Review: Camp Bisco 11 @ Indian Lookout Country Club

Camp Bisco 11 @ Indian Lookout Country Club, July 12th-14th

Words: Carla Danca

Camp Bisco 11 began late Wednesday night, earlier than ever and started what might be one of the most improved festivals in recent memory. The band might not be playing many shows these days and have shown no intention of going back to touring full-time, but they sure do know how to throw a party. After years of extraordinarily long lines, the improvements needed to make Indian Lookout Country Club work for large crowds were implemented.

Unfortunately for those without parking passes, limited onsite parking as well as the off-site box office with shuttles helped to increase camping to accommodate the ever-growing event. Despite a tragic accident that occurred on Wednesday morning, safety was also improved by building segregated roads for emergency vehicles giving staff easy access to the fields. Part of this plan also included a very segregated VIP and back of house which led to different experiences depending on your ticket. The exclusive late night sets and the new entry, which made entering the site even easier, helped make the expensive ticket a must have for many and sold out well before the event.

While the Disco Biscuits’ sets started off a bit rocky, Saturday’s performances were enjoyable not only the fans, but for the band as well. As the crowd was getting down to old school songs like Mulberry’s Dream the band was looking just as happy to be there. The second set also saw a sit in from Big Gigantic’s Dominic Lalli on Spaga, while the sax star also played later that night with Conspirator in the VIP tent. The final set ended with high fives and hugs between the members, which was reassuring after a disjointed Road to Camp.

Camp Bisco Preview: A Discussion w/ MCP’s Kevin Earle

Words: Carla Danca

With only two weeks until the gates open at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York for Camp Bisco XI we took the opportunity to ask a few questions of festival organizer Meat Camp Production’s Kevin Earle. As you can see below, we were really intereste in understanding more about where the festival has come from and where it might be headed.

HIDDEN TRACK:  Over the past 11 years, there has been huge growth in the Electronic Dance Music scene and Camp Bisco has nurtured and grown along with it. The festival has also gotten mainstream attention from the Bob Lefsetz, the New York Times, and even 20/20, yet there are many who feel that the festival has moved away from its roots as a place for Disco Biscuits fans to gather. How do you balance the desires of the fans that have been coming since the beginning, while drawing in new attendees? Furthermore, the New York area has also seen an influx of other multi-day music events, does this put even more pressure on Camp to separate itself from the competition?

Kevin Earle:  The Disco Biscuits created the event in 1999 as a way to blend the traditional daytime music festival with the late night dance music culture that was becoming big around that time. We still use this formula as we [MCP Presents] book the festival. True, electronic music is on the rise and more and more music is shifting to that side of the fence, but we always try to keep our long term fans in mind and bring in acts that have been there from the beginning each year (Brother’s Past, Lotus, Sound Tribe, Umphrey’s McGee, Orchard Lounge, etc). Camp Bisco’s balance is naturally shifting towards electronic music because that is the way music is shifting as a whole, even the bands that we bring have electronic influences – LCD SoundSystem, Yeasayer, Cut Copy, Crystal Castles, etc. – because it’s what the fans want to see. We always listen to what the fans want, but it’s hard to please everyone.

Camp Bisco X: The Aftermath

Written by on 08.04.2011 | Camp Bisco, Videos

How do you capture the energy and vibe of a festival in five minutes or less? Impossible, you say? Well this clip giving an overview of Camp Bisco X might make you think differently…

YouTube Preview Image

Camp Bisco X – The Aftermath

Quite a few things to note from the above. First off, the impressively produced and edited clip shows just how far Camp Bisco has come since its humble beginnings in 1999 to this year’s sold out affair. Also, it’s interesting to see how little the event’s host, the Disco Biscuits, are shown in the video. While Camp Bisco has always been a multi-band festival, with each passing year the other bookings get bigger and bigger. Finally, kudos to event organizers for finally bridging the gender gap usually found within our scene. There’s more action in this video then in most late-night movies on Cinemax. We highly recommend watching in hi-def for the uh…talent.

Picture Show: Camp Bisco Ten

Written by on 07.21.2011 | Camp Bisco, Festivals, Photos

The biggest Camp Bisco yet took place at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY on July 7 – 9. For the tenth installment of the fest, organizers supplemented headlining sets by the Disco Biscuits with an electronica-heavy lineup that also dipped its toes in the rap, rock and indie worlds.

[All photos by Sebastien Barre]

While unfortunately a series of “technical difficulties” prevented us from giving this fest the full coverage it deserved, we do have a killer photo set from Saturday’s action provided by Sebastien Barre that paints a picture of how things went down at the ILCC featuring the likes of the event’s host – the Disco Biscuits, rapper Wiz Khalifa, DJs MartyParty, Jillionaire and Bassnectar as well as Death From Above 1979, Lettuce, Yeasayer and Neon Indian.

Camp Bisco Ten Sells Out

Written by on 07.08.2011 | Camp Bisco, Disco Biscuits, Festivals

If it seems like the Disco Biscuits’ Camp Bisco festivals have grown in size and stature each year, that’s because they have. This year, the promoters have announced that Camp Bisco Ten has sold out. Anyone heading to the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY without a ticket will be turned away. According to the event’s publicist, Chad Shearer, “Camp Bisco has shown positive growth in each of the 10 years it has been in existence.”

Also of note from Camp Bisco Ten, the Disco Biscuits surprised their fans by making Otherwise Law Abiding Citizens, their sixth studio album, available for purchase at the event. Those of us who aren’t at CB10 can download the album next week from iTunes. Here’s a look at last night’s tDB setlist…

Set 1: Plan B, Helicopters > Spacebirdmatingcall, The Very Moon > Spraypaint > Helicopters, Mulberry’s Dream, Home Again

[via PT Bisco]

However not all the news from Mariaville is good as local residents have complained about the traffic, trash and noise coming from the event to local TV station WNYT. Apparently they aren’t happy with CB10′s growth. Tune in to Sirius/XM’s Jam_ON radio for broadcasts from Camp Bisco 10.

Camp Bisco 10 Dates Announced

Written by on 12.16.2010 | Camp Bisco, Disco Biscuits, Festivals

As my final tan lines from 2010 are finally fading, it’s exciting to see that it’s never too soon to start planning for Summer ’11. Today, we found out that Camp Bisco 10 will again take place at Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, NY on July 7 – 9, 2011. Over 70 international acts will be showcased and even more excitement is in store for festival goers.

With many improvements to the layout last year, it seemed that the wait to get on site was the only remaining issue at ILCC, however this year a second entrance point will be added to decrease wait times and alleviate traffic problems. There will also be more late night options with increased capacity in the silent disco and a second late night dance tent added. Camp Bisco is known for being the festival that never sleeps and it seems that this year they will be back for their tenth anniversary with even more late night fun to keep you moving till sun up. If you think you were nice enough this year, ask Santa for one of  the special holiday rate tickets ($120) that go on sale Friday in limited quantities at campbisco.net.  - Carla Danca

Camp Bisco 9: The Ridiculous Light Rig

Written by on 07.21.2010 | Camp Bisco, Disco Biscuits

Now that a few days have passed since Camp Bisco 9 wrapped up, tons of audio, video and photos have made the rounds and we’re blown away by how good the light rig looked. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, HT contributor Wade Wilby worked on the event’s rig, but take a look at this video and you’ll see what we’re talkin’ about…

Kudos to tDB LD Johnny R. Goode on a job well done.

After a drama-filled first quarter of 2010 the Disco Biscuits are firing on all cylinders again. Not only did they slay musically, but Camp Bisco 9 received media attention other festivals of the same size can only dream about. Even the curmudgeonly Bob Lefsetz had to give the band – and festival – their due. Be sure to check out our full report from Camp Bisco 9 by Carla and Jeremy. The Biscuits return to the road on August 25 at the Bottle and Cork in Dewey Beach, DE followed by two weeks of shows.

Review: Camp Bisco 9 @ ILCC

Camp Bisco 9 @ Indian Lookout Country Club – July 15-17

It seems that every year the Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein starts the last set of the weekend by commenting, “This Was The Best Camp Bisco Yet!” and yes, this year it rings truer than ever.

[All Photos by Jeremy Gordon]

From the eclectic artists who kept the music flowing – about 48 hours in total – all weekend long to the new art installations which dazzled and entranced attendees, there was more action at Camp Bisco 9 than ever. While the Biscuits were only able to complete five of their six sets scheduled for the weekend – one set was lost due to safety concerns from heavy lightning – there was no shortage of music to keep you moving all day and night long. While the main focus of the festival seems to be turning to more of an electronic mix, there was much more than just DJs spinning over the weekend.

There were a few major changes that dramatically increased the amount of music that you could see over the weekend. Following the catastrophic rains that left last year’s Dance Tent anything but functional, the tent, which showcases DJs all weekend long and provides late night music till 4AM, was moved to a better location closer to the road up the path from the main stage. Also, a second stage was added adjacent to the Main Stage allowing bigger acts to play back to back without breaking for set changes. The Silent Disco debuted this year giving fans another great late night option that ran just short of sunrise. Other fun additions to the landscape at the Indian Lookout Country Club included performances each night by the Philadelphia Experiment – a dance troupe that included fire dancers, fire hoopers and poi spinners.

Thursday, July 15

On Thursday afternoon, Rubblebucket’s Kalmia Traver rocked a sax that was about the same size as her and the band brought a funky Jazz vibe to Camp Bisco. Many fans soon pushed on to the Dance Tent to dance with Orchard Lounge, who showed that no matter what time it is if you are ready to throw down some hot tracks, people will be there to hear it. Even with a five hour wait to enter the venue, there was no shortage of fans checking out what was their first set of the weekend. Never an act to rest on their laurels, OL also played the VIP tent vs. Magner and the Silent Disco. Pretty Lights took the stage after the Biscuits’ first set of the weekend with their Finally Moving Remix featuring an Etta James sample that had the whole crowd singing along. LCD Soundsystem closed the main stage on Night One by …
