HT faves My Morning Jacket return to Madison Square Garden tonight for their second-ever headlining gig at the “World’s Greatest Arena” and first since New Year’s Eve 2008-2009. Band of Horses will open starting around 7:30 with MMJ set to take the stage around 9.
Both Jeff and I will be in attendance and we’re trying something new this evening – a live blog. Thanks to our friends at ThisIsMyNextJam.com, you’ll be able to get our thoughts on the show as it happens, especially during My Morning Jacket’s set.
Last night, Band of Horses stopped by Conan O’Brien’s TBS talk show to perform the title track from 2010′s Infinite Arms release. Ben Bridwell’s haunting vocals really pop in this tune and the band has clearly got this arrangement down. Take a look…
It’s mostly a Rock & Roll recap here at Last Week’s Sauce. Notably, three of the bands (Blues Traveler, Pearl Jam, and Ween) all had their major studio debuts within one year of each other in 1990-1991. We round things out from the likes of jamband supergroup 30db covering Wilco and Keller Williams collaborating with his friends The Keels.
[Thanks to DATBRAD for this week's photo]
And we continue to take all the selected tracks, normalize them, create some simple fades and put it into one easy to download MP3 for you.

In the first edition of Last Week’s Sauce of the month we led off with a couple of tracks from 30db, which would normally mean I would ignore any new tapes that popped up. But a cover of Wilco’s Handshake Drugs is the type of thing we make exceptions for. Brendan Bayliss takes lead vocals on this one just a few months after Umphrey’s McGee debuted their cover of Wilco’s I Am Trying To Break Your Heart on Valentine’s Day. For the time being the full-band 30db gigs have past, but there is still one more chance to see Brendan Bayliss & Jeff Austin play the tunes from One Man Show: Thursday night at Summer Camp at 8pm at the Campfire stage.

After putting out albums in back to back years, it’s been three long years since we’ve heard any new music from Band Of Horses. The band dropped their major label debut Infinite Arms last week and stopped by the Late Night With David Letterman to perform Laredo…
Band Of Horses just wrapped up their opening duties for both Pearl Jam and Widespread Panic and will now head out for a headlining tour which kicked off last night at the Roxy in West Hollywood.
If you gave us a chance to sing Hunger Strike with Pearl Jam in front of a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden, we’d probably freak out, screw up some of the high harmonies, gush over the band and hug Eddie Vedder, so there’s something incredibly endearing about Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwell’s excitement as he lived the dream last Friday night…
There’s plenty of links to share, so let’s get to it…
Finally, we haven’t paid much attention to the latest leg of the Clapton/Winwood Tour because it’s happening in Europe, so we were shocked to find out the two legendary rockers have added a cover of The Shape I’m In by The Band to their repertoire. What we’re not shocked about is that their version rips. Only two clips of Eric and Steve covering The Shape I’m In have surfaced thus far and while this particular one doesn’t have great video, the audio is really good. Take a listen…
Though Creedence Clearwater Revival’s 1969 release Willy And The Poor Boys is best known for hits Down On The Corner & Fortunate Son, the album closes with Effigy – its longest track clocking in at almost 6:30. With it being a relatively obscure CCR tune, we’ve only got four covers this week.
The Contestants:
Band of Horses: Leading off this week we’ve got Band of Horses who will release their third studio album Infinite Arms a week from today. Lead vocalist Ben Bridwell has a great voice for this cover, be sure to also check out their cover of Ron Wood’s Act Together.

For this week’s edition you will be serenaded by two of the best tenors in the live music scene: Jim James of My Morning Jacket and Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. Sorry Jon Gutwillig, while your vocal stylings are also included, you just didn’t make the cut.

Leading off this week we’ve got the Band of Horses performing a great cover of a J.J. Cale song followed by a track from their upcoming album Infinite Arms. These two tunes were played in sequence, but I edited out some crowd noise/band introductions in between them. Band of Horses play tonight at the House of Blues in Orlando.

On my personal short list of albums that I’ve been eagerly anticipating this year is the Infinite Arms, the third full-length from Band Of Horses, which hits stores on May 18. The South Carolina via Seattle, WA-act recently dropped the gorgeous looking video that mixes still photography and animation for that album’s lead single, Compliments. Take a look…
Band Of Horses will open two dates for HT Faves Widespread Panic at the Walnut Creek Amphitheater on April 23 and 24, before spending the majority of the spring holding down that slot on Pearl Jam’s Northern American tour, with a handful of solo headlining shows sprinkled in for good measure.
Last Week’s Sauce is a recurring column featuring recordings of shows that took place the previous week. This is a special edition that exclusively features recordings from Bonnaroo captured the weekend of June 12th – 14th. Thanks to caymenreview for this week’s photos.

Al Green, 63, is still out there doing it and sounding great as he leads the Bonnaroo crowd through a great rendition of Let’s Stay Together. Green plays this Saturday at the Ottawa Jazz Festival.

In our never ending quest to keep you up to date on all the festival announcements that bombard our in-boxes each day comes artist line up for the sixth annual McDowell Mountain Festival. The fest, which will takes place at the Westworld Polo Grounds in Scottsdale, AZ on April 24 and 25, will feature sets from The Flaming Lips, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Matisyahu, Hot Tuna, Railroad Earth, NRPS, Assembly Of Dust and a slew of other acts. Tickets are currently on-sale now for both day and weekend passes, and are limited to 10,000 for each day – so grab yours now.
If you can’t make it out to Arizona for the fest, then maybe you’ll be able to hit one of these recently announced tours…
Finally, in the battle for possibly the worst packaged tours of the summer Def Leppard, Cheap Trick and Poison will hit sheds across the country while ’80s AOR acts REO Speedwagon, Styx and .38 Special will team up for a mix of dates at casinos, arenas and amphitheaters. So, if you were forced into hitting one of these craptastic tours, which one would it be?
If I was to dream up a fest this summer consisting of some of the best roots singer/songwriters around, the line up would come pretty darn close to the one that was revealed for the inaugural Saratoga Music Festival. The one day fest to be held at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on August 17 will be headlined by Bob Dylan who will also be joined on the bill by Levon Helm, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, The Swell Season, Conor Oberst & His Mystic Valley Band and Raul Malo. Not too shabby of a day a music, huh?
If a fest featuring some of the best roots musicians around isn’t for you, then maybe one of these recently announced tours will be…
Finally, if the line up for San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival wasn’t good enough, they recently announced a handful of additions to already stellar roster. Joining the likes of Radiohead, Tom Petty and Wilco will be Toots & the Maytals, Rogue Wave, The Walkmen, Mike Gordon, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet feat. Bela Fleck, Vienna Teng, Howlin’ Rain, Everest, The Dynamites and Carney. The fest takes place from August 22 – 24, tickets are on-sale now.
The New York Football Giants shocked the world by pulling off an incredible victory over the heavily favored Patriots in what was one helluva game — it was actually kinda hard to sleep last night in New York City thanks to the roar of the fans celebrating in the streets. Guess you can’t win ‘em, all Boston fans. We rank Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ rapid fire parade of hits atop the non-football highlights, followed by the Prince Caspian commercial and the talking Tide stain.
Let’s see what’s cookin’ as we pretend we don’t have the world’s worst hangover:

Finally, Filter Magazine sent Pat McGuire on the road with Band of Horses to document one of their recent tours of the West Coast. The road journal McGuire came back with features many interesting anecdotes and factoids from the road.
Tea Leaf Green is the jamband scene’s Radiohead. Before you fume with anger at that analogy, we’re only talking about their ability to regularly provide fans with awesome simulcasts of their performances. Now the band is working with iClips to offer three live broadcasts from TLG’s upcoming tour. Check out iClips on February 2nd, 3rd and 16th to see how the San Francisco-based quartet’s music benefits from the recent addition of bass virtuoso Reed Mathis.
As usual here’s a piping-hot batch of linkage to help speed up your Friday morning:
Mike Gordon and Bill Kreutzmann will continue their trend of playing in lush tropical locales on January 5th in Costa Rica. Steve Kimock will be busy sailing the seas on Jam Cruise, so the former members of Phish and the Grateful Dead picked Max Creek’s Scott Murawski to join them on guitar. Kreutzmann first played with Gordon as part of SerialPod in December 2005, while Murawski was a member of the Phish bass player’s solo band in 2003. No word yet on whether Trey and Phil will continue their trend of playing crappy old arenas in New York State.
Now let’s celebrate the end of the week with a batch of linkage:
Billboard runs down the 25 Best Rock Posters of All Time
Finally, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle found humor in three things near and dear to my heart: New Jersey, Asian stoners and those delicious little sliders. The boys are back, and this time they’re fucked. Check out the NSFW trailer for Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, in theaters April 25th.
Ever since Justin Timberlake revealed Janet Jackson’s Nubian Nipple at Super Bowl XXXVIII, the NFL seems to exclusively tab classic rockers to perform during halftime at the Super Bowl as to not repeat that Awakening of Areola. The recent tradition continues, and the NFL yesterday officially announced that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers got the gig at Super Bowl XLII on February 3rd in Phoenix.
Petty grew up in football crazy Gainesville, so we’re pretty sure he’s been to a big game or two. No word yet on whether Petty will dedicate Even The Losers to our woeful Jets, who finally played a good game yesterday. What else we got?
