Weir’d End To Furthur’s Cap Run: Bob Weir Unable To Perform

Written by on 04.26.2013 | Bob Weir, Furthur, News, Videos

Sad news from The Capitol Theatre last night as Furthur guitarist Bob Weir was helped off the stage in the middle of the band’s second set during the final show of the band’s nine-show residency. Weir seemed to be off all night, both vocally and on guitar, which culminated in a scary scene during Unbroken Chain. The 65-year-old Weir fell on stage and was helped into a folding chair that was set up for him by two of Furthur’s crew. He strummed aimlessly throughout the rest of Unbroken Chain, after which the band left the stage only to return a few minutes later sans Weir.

Phil Lesh advised the crowd that Weir hurt his shoulder earlier in the day, garnering hoots of in-credulousness. Lesh and his band mates went on to finish the second set without Bobby.

Here’s video of Unbroken Chain…

Furthur’s next show is on Saturday night in Atlantic City. There’s no word on Weir’s condition. We’ve been blown away by how hard Weir and Lesh have been working in past years both with Furthur and with their new Bay Area venues. We wish Bobby the best and hope he’ll be able to play in AC.

Bloggy Goodness: Weir Here Hits The Road

We’ve been big fans of Bob Weir’s fantastic Weir Here since it debuted last year. The semi-regular web variety show, which is broadcast live from Weir’s TRI Studios, has featured members of the Grateful Dead and its extended family swapping stories and performing a mix of tunes. During a recent episode, the former Bobby & The Midnights lead singer revealed that he will take the show on the road this fall, where he will be joined by Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jonathan Wilson, Jay Lane (Primus), Jason Crosby and Jeff Chimenti (Furthur, RatDog), as well former Dead crew member Steve Parish. According to Jambands.com the tour is currently scheduled to make stops at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York, Philadelphia’s Tower Theater, Richmond, Virginia’s The National, San Rafael, California’s Terrapin Crossroads and Mill Valley, California’s Sweetwater.

Finally, it’s been roughly two years since The National dropped the news that they would be curating a Grateful Dead covers record for the AIDS charity Red Hot. While we still await some sort of update on that project, the band is seemingly taking a page out of the legendary psychedelic rock act’s Acid Test days, as on May 5 the Brooklyn-based act will play one song for six straight hours at the finale of MoMA PS1′s Sunday Sessions. The band will perform the High Violet track Sorrow as part of Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansso exhibit – A Lot of Sorrow. Tickets for the one-time only performance, which explores “potential of repetitive performance to produce sculptural presence within sound,” are currently on-sale for $15.

Bob Weir and John Kadlecik Cover Dead and Allmans With Jay Lane, Aaron Maxwell, Kenny Brooks and Friends Post-Furthur

Written by on 04.18.2013 | Bob Weir, Furthur, God Street Wine

Furthur has been holding court at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York since Monday night as the band is in the midst of a nine-show residency at the venue. Former Furthur member, and current Primus drummer, Jay Lane has a residency of his own nearby at the Copacabana restaurant in Port Chester during the run for a series of aftershows dubbed “CapToTheCopa.”

Promoters promised plenty of surprise guests at the CapToTheCopa series and a few showed up last night when Furthur’s John Kadlecik and Bob Weir stopped by to perform with Jay Lane and Friends. Weir and Kadlecik joined God Street Wine guitarist Aaron Maxwell, Jay Lane, Kenny Brooks, Lizzy Friel, Paul Kates and Josh Kates for renditions of Bird Song and Sugaree by The Grateful Dead as well as One Way Out by the Allman Brothers Band. Kadlecik stuck around for China Doll and a cover of Cissy Strut.

As for Furthur, here’s a look at what they played last night…

Bob Weir, Jerry Harrison, Jason Crosby and Leslie Mendelson Sit In With Steve Kimock and Friends in San Francisco

Steve Kimock was slated to play the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco last night with his current band which includes Andy Hess on bass, keyboardist Bernie Worrell and drummer Wally Ingram. Knowing Kimock’s close relationship with Furthur / Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir it wasn’t a stretch to think the jorts-loving Weir would show, especially since Steve took part in Bobby’s Weir Here talk show at TRI Studios on Wednesday night. Not only did Bobby show up, but he brought his new comrades Leslie Mendelson and Jason Crosby with him. As if that wasn’t enough, Worrell’s former Talking Heads band mate Jerry Harrison sat in on a tune during the first set.

The guest-laden show featured multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby throughout. Harrison emerged during the first set for a cover of Al Green’s Take Me To The River, which was a staple of Talking Heads’ live shows. Weir and Mendelson came out at the start of the second set to join Crosby, Kimock, Worrell, Ingram and Hess. During the second set Leslie sang To Love Somebody, Weir led the ensemble through Willie Dixon’s Little Red Rooster and Grateful Dead staples New Speedway Boogie and I Know You Rider, while Worrell sang a rendition of Burning Down The House. Weir, Mendelson and Crosby stuck around for an encore of a song that has made Bobby’s rotation as of late – a cover of Delbert McClinton’s Standing On Shaky Ground. Here’s a video of Little Red Rooster from last night…

Phil Lesh Visits TRI Studios For Memorable Weir Here

Phil Lesh made his first appearance on Bob Weir’s Weir Here talk show one to remember last night at TRI Studios. Lesh emerged halfway through a version of Sugar Magnolia featuring Weir on acoustic guitar that kicked off the show and stuck around for nearly an hour and a half of the two hour show before departing for his own venue.

Following Sugar Magnolia, the Grateful Dead / Furthur band mates offered impressive duo versions of Cosmic Charlie and Loose Lucy before bringing out multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby for a passionate take on Jack Straw. Then, Weir headed over to his desk, which is the same style as other talk show hosts like Jay Leno and David Letterman, where he was joined by Lesh, Grateful Dead roadie Steve Parish and the Dead’s legacy manager David Lemieux for an incredibly engaging storytelling session about the late Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. It’s not often we get to see Weir and Lesh just trading tales and they both seemed to hold nothing back frankly discussing drug and alcohol usage.

Bob Weir Storms Off Stage Mid-Song @ Sweetwater

Written by on 03.05.2013 | Bob Weir, News, RatDog

Last night was the second of two The RatDog Quartet performances at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, Calif. Before this new version of RatDog took the stage, which features Bob Weir, Jonathan Wilson, Robin Sylvester, Jay Lane and sometimes guest Jason Crosby, the evening started off with an acoustic performance by Jonathan Wilson followed by a Bob Weir acoustic set. Weir battled with a bunch of talkers throughout his set telling them “Hey, I’m not interrupting you am I?” He finally gave up during a cover of Bob Dylan’s A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall. Bobby left the stage in the middle of the song after issuing an evil glare and telling the crowd he’d be back with his electric band.

When Weir returned with his RatDog Quartet in tow, he told the crowd “It’s okay, we’re not going to try to do anything particularly delicate now,” before launching into Friend of the Devil. The RatDog Quartet set included the first RatDog version of Fire On The Mountain which was sung by Jonathan Wilson. Wilson also sang on a cover of Sing Me Back Home, another RatDog debut. Jason Crosby, who sat in with Weir during his acoustic set, guested with RatDog for the majority of the set.

Watch Bobby’s performance of Hard Rain followed by the walk off…

Video: Weir Here – Bob Weir, Sammy Hagar, Lukas Nelson, Jerry Harrison, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester

Bob Weir continued his Weir Here performance / Q&A series last night via a live webcast originating from his TRI Studios facility in the Bay Area last night. For this ninth installment of Weir Here, the Furthur / Grateful Dead guitarist was joined by a cast of characters that included Talking Heads / Modern Lovers  keyboardist/guitarist Jerry Harrison, former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar, singer/songwriter Lukas Nelson and RatDog rhythm section Robin Sylvester and Jay Lane.

Hagar, Weir’s longtime friend and neighbor, started things off by fronting the assembled musicians on Loose Lucy and Mustang Sally and backed up Nelson on JJ Cale’s Call Me The Breeze. Lukas then offered up his novelty song I’m Stuck with a Boner on a Bus Full of Guys before giving way to Harrison for a rollicking version of Life During Wartime. Bobby and Lukas shared lead vocals on a cover of Come Together by The Beatles which was followed the a pair of GD classics – Friend of the Devil and Althea. The group then tipped its cap to the other legendary act Harrison was a part of – Modern Lovers – by tackling She Cracked. For the finale, Weir led the ensemble through I Know You Rider.
