Friday’s Leftovers: The Musical Disabled List

This edition of Leftovers reads more like an NFL injury report, but rumors were flying yesterday that Led Zeppelin would cancel their upcoming reunion gig. So we were a bit relieved to see that the show will go on albeit two weeks later than originally planned. Guitarist Jimmy Page fractured his finger last week, leading the band to delay the Ahmet Ertegun tribute until December 10th.

Illness has also befallen an unnamed member of The Decemberists, which have just cancelled their fall tour after only two gigs. Rock bands are gonna start hiring trainers if this keeps up. Alright, so what else is out there today?

Finally, I saw The Police on Halloween, and Andy Summers was nowhere near as impressive on guitar as he was when I saw them in August. Summers needs to be on his game for that band to thrive, so perhaps he should put the photography exhibits and documentaries on hold before Sting loses interest.

Vegoose Day One: The More Things Change…

Our intrepid reporter Sleepy Floyd probably can’t feel his face this morning…but he sent in this communication from the Vegoose festival this weekend:

This year’s Vegoose festival surely is different from the two prior incarnations. Sam Boyd Stadium — off the “lovely” Boulder Highway, lying next to a cookie-cutter subdivision that’s infinitely more Phoenix than Las Vegas — is still very much the same. But the lineup and the scene have each evolved in record time.

Vegoose

More closely resembling Lollapalooza than a typical jamband festival, there were more Daft Punk T-shirts than tie-dyes, and Trojan condoms were being passed out instead of free hugs. If a lineup of Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age and Rage Against the Machine weren’t enough to scare the hippies away, try adding Public Enemy, Lupe Fiasco and M.I.A. And if that didn’t do the trick, maybe invite Muse, Ghostface Killah and the biggest anti-hippie of ‘em all: Iggy Pop.

Gogol

Gogol Bordello makes people forget about Big Ten football

Although the “scene” itself has changed, the mission is still the same for the folks at Superfly: throw a ton of music our way at the same time and keep us running between stages. Not a bad way to be spending your afternoon, as long as it keeps you away from the $5-a-slice pizza. I love Spicy Pie? Maybe at $3 a slice I’d love you long time — talk about a markup. So read on after the jump for a recap of the festival and some quality photos from our man on the ground…

Friday’s Leftovers: Iran Into Trouble

Andy Samberg’s Digital Shorts are about the only consistently funny parts of the otherwise lifeless Saturday Night Live program these days. And this past week’s I Ran So Far Away short that stood out among the season opener dreck was set to achieve the same viral video success as predecessors Dick In A Box and Lazy Sunday. But NBC suddenly pulled the video. How come? It turns out the SNL team lifted the melody for I Ran from an obscure Aphex Twin song, and Hitchaser does a nice job of getting into the nitty gritty of why NBC had to bag the short.

While we wait to see what Andy steals this week, let’s check out some links:

And, lastly, The Daily Swarm alerts us that Maryland may not have money to bail out failing hospitals, but they have plenty of money for new music halls.

Briefly: Enjoy Your Summer, Jerks

Written by Ace Cowboy on 10.02.2007 | Arcade Fire, Battles, Bjork, LCD Soundsystem, Rage

Australia’s toilets may or may not flush counterclockwise, but one thing is certain: While we’re freezing our nips off in January and February, the Aussies and Kiwis will be enjoying the traveling summertime festival known as Big Day Out. The initial lineup came out today, and it’s solid to quite solid: Rage Against The Machine, Bjork, Arcade Fire, Battles, LCD Soundsystem, Billy Bragg and many more will play the six-day, six-city festival. Vacation down under, anyone? [More]
