Bloggy Goodness: Dave Grohl, Blues Traveler, Jakob Dylan & More on Marc Maron’s WTF with Marc Maron Podcast

We’re big fans of Marc Maron’s fantastic podcast WTF with Marc Maron around these parts. The comedian turned talk show host, has built his reputation around his very personal narrative, self-deprecating and self-analyzing humor, that often times involves stories about his cats, love life and past struggles in the comedy business. Maron’s podcasts typically feature interviews with comedians and actors, but over the last few weeks Marc has invited a number of musicians to stop by for some highly entertaining chats that we wanted to recommend. Marc’s recent episodes with Blues TravelerJakob Dylan and Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), all feature some great stories that are well worth blocking out some time to sit down and listen to. Today, Maron uploaded his most recent episode which features an interview with Dave Grohl, which we’re sure is a must-listen as well.

Since opening the doors of his Third Man Records store in Nashville back in 2009, Jack White has made vinyl lovers drool with innovative releases. Earlier this week White revealed the latest project from his label, as Third Man is teaming up with the fine folks at Document Records for a new reissue series that will document the complete recorded works in chronological order of an artist. Volume one of this series is set to feature the earliest works of revered blues artists Charley Patton, Blind Willie McTell and the Mississippi Sheiks. Here’s some more info via Third Man Records…

Bloggy Goodness: Pete Shapiro Buys The Cap

A little over a year ago we reported that after not hosting rock shows for well over a decade, Pete Shapiro had struck a long-term deal with the Capitol Theatre to bring music back to the legendary rock palace. Shapiro reportedly spent $2 million to lovingly restore and renovate the historic venue, which since reopening back in September has garnered rave reviews from concert goers. Earlier this week Shapiro upped his venue portfolio, as according to the New York Times the concert impresario went from renter to owner when he finalized a deal to pay $11.5 million to buy the Cap from its previous owner Marvin Ravikoff.

Finally, while we’re happy to see that Mr. Shapiro will have the Cap under his guidance for the long-term, we are conversely sad to report that The Living Room will be forced to close its doors at the end of the month when their lease expires citing the rising cost of their rent as the culprit. The pass-the-hat venue on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, which famously helped break Norah Jones in the early aughts, first opened in 1988 at a small space on the corner of Stanton and Allen Street, eventually moving to their current location at 154 Ludlow Street roughly a decade ago. The venue owners are promising to reopen at a new space next spring, and are currently asking for help to off-set the relocation costs via a crowd-source campaign using PledgeMusic. The Living Room will mark the final weeks at its current location with a week-long celebration from January 20 – 26, which is expected to feature a number of the venue’s alumni.

The 2013 edition of the event will take place on July 25 – 28. Early-bird tickets for the four-day festival are currently on-sale now in a variety of formats.

Finally, our friends at Boing Boing posted this crazy clip of John Lennon teaming up with Chuck Berry for a version of Memphis, Tennessee on The Mike Douglas Show in 1972. Our favorite part has to be Berry’s bemused look when Yoko Ono stars screaming. Check it out…

Bloggy Goodness: Funky Meters New Year’s @ Capitol Theatre

When the initial schedule for the first few months of concerts at the newly-reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York was announced the Steve Miller Band was set to play there on New Year’s Eve. Apparently there’s been a change in plans as that show has been cancelled and been replaced by a funkier option. The Funky Meters will headline The Cap on New Year’s Eve with Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk set to open. Tickets will run $90 and $45 and will go on sale soon. And of course this news comes out just minutes after we posted our 2012-2013 New Year’s Eve Concert Guide.

When your band already has a channel solely dedicated to them on SiriusXM it’s probably easy to arrange hosting your own show on it. Yesterday on Pearl Jam Radio, PJ lead singer Eddie Vedder did just that, when he premiered the very appropriately titled The Eddie Vedder Radio Show. The limited run show will feature Vedder’s “favorite songs, from early punk rock influences to unreleased material from his personal archives,” as well as “personal stories about his career in rock music.”

Written by on 11.29.2012 | Bloggy Goodness, Foo Fighters

During their appearance at September’s Global Citizens Festival, Dave Grohl announced from the stage that it was going to be the Foo Fighters last gig for awhile, as they were headed into an extended hiatus after touring the globe in support of their 2011 release Wasting Light. Bloggy Goodness: Dogfish Head’s American Beauty Beer

Over the last few years the brewers at Dogfish Head have rolled out a handful of their “uniquely off-centered ales” that have had a direct correlation to the music world, honoring Miles Davis, Robert Johnson and Pearl Jam with their own signature beers. For their latest crossover, the Delaware-based brewery is teaming up with the folks at Grateful Dead Productions for their latest collaboration, which will be called American Beauty. The beer, which is still in the development phase, will be a strong pale ale with all-American hops and barley, but they are reaching out to fans of both the band and the brewery for help in choosing a special final ingredient, and asking for their the Dead-inspired story behind it. The brewers at Dogfish Head will be accepting suggestions online starting in December, with a joint panel set to select the ingredient they feel works best in the context of a strong pale ale recipe. American Beauty is set to hit taps and shelves in October of 2013, we can’t wait to try it!

Finally, in what seems like a sure fire sign of the apocalypse, CBS has inked a deal with The Big Bang Theory’s writer/co-executive producer Dave Goetsch to produce a multi-camera family sitcom to be called Smells Like Teen Spirit. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show “revolves around an 18-year-old budding entrepreneur who forgoes Harvard and instead opts to launch a multibillion-dollar Internet company from his garage with the assistance of his sister, best friend and his 1990s indie-rock parents.” Somewhere, Kurt Cobain is crafting a t-shirt that reads “Corporate Sitcoms Still Suck.”

Bloggy Goodness: Professor ?uestlove

If he wasn’t busy enough with his many gigs, ?uestlove is going to now have to find time to grade papers, as The Roots drummer has revealed that he will be teaming up with Universal Music Enterprises vice president Harry Weinger to teach a course titled Classic Albums, next semester at the Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. According to Billboard, the two credit course, “will focus on the concept of what it means for something to be called classic or seminal, as well as take a close look at the music, lyrics, production, business aspects — such as promotion and marketing — that informed the release and reception of the album, and try to provide a context as to why these albums have stood time.” Albums expected to be covered will include Sly & The Family Stone’s Stand!, Aretha Franklin’s Lady Soul, Led Zeppelin’s IV, Prince’s Dirty Minds and the Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique.

Finally, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame will celebrate one of the pioneers of the genre, as they will honor Chuck Berry with a new exhibit Roll Over Beethoven: The Life and Music of Chuck Berry, and a week long celebration of his career culminating with an all-star tribute concert at the State Theater in Cleveland. Opening today, which also happens to be the legendary guitar player’s 86th birthday, the multimedia exhibit will include Berry’s 1958 recording contract with Chess Records, a vest he wore at the Toronto Rock and Roll Festival in 1969 and a handbill from a 1961 show in Jamaica.

Bloggy Goodness: Governors Ball To Return In 2013

While music festivals have seemingly flourished in other parts of the country, the New York City area has as struggled mightily to have a signature one of their own. While we’ve seen the likes of Field Day, All Points West and the idea for a Bonnaroo NE all head to the festival graveyard, it seems like New Yorkers have finally fully embraced one as organizers behind the Governors Ball Music Festival have announced that the event will be returning for its third year in 2013. The multi-day fest, which this past year featured the likes of Beck, Fiona Apple, Explosions In The Sky and Built To Spill, will return to Randall’s Island and take place on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9. Pre-sale ticketing information will be announced in the coming weeks, while the initial line up will be revealed in February.

You might have noticed by now that we’ve been quite enthusiastic about the reopening of the Capitol Theatre which is finally hosting rock shows after 15 years of dormancy. If you’ve been eyeing the Port Chester, New York venue’s stellar lineup of shows for the perfect opportunity to go check out the refurbished theater, we’d like to point out that on this Friday, September 21, you can procure tickets to any upcoming show at The Cap without paying ticketing vendor TicketFly a service fee.

Bloggy Goodness: Bowery Presents, The Sinclair

Bowery Presents continue to stretch their reach outside of their home base in New York City, as next month the concert promoters will open their second venue in Boston – The Sinclair. The 525-person venue, located in Harvard Square in the Cambridge area of Beantown, will take a page from their sister venue Brooklyn Bowl by also featuring a 104-seat restaurant “helmed by one of the country’s top chefs, James Beard Award–winner Michael Schlow.” The club will officially open on Tuesday, October 30, with a gig from The Meter Men with Page McConnell, and currently have shows scheduled with K’NAAN, psych-rock legend Roky Erickson, folk-rockers David Wax Museum and more.

Finally, Light In The Attic first caught our attention back in 2008, when the Seattle-based label reissued the fantastic lost debut from Rodriguez. The label, who has built a reputation on re-releasing similar lost albums, reissuing hard-to-find and out-of-prints records and putting out compilations, will celebrate their 10th Anniversary with a two pack of concerts – the first at El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles (9/28) and the second at The Showbox (10/12) in their hometown that will both feature LTA artists: Rodriguez, Michael Chapman, and Donnie & Joe Emerson. Prior to the concerts, the label has announced that they will hit the road on a 2,500 mile road trip up and down the West Coast, where they will visit 58 record stores over the course of 12 days – and they want you to join them. If you’d like a spot in the van, simply email roadtrip@lightintheattic.net and tell them why you deserve to be chosen to join them. The winner will be announced on September 17th, 2012 at the Light In The Attic blog.

Bloggy Goodness: Rolling Stones Documentaries

It’s been a big 24 hours for Rolling Stones fans, as late last night we dropped the news that the band will indeed celebrate their 50th anniversary with a handful of concerts in London and Brooklyn this November. Now comes even more news about the iconic band, as they will be the subject of not one but two documentaries celebrating their legacy this fall. On November 15, HBO will debut the Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture/Chicago 10) directed Crossfire Hurricane, which “chronicles their early years and their rise to stardom.”

While on September 29, the New York Film Festival will feature the debut of The Rolling Stones: Charlie is My Darling – Ireland 1965, which was shot shortly before (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction became a #1 hit and according to Vintage Vinyl News contains never before seen footage of “the band traveling through the Irish countryside by train; dashing from cabs to cramped, basement dressing rooms through screaming hordes of fans.”

Finally, while everything appears to be coming up roses for Stones fans, it’s been a frustrating few months of Van Halen fans, as classic rock act continues to cancel more dates due to unforeseen circumstances. Yesterday the band announced that they would be postponing their upcoming tour of Japan as guitarist Eddie Van Halen had to undergo emergency surgery for a severe bout of diverticulitis – a digestive disease that occurs when pouches of the inner lining of the intestine become inflamed or infected, which will require four to six months of recovery time. We want to wish EVH a quick and speedy recovery, and hope to see the band back on the road in 2013.
