Watch Wilco Establish Austin City Limits Showmance in 1999

Written by on 11.07.2012 | Austin City Limits, Videos, Wilco

Austin City Limits executive producer Terry Lickona summed up the relationship between Wilco and the legendary television program best when he said, “When people ask what kind of music Austin City Limits stands for, there’s one band that sums it up better than any other – Wilco!” Wilco made their ACL debut in 1999 and have since been featured on the show a total of four times. Only Alison Krauss and Union Station and Lyle Lovett have appeared on ACL as much since 1999.

Today, we look back at the start of the Wilco/ACL showmance as a video featuring Wilco’s entire performance from August 16, 1999 has surfaced. Over the course of 70 minutes, only some of which was broadcast, Jeff Tweedy and Co. ran through the best material from 1995′s A.M., 1996′s Being There and 1999′s Summerteeth. This was during the creative peak of Tweedy’s relationship with multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett who is featured throughout the episode. Take a look…

Austin City Limits Season 38 Begins w/ Radiohead This Weekend

Written by on 10.03.2012 | Austin City Limits, News, Radiohead

The 38th season of legendary television program Austin City Limits, the longest-running music series in American television history, kicks off this weekend with the full hour devoted to Radiohead’s ACL debut in which they drew heavily from their most recent albums. The episode will pull from Radiohead’s March 6th, 2012 performance at the ACL’s home, The Moody Theater. “As if there was any doubt, this rare full-hour performance by one of the most adventurous bands in rock music was well worth the wait,” says Terry Lickona, Executive Producer of Austin City Limits in a statement. “Thom Yorke and the boys are on top of their game, and their exuberance on stage really comes across. They continue to amaze, whether it’s with an old classic, a new twist or an obscure track all but forgotten.”

Here’s a preview of what you can expect on ACL this weekend…

All in all, the 38th season will contain 13 hour-long episodes. Six of these episodes will air this fall, while the seven remaining installments will air in early 2013.

Austin City Limits Scores Radiohead

Written by on 12.15.2011 | Austin City Limits, News, Radiohead

The next batch of artists set to participate in legendary TV show Austin City Limits’ 38th season has been announced and includes Radiohead, one of the biggest bands in the world. Radiohead was already set to visit Austin on March 7 for a show at the Frank Erwin Center. No details about the taping, which is expected to take place at the Moody Theater, have been revealed. For a chance at a “golden ticket,” be sure to follow ACL’s Facebook page.

Other acts set to tape performances for this season of ACL include The Shins, the Civil Wars and Rodrigo y Gabriela and C.U.B.A. The 38th season is shaping up to be among the best in the influential program’s history. Musicians appreciate the chance to play more than the one song they’re allotted on late night shows and respect the program’s legacy. ACL’s move into a high-tech venue that holds more people doesn’t hurt either.

Intermezzo: Work For a Free ACL Ticket

Tickets for this year’s Austin City Limits Festival sold out weeks ago, but those willing to work can exchange three five-hour shifts & a $15 application fee for a weekend pass to the event. Visit workexchangeteam.com for more details and to apply for the ACL and/or Festival 8 teams.

In other ACL news, the schedule for the festival – which takes place in Austin’s Zilker Park on October 2 – 4 – has just been released.

Let’s take a look at some other stories we’ve missed this week…

  • Paul McCartney will put out a live album on November 15

This album will be a “live summary” of the concerts given by the ex-Beatle in July, while he played for the very first time at the Citi Field Stadium in New-York City for three memorable nights, on July 17th,18th and 21st 2009.

This CD album is likely to be sold in a box set containing not only a live album but also the DVD of the concert. [via maccablog]

  • Celebrate Brock Butler’s 30th birthday by buying his new EP

Pedro Loopez is a short collection of tracks assembled by Brock, reminiscent of his previous release “Instrumentals & Incidentals,” this collection is a bit more natural sounding with less midi and more cowbell. The original track files will be offered up as well during the coming weeks so Brock’s fans can assemble their own creations to listen to. Look for an announcement about that soon. [via TheRevButler]

  • Benjy Eisen talks to Roseanne Cash about singing with Tweedy

“I know Jeff just a little bit,” Cash tells Spinner. “I’ve met him a few times and I’m a huge fan of not only Wilco but Golden Smog and all the rest of it, and it was just a great honor for him to do this.”

Tweedy duets with Cash on ‘Long Black Veil,’ a country standard originally performed by Lefty Frizzell and composed by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin. [via Spinner]

Finally, anyone who thought guitarist John Kadlecik’s successful stint with Bobby and Phil as part of last weekend’s Furthur shows would take away from Dark Star Orchestra’s never-ending touring schedule needs to think again. The DSO are playing a full slate of shows starting tomorrow night in Seattle and running through the just announced New Year’s Eve show at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore. READ ON for more details…

Bloggy Goodness: Zimmy Claus

It’s hard to think about the holiday season when temperatures have been soaring above 90 degrees of late, but news surfaced last week that Bob Dylan had headed into the studio to record material for – of all things – a Christmas album. Dylan, who is no stranger to Christian rock, has already laid down renditions of Must Be Santa, Here Comes Santa Claus, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and O Little Town of Bethlehem. Nothing like scaring the hell out of your kids with Zimmy’s renditions of these holiday classics.

Finally, the folks at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will honor the landmark long-running television show Austin City Limits by designating their studios as a historic rock and roll site. The studio will join nine other rock and roll landmarks around the country including the Whiskey-A-Go-Go and WJW Radio in Cleveland where Alan Freed was credited with popularizing the term “rock and roll.” Austin City Limits will kick off its 35th season on October 3 with a recently recorded Dave Matthews Band performance.
