A few months back we reported on a story which a UK tabloid was circulating that the late Kurt Cobain’s ashes had been stolen from Courtney Love’s Hollywood home. Well, fast forward a few months and we’ve got the next chapter in the story. According to NME, Australian artist Natascha Stellmach has come into possession of some of the Nirvana front man’s ashes and plans on smoking them in a joint as part of an art exhibition entitled Set Me Free on October 11 at the Wagner & Partner Gallery in Berlin, Germany. We can’t make this shit up kids, even if we tried.

Finally, the folks over at JamBase are extremely excited about the impending Presidential Election that’s just about a month or so away. In a effort get you excited too, they have asked a number of musicians to give their thoughts on the democratic process by asking them three simple, yet to the point questions about the election, music and politics. Over the course of the next 31 days they will be revealing the answers, first up Drive-By Truckers lead singer Patterson Hood. What a cool concept.
One of the most talked about musicals of 2008 isn’t even on Broadway…yet. The off-broadway dance musical Fela! is earning raves from anyone who attends. Just ask the NY Post or our friends at Intelligent Rectum about this brand-new show.

Fela! tells the story of Fela Kuti’s meteoric rise as a composer and performer and includes plenty of afrobeat music to get you movin’. We haven’t checked it out yet, but hope to make it over to 37 Arts at 450 West 37th Street before too long.
Let’s take one last look at the ‘nets before heading out for the long weekend…
Finally, Roger Friedman of Fox News breaks the news that the surviving members of the Grateful Dead will team up once more to raise money and awareness for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Friedman thinks the band will team up with Warren for a gig in Philadelphia or Pittsburgh on October 13. Sweet deal.
We’ve got yet another new festival to tell you about, and this one takes place nine miles from Denver. The inaugural Mile High Festival will feature five stages of music spread out across 24 soccer fields at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City on July 19-20. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer will be headlining the Mile High, which boasts more of a mainstream lineup than some of the other festivals in the area. Oh, and we’d be remiss to not mention that Michael Franti and Spearhead will be in the house.

I love Mikey and Spearhead, but how do those guys get on every single festival lineup? While you ponder that question check out our latest batch of links:
And now for something completely different here’s 50 Animals with Drinking Problems from our friends at Best Week Ever. We especially dig number 22.
Just one week from today the Langerado Music Festival kicks off at Big Cypress in the Florida Everglades. I’ve attended the last two Langerado festivals, but this year’s lineup takes things to a new level. As someone who doesn’t get to many festivals, I think the best part of going is the enjoyment I get from checking out artists I haven’t seen before. Here’s the second part of my list of ten bands I’m excited to see for the first time at Langerado:

1. The Avett Brothers - North Carolina’s Avett Brothers play deeply spiritual music that seems to appeal to a diverse range of music fans. The songs that Seth and Scott Avett write are gritty tales of life played on basic acoustic instruments. Their most recent release, Emotionalism, shows the wide range of styles in the fellas’ music. Within one song on the album you may hear elements of Calypso followed closely by a bluegrass stomp. I’m very interested to see how they pull of this melange of styles live. Read on for more on the Avetts and four other bands….

Rolling Stone’s David Fricke sat down with John Paul Jones for an exclusive interview about Led Zeppelin’s reunion show. The big news out of the article is that the members of the band are gonna meet later this month to discuss the future. Is there any chance in hell this reunion tour doesn’t happen?

Jones only offers lukewarm praise for Jason Bonham’s efforts on the drums, which only further fuels speculation of a new drummer coming on board for the tour. So read that, and then let’s end the week with some heady, heady linkage:
Finally, let’s end the week with a brand spanking new video — check out The Avett Brothers’ Paranoia In B Flat Major, courtesy of the folks at Spinner.
When I was seven years old my Uncle Bobby gave me a copy of Dave Marsh’s Book of Rock Lists, and I studied it harder than the Torah before my Bar Mitzvah. I’ve got a short attention span, so I loved being able to sit down for five minutes and learn all sorts of new things about rock and roll. And digesting all the lists in that book allowed my eight-year-old self to freak out the adults by telling them 20 things they didn’t know about Bruce Springsteen.

From the day Ace asked me to work with him on Hidden Track, I knew that I’d finally have a chance to share all of the lists I’ve made up in mind since my uncle gave me that book. Now let’s take a look at the 10 best B Lists of Hidden Track’s first year of existence. Click on the title to look back at the actual lists…
10. The B List: Brothers In Arms — 09/13/2007
Recently we put together a list of 10 favorite sets of brothers that jam together
Scott and Seth Avett [The Avett Brothers]

The Avett Brothers of Mount Pleasant, North Carolina may play instruments typically associated with bluegrass, but the sound that comes out is more Nirvana than Bill Monroe. Scott and Seth began writing songs together in 2000 and are beginning to gain national notoriety for their unique batch of originals. In May the boys made their television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The Avett Brothers will be on the road through the end of the year. Read on…

Twenty-four hours ago we posted, and this is a technical journalism phrase, “a wickedly kickass” photo gallery of the inaugural Echo Project’s first day from the masterful Dave Vann. If you missed it, you can click here and make up for your unforgivable transgression…or you can be a stubborn dick about it. As the legendary philosophers from Black Sheep once directed, the choice is yours.

Thankfully the Illustrious Mr. Vann is back with the second of his three sweet galleries. Saturday mixed the usual festival touring bands like Disco Biscuits, moe., Tea Leaf Green and Perpetual Groove with electronica-based acts like MSTRKRFT, Thievery Corporation (above) and Brazilian Girls, adding a touch of hip hop from Common, folk rock from the Avett Brothers and some singer/songwriter shenanigans from Cat Power. Oh, but there’s plenty more as well, so get goin’…

So read on after the jump for the second of three photo galleries from Echo, and hey, if you’ve got some stories from the festival, let ‘em loose in the comments.
