meet up with the band in New York City on February 8 to continue the Sticky Fingers tour. The run continues on the 9th in Falls Church, Virginia and then on the 10th in Baltimore, Maryland. KDTU and Anders then head west for a Feb. 11th show at Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh and a pair of Midwest gigs in Indianapolis on the 16th and Chicago on the 17th. Anders is booked for that entire week of Sticky Fingers shows. Tickets for most of these shows are available now through KDTU Ticketing.

Cover Wars: Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young)

Neil Young’s Ohio, made famous by Crosby Stills Nash & Young, is a protest song referencing the horrible events at Kent State University on May 4th, 1970 that left four dead and nine injured. Recorded just three weeks after the fact, it was pressed to single and rushed to radio stations with the B-Side Find The Cost of Freedom.

The Contestants:

Artist: Anders Osborne & Big Chief Monk Boudreaux
Album: Bury the Hatchet
The Skinny: HT favorite Anders Osborne leads off this week’s Cover Wars with this studio acoustic rendition and a little help form Big Chief Monk Boudreaux.

Karl Denson Loves Covering Albums – Video of Sticky Fingers and Greyboy Allstars’ West Coast Boogaloo NYE Announcement

Written by on 11.04.2011 | Anders Osborne, Greyboy Allstars, KDTU

When we first broke the news that Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe would team up with Anders Osborne to perform the Rolling Stones’ landmark Sticky Fingers LP at venues across the country, we had a bit of doubt as to how it would come out. Now that the tour is reaching its end, we’ve had ample chance to judge the results and we think the performers crushed it.

We’ve compiled a playlist of KDTU w/ Anders Osborne playing Sticky Fingers and while we weren’t able to find any decent footage of You Gotta Move, Sister Morphine and Moonlight Mile as performed by the ensemble, we’ve included the Stones’ album tracks in their place. So check it out, we especially dig their versions of Sway, Brown Sugar and Dead Flowers…
