Wednesday Intermezzo: Jamming For Barack

The surviving members of the Grateful Dead are teaming up to headline a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA on October 13. The Allman Brothers Band and one band to be named later will open this politically-charged affair.

Billy, Mickey, Phil and Bobby will be joined by RatDog’s Jeff Chimenti on keys and Warren “Mother Fucking” Haynes on lead guitar. According to Jambands/Relix, The Dead plan to tour with this lineup early next year.

On August 20 we ran a piece by Luke Sacks detailing five potential targets for Wilco/Neil Young collaborations on their upcoming tour. Recently, Wilco and Fleet Foxes teamed up for some shows and the two bands joined forces for a cover of Bob Dylan’s I Shall Be Released - a song that Luke suggested Neil rock with Wilco. Let’s hope this is a sign of collaborations to come later this year.

The Echo Project: Saturday in Photos

Twenty-four hours ago we posted, and this is a technical journalism phrase, “a wickedly kickass” photo gallery of the inaugural Echo Project’s first day from the masterful Dave Vann. If you missed it, you can click here and make up for your unforgivable transgression…or you can be a stubborn dick about it. As the legendary philosophers from Black Sheep once directed, the choice is yours.

Thievery

Thankfully the Illustrious Mr. Vann is back with the second of his three sweet galleries. Saturday mixed the usual festival touring bands like Disco Biscuits, moe., Tea Leaf Green and Perpetual Groove with electronica-based acts like MSTRKRFT, Thievery Corporation (above) and Brazilian Girls, adding a touch of hip hop from Common, folk rock from the Avett Brothers and some singer/songwriter shenanigans from Cat Power. Oh, but there’s plenty more as well, so get goin’…

So read on after the jump for the second of three photo galleries from Echo, and hey, if you’ve got some stories from the festival, let ‘em loose in the comments.

Monday’s Hors d’Oeuvres & Weekend Setlists

All four original members of Los Lobos met, attended and graduated L.A.’s Garfield High School during the early ’70s. They must’ve been saddened when on May 20th a Garfield student committed arson and burned down a good portion of the school, including the auditorium. Los Lobos hasn’t forgotten its roots, and the band will perform at a benefit concert on October 14th in hopes of raising enough money to buy a new auditorium for the students of Garfield. Nice guys.

And while you’re still deciding how much you want to pay for the new Radiohead album, read on after the jump for the weekend’s setlists, including but not limited to Andrew Bird, Arcade Fire, Bela Fleck, The National, Van Halen, Tea Leaf Green, P-Groove, moe. and all your other favorite bands…

Wednesday Intermezzo: Farm Aid NYC?

We haven’t seen this announced officially anywhere on the world wide web yet, but a reliable source tells us that Farm Aid 2007 is coming to Randall’s Island in New York. That’s right, because nothing says “Let’s save America’s family farms” more than an island off the side of fucking Manhattan in a sewage-infested river.

And as a post-script, moe. is finally releasing the next installment of their Warts and All live CD series. Warts and All Volume 5 will feature the band’s 2/22/2005 concert at the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines. The band didn’t stop playing at any point during the second set of that show, choosing to weave in and out of Spine of a Dog. Presales start today at moe.org and will be available in stores on June 12th.
