Brothers Past @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, February 5

Words: Carla Danca

Despite an intimate start to the show, the diehards all came out to support Brothers Past at Williamsburg’s Hall of Music this past Saturday. From the bros in the front row who embodied the “dance like no one is watching” mantra to the Funtown dancers on the stage, the floor kept moving all night long in Brooklyn. While it may have been cold and raining outside,  inside things got so hot that there was more than one shirt removed.

The show began with a set from New Jersey’s own FiKus who were crowded together among the equipment of BP. The tight set up seemed the aid the band as their playing intermixed seamlessly.  By adding additional electronic layers on top of the already rich sound provided, the five members of the band dominated the room.  Things heated up when DJ Nutritious spun while his two dancers roamed the stage with painted body art that accentuated every curve. Though it seemed a bit risqué, they didn’t quite know what to do when a dollar was thrown on stage… apparently it wasn’t that kind of party after all.

Wednesday Intermezzo: Happy Birthday Phish

Back on December 2, 1983, Phish played their first gig for an unappreciative crowd at the Harris-Millis Cafeteria on the campus of the University of Vermont. Tonight, the band celebrates their 26th anniversary at Madison Square Garden. A few intrepid fans on Phantasy Tour are asking fans to sing Happy Birthday to the band as soon as the lights go down.

Here’s a quick look at what else is happening this week…

Finally, Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits and Tom Hamilton of Brother’s Past/American Babies are resurrecting an old traditional in which they dig through each other’s catalogs – as well as a few fun covers -  for a night of acoustic entertainment. This year’s Holiday Special takes place at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia on December 23. Tickets are available now for $15.

CW: Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Everybody Wants To Rule The World was a chart-topping single off the 1985 Tears For Fears album Songs From The Big Chair.

Cover Wars

According to Roland Orzabal, Everybody Wants To Rule The World was written and recorded in two weeks and was the last cut to make the album. Good thing they got it in there.

The Contestants:

The Bad Plus: The Bad Plus show up a lot on Cover Wars, often leading off (because we use alphabetical order) and easing us in with instrumental renditions. This is the second song to be included in a Cover Wars from their 2007 album Prog (see also Life On Mars Cover Wars) Source: Prog

Review: Disco Biscuits / Lotus / Brothers Past

It’s summer time and most bands are hitting up outdoor sheds and festivals, but the Disco Biscuits have always done things a little different. Just a few weeks before the start of Camp Bisco VIII, the boys did a quick “dirty beach” run, up the coast of Delaware and into Atlantic City for a 2 night run at the House of Blues. While Bisco kidz always seem to be the butt of jokes in the scene, AC didn’t even flinch at the invasion of the raging flat brims.

Brothers Past kicked off both nights at the HOB, at least for those of us who were able to pull away from the casino floor. As someone who has really enjoyed BP before, I was a little disappointed with the room sound’s effect on the experience; the sound mix was really heavy on the bass and a bit muddy near the front of the stage.

The HOB has a large floor downstairs that is almost entirely covered by a seated area. Fortunately, night 2 is already posted on the LMA and the recording sounds great! It is a lot clearer than it sounded at the show, and you can actually hear the vocals. My highlights were the cover of Radiohead’s National Anthem and their own Simple Gift of Man to close the set. I think that these guys have so much potential, as they are definitely breaking out of the jam band and livetronic mold.

Cover Wars: Radiohead Edition

Checking on last week’s edition, we had two popular choices for covers of Bell Bottom Blues. Once the votes were counted, Trey Anastasio had a slight edge over Umphrey’s McGee – so Trey takes home his first Cover Wars trophy sans Phish.

Radiohead

This week we’re taking on one of the most ambitious Cover Wars to date. We’ve compiled the most entries we’ve ever had as we take a look at covers of Radiohead’s catalog. Musicians in the 21st century seem to be more reluctant to cover other modern artists than bands were say 30-50 years ago. However, a few artists can be influential enough that bands just can’t help themselves. We saw a little bit of this in the Nirvana Cover Wars as jambands, jazz acts and pop artists paid tribute to the grunge era. We have a similar cross-section of artists this week as well, the contemporary jazz guys love Radiohead.

As always, be sure to register/login to IMEEM so the playlist below loads full-length tracks.

Be sure to READ ON after the jump as some of the best covers this week are embedded via video clips and are not included in the playlist above.

Cover Wars: Houses of the Holy Edition

I’m not sure how the Mr. Blotto fans get the word around, but they sure know how to dominate some Cover Wars and they are the winner of last week’s Pinball Wizard edition.

After ten weeks of writing Cover Wars, I think it is time for a change in format. Previously, we’ve been putting up multiple versions of the same song for comparison. What I’m going to do for the next ten weeks is pick an album and select different artists for each track. This week’s selection will be Led Zeppelin’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy.

You will need to register/login to Imeem to hear these tracks in their entirety:

The Song Remains The Same
(Umphrey’s McGee): Since UM first performed this in 2002, it has been a staple in their extensive cover repertoire. Check out the whole show on The Archive.
