Interlocken Festival: Neil Young, Furthur, Black Crowes

The first lineup announcement from the Interlocken Festival has just been made by our friends at Relix. Put together by H.O.R.D.E. co-founder Dave Frey and Relix publisher Pete Shapiro, the event will take place from September 5 – 8 at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia. Today, we’ve found out that Furthur, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Black Crowes and String Cheese Incident will be among the bands performing at the first of what we hope will be many Interlocken’s. In addition, country-rocker Zac Brown will team up with The String Cheese Incident at the fest.

We’re already digging on the lineup which makes us think of what the top of a 2013 Bonnaroo lineup would look like if organizers kept the focus on jam acts. According to the Interlocken website, “Many of the artists will be performing at Interlocken over multiple days, and will be featured in unique and exciting artist pairings – with additional artists to be announced soon.” With guys like Shapiro and Frey in charge, we know we’re in good hands and can’t wait to see the rest of the lineup and these “exciting artist pairings.”

“Most festivals these days are trying to be everything to everyone — very eclectic with an emphasis on a large number of artists in various genres,” says Shapiro in a statement to Relix. “With Interlocken, we want to break away from that mold and create something more identifiable and distinct.”

Early-bird tickets go on sale May 23rd at 10AM ET.

Cover Alert: Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – The Black Crowes

Written by on 05.09.2013 | Audio, Black Crowes, Bob Dylan

Back on April 21, The Black Crowes presented a guest-laden acoustic performance at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium that turned out to be one for the ages. Included among the many debuts on that fateful evening was the Crowes’ first-ever take on bob Dylan’s Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.

While Crowes front man Chris Robinson had performed the tune with both Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Phil and Friends numerous times in the past, it was a treat to hear The Black Crowes tackle the Highway 61 Revisited classic. We’ve been waiting since the night the show took place for a recording to surface and that day has finally come. Taper Adam R. Parr has shared his recording, though he notes his mics melted down and he had to use the built-in mic on his recorder. So while this recording isn’t of the best quality, it’s still worth it to hear The Crowes and their guests – such as Old Crow Medicine Show and Sam Bush – run through these songs.

Let’s take a listen to The Black Crowes’ cover of Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues…

A fan-shot video of the cover has surfaced…

Black Crowes Welcome Old Crow Medicine Show, Sam Bush, Audley Freed & More @ Acoustic Ryman Show

The Black Crowes promised special guests for their all-acoustic show at the Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night, but no one was expecting nearly a dozen guests to show up for the Nashville finale. Bluegrass legend Sam Bush, former Black Crowes member Audley Freed, Chuck Mead of BR549 and ALL of Old Crow Medicine Show were just a few of the musicians on hand to sit in with The Black Crowes.

The first guest to come out last night was mandolinist Sam Bush, who sat in with The Crowes on a total of seven songs including rarities My Heart’s Killing Me, Garden Gate and Deep River Blues (Doc Watson). Bush was also on hand when the evening’s second guest – Audley Freed – who played lead guitar with the late ’90s and early ’00s version of The Black Crowes, joined his old mates. Freed came out early in the show for a Rich Robinson-sung take on Feelin’ Alright and returned for the final song of the evening – Boomer’s Story. Jackie Greene showed off his versatility during the acoustic performance by playing banjo on Whoa Mule and Garden Gate.

One of the evening’s biggest bust outs came towards the middle of the set when the Crowes dusted off a cover of Gram Parsons’ Cash On The Barrelhead with the help of Bush and Chuck Mead of BR549. Both Robinson Brothers had a solo turn during the show as Rich sang All Along The Way from his 2011 solo album, while Chris tackled Someday Past The Sunset from the Chris Robinson Brotherhood’s The Magic Door LP by his lonesome. Then, all the members of the Old Crow Medicine Show guested with The Black Crowes for a lengthy “Double Crow(e)s” segment that featured covers of East Virginia Blues (The Carter Family), Oh The Rain (Blind Willie Johnson) and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (The Band). Other guests included a pair of female vocalists and a percussionist, while another cover debut came in the form of Bob Dylan’s Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.

Peter Frampton Sits In With The Black Crowes In Nashville

Written by on 04.21.2013 | Black Crowes, News, Peter Frampton, Videos

The Black Crowes kicked off a two-night stand at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville last night and brought out a special guest with them. Saturday’s show was an all-electric rocker as opposed to tonight’s gig which is the Crowes’ only announced all-acoustic performance. Ironically, tonight’s show is billed as “with Special Guests,” but that didn’t stop the band from welcoming legendary guitarist Peter Frampton out to jam with them on a four-song string towards the end of their set.

Frampton first sat in with The Black Crowes on a cover of Medicated Goo by Traffic. While there was no talk box to be found, Frampton did duel with Rich Robinson on Thorn In My Pride and helped out on the Before The Frost…Until The Freeze track Appaloosa. The finale of the Peter Frampton/Black Crowes summit was the Crowes’ debut of Natural Born Bugie from Peter’s time with Humble Pie. Natural Born Bugie was Humble Pie’s debut single when it was released in 1969.

Set: Jealous Again, Thick N Thin, Hotel Illness, My Morning Song > Stare It Cold > My Morning Song, Ballad In Urgency, Wiser Time, She Talks To Angels, Medicated Goo*, Thorn In My Pride*, Appaloosa*, Natural Born Boogie*, Remedy, Hard To Handle / Hush

Encore: Descending > Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Happy

* – w/ Peter Frampton

Crowes fans were in for an additional treat in the encore. After running through the Descending > Jumpin’ Jack Flash segment they debuted last week in Chicago, The Black Crowes dusted off their version of Happy by The Rolling Stones.

We came across a few fan-shot clips of Peter Frampton sitting in with The Black Crowes…

HT faves The Black Crowes’ Lay Down With Number 13 tour rolls on to Chicago tonight. On Friday night the group performed at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, where they delivered a three-song encore that included a cover of Oh! Sweet Nuthin’ by The Velvet Underground.

Rich Robinson handles vocals on the cover, and in this version lays down a particularly tasty guitar solo. Take a look at the Crowes’ take on Oh! Sweet Nuthin’ from Friday night in Philly…

Video: The Black Crowes – Wiser Time @ Capitol Theatre

Written by on 04.04.2013 | Black Crowes, Videos

HT faves The Black Crowes kicked off the first American leg of the Lay Down With Number 13 Tour the past two nights at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The sextet treated fans to tour debuts of Sting Me and Feathers on Tuesday, while last night’s show didn’t feature any. Among the four songs that The Crowes have played at all seven shows is their 1995 single Wiser Time.

Since its debut Wiser Time has been used by the band as a showcase for its soloists. This tour’s versions have exceeded the 15-minute mark thanks in part to the dynamic work of the newest Black Crowe – Jackie Greene. But in this Wiser Time from Tuesday’s show at The Cap, we’re most impressed with Rich Robinson’s ferocious solo and the finale in which both guitarists shred simultaneously.

Check out this video in which Wiser Time starts at the one-minute mark…

Jackie Greene Impresses as Black Crowes Lead Guitarist

Written by on 03.27.2013 | Audio, Black Crowes, Jackie Greene, News, Videos

UPDATE 6:45PM ET: We came across of a video of the tour debut of Space Captain and added it.

We weren’t the only ones surprised to see The Black Crowes bring on Jackie Greene to fill the lead guitar role that Marc Ford, Paul Stacey and Luther Dickinson handled since 2005 for their new tour which kicked off on Sunday in England. Greene is more known for his singing voice, supporting work and versatility than for his ability to shred. However after listening to a handful of tracks from Sunday and a few videos from Monday, we’ve been very impressed with Greene’s contributions.

Not only does Greene add another dimension with his mandolin playing, but he’s delivered crushing guitar solos in lead-heavy songs such as Jealous Again, Wiser Time and Morning Song. Don’t take our word for it, here’s audio and video of the aforementioned tracks to see if you agree…

The Black Crowes Stick To Similar Script at Show #2 of Tour

Written by on 03.26.2013 | Black Crowes, News

As previously reported, The Black Crowes returned to the stage after a nearly two year hiatus on Sunday night in Manchester, England. The band is currently working in new member Jackie Greene, so it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that they didn’t mix up the setlist too much for their second show back, which took place last night at The Academy in Birmingham, England.

Chris and Rich Robinson and Co. offered five songs on Monday that they didn’t perform at the tour opener on Sunday: Ballad in Urgency and She Gave Good Sunflower from 1994′s Amorica, Appaloosa and Been a Long Time (Waiting on Love) from 2009′s Before the Frost…Until the Freeze and a cover of Delaney & Bonnie’s Poor Elijah – Tribute to Robert Johnson Medley. The sextet even kept most of the pacing the same between first two shows of the Lay Down With Number 13 Tour. For example, the same four songs opened both gigs. Hopefully by the time they hit the states they’ll mix it up more.

Here’s the setlist from Birmingham with tour debuts in bold

Set: Jealous Again, Thick N Thin, Hotel Illness, Medicated Goo, Ballad in Urgency, Wiser Time, She Talks to Angels, Appaloosa, Whoa Mule, Morning Song, Hi Head Blues, She Gave Good Sunflower, Soul Singing, Thorn in My Pride, Remedy, Hard to Handle/Hush

Encores: Poor Elijah/Robert Johnson, Been a Long Time

[Setlist via The Black Crowes' Twitter]

The Black Crowes tour continues tomorrow night in Glasgow, Scotland.

Cover Alert: Black Crowes – Medicated Goo (Traffic)

Written by on 03.25.2013 | Audio, Black Crowes, Cover Alert, Traffic

After a hiatus of nearly two years, The Black Crowes returned to the stage last night in Manchester, England. The group, which now features multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene, turned in a 2:20 set that focused on their best-known songs from throughout their career. Here’s the setlist…

[via Black Crowes Facebook Page]

Mixed among the many originals The Black Crowes played last night were a handful of covers, two of which were debuts. The band worked Joe South’s Hush into Hard To Handle during the encore and unleashed their version of Medicated Goo by Traffic towards the beginning of the show. Medicated Goo was originally released by Traffic as a single in 1968 and subsequently appeared on the group’s Last Exit album in 1969 in the middle of a period where the band had broken up.

An audience recording of last night’s show has surfaced allowing us to hear TBC’s version of Medicated Goo. Black Crowes guitarists Jackie Greene and Rich Robinson work brilliantly off each other during the intro and the solo section towards the end of the tune. Take a listen and see if you agree…
