Bloggy Goodness: Coachella To Add Fall Fest?

This past weekend music festival season went into high gear as thousands descended upon Indio for the 12th installment of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival. Earlier this month fest organizers Goldenvoice and the town of Indio reached a long-term deal that would keep the event, along with its country music cousin Stagecoach, there through 2030. According to the LA Times, in addition to the 17-year deal for the April event, Goldenvoice would also be allowed to host two additional concerts each fall starting in 2014, with capacities of 75,000 and 99,000 people respectively. While there are no immediate plans, Goldenvoice Vice President Skip Paige told the Times, “If U2 wants to play a show, I don’t want to not be allowed to. We don’t have plans to do shows, but it is very possible.”

Finally, we’re roughly 36-hours away from Record Store Day, and we couldn’t be more ecstatic about the bounty of great releases that are headed into our local retailers this year. We’ve also loved the fact that organizers tapped Jack White to be RSD’s official ambassador. White, who has taken to his role, has something special in store for those that will be visiting his Third Man Records’ Shop in Nashville this weekend, as he will debut of the Third Man Record Booth. The booth, a refurbished 1947 Voice-o-Graph machine, will allow folks to record up to two minutes of audio and walk away with “a one-of-a-kind 6″ phonograph disc”. Check out how it works…

R. Kelly Teams With Phoenix For Ignition (Remix) / 1901 Mashup

Written by on 04.14.2013 | Coachella, Festivals, Phoenix, R. Kelly, Videos

All eyes were on Phoenix last night for their first-ever headlining set at Coachella. Would Daft Punk sit-in with the band as had been heavily rumored and as had happened at MSG in 2010? While that didn’t happen, the French rockers did have a surprise in store for the Indio crowd.

Rapper R. Kelly emerged during Phoenix’s encore for a mashup of Kelly’s 2003 hit Ignition (Remix) and the French act’s 2009 blockbuster 1901. This odd couple pairing actually worked pretty well with Phoenix throwing in a bit of Chloroform from the soon-to-be-released Entertainment and R. Kelly responding in kind with I’m A Flirt. Watch webcast video of the mashup…

Daft Punk’d: Songkick Coachella Info = “Bad Data”

Written by on 12.20.2012 | Coachella, Daft Punk, Festivals, News

Back on Tuesday, while the rest of the blogosphere was pimping the Daft Punk, Phoenix and Yeah Yeah Yeahs at Coachella story, we explained the problem with the source of the story – a Songkick email. Today, Songkick has posted a blog entry that goes into detail about just what happened. In short, the data was not a leak and did not come from anyone connected with the festival.

As we warned, anybody could’ve added the bunk info into Songkick’s system and if it wasn’t caught before email notifications went out, this bad data makes its way to many Songkick users.

Here’s the company’s explanation…

When bad data like this is added to Songkick, we remove it as swiftly as possible to avoid any confusion or rumours spreading. In this case, the information was added in the early hours of Saturday morning UK time – thankfully, one of our moderators in the US caught the false listing and removed it within a few hours of it being added. However, in the short space of time that it was live on the site, some email notifications were sent out. A screenshot of one of the emails was widely spread around the blogosphere and Twitter, and then picked up by the larger news sites. Unfortunately, it was seen to be a rumour and snowballed from there.

This wasn’t the first time Songkick’s system was gamed and apparently it’s been happening frequently since DaftEllaGate…

Daft Punk @ Coachella 2013? The Problem With Trusting Songkick

We’re approaching the part of the year when many major music festivals reveal their lineup. Before these reveals, music blogs and message board users do their best to figure out who’s playing where before the official announcements. Sometimes this excitement leads to the spreading of false information such as the many sites that reported Prince would headline Bonnaroo 2012.

[Screengrab via Listen Before You Buy]

Over the past 24 hours word has spread that Daft Punk, Phoenix and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs will play Coachella 2013. What was the source of this information? An email from concert database site Songkick which showed those bands and The Rolling Stones aboard for the event. Someone took a screenshot of the email and word of the rumored appearances spread like wildfire. Even Rolling Stone picked it up.

Intermezzo: Goldenvoice’s Ambitious Indio Plans

Coachella promoters Goldenvoice have been working with the city of Indio on a long-term pact which will keep the festival in the California desert town through 2030. This potential deal also would give Goldenvoice the right to stage an additional two festivals besides the two Coachella weekends and the Stagecoach festival. The deal would also grant the promoter a larger capacity for Coachella. Head over to the L.A. Times for a full rundown of the details behind Goldenvoice’s potential deal with Indio.

Here’s links to six more stories of interest this hump day…

Finally, while the Bridge School Benefit lineup for this year’s concerts came out over the weekend, we’ve already got our first addition. HT fave Ray LaMontagne has been added to the event which takes place on October 20th and 21st at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif.

S.S. Coachella To Set Sail Twice This December

Written by on 07.17.2012 | Coachella, Festivals, News, S.S. Coachella

Goldenvoice, the promoters behind the famed Coachella Festival, are taking the long-running event to the high seas this December. S.S. Coachella, aka The Celebrity Silhouette, will make two trips from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean boasting indie/dance friendly acts such as Girl Talk, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Yeasayer, Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells and Pulp. The first trip, a three-day cruise, will leave Fort Lauderdale for the Bahamas on the 16th, while a four-day trip, which visits Jamaica, will depart Fort Lauderdale on December 19th according to a report by the New York Times.

Here’s the full initial lineup:

Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy (DJ Set), Sleigh Bells, Simian Mobile Disco, Z-Trip, !!!, Warpaint, DJ Harvey, EL-P, Killer Mike, Black Lips, The Gaslamp Killer, Grimes, Cloud Nothings, Jason Bentley, The Rapture, Father John Misty, Tokimonsta, Alf Alpha

The prices start at about $500 a person and are expected to run upwards of $9,000 for a “sky suite.” Just like other floating concerts such as Jam Cruise and Sixthman’s many full-ship charters, S.S. Coachella attendees can participate in activities that go beyond the music such as a wine tasting with James Murphy, a live DJ tutorial and a D.I.Y. arts n’ crafts workshop. All in all, Goldenvoice will make use of four venues – the pool deck, the intimate sky lounge, the large silhouette theater and the artificial “lawn club.” Reservations go on sale this Saturday through the Coachella website.

Hors d’Oeuvres: Potter’s Cartoon Debut

Grace Potter’s star continues to rise as the singer and longtime HT fave has told Rolling Stone that she will provide the voice for a character on the next installment of Prep & Landing, an ABC special produced by Disney/Pixar that will air later this year. According to Potter people shouldn’t get too excited as she doesn’t actually say a word, “My character mumbles and makes noises with her mouth – which is kind of awesome.” Awesome, indeed.

Potter also revealed that she has written her first-ever Christmas song titled Naughty, Naughty Children that will be featured in Prep & Landing. In other Grace news, the Vermonter joined Stevie Wonder, Rickey Minor, Sharon Jones at last night’s Global Soul concert at the Hollywood Bowl. You can watch the finale here.

Let’s take a tour of the web for six stories of note…

Before we go, we wanted to point you in the direction of this post from Consequence of Sound which rounds up all of the fake Coachella 2012 posters that have surfaced on the web in recent weeks. We can’t wait to see how this “two weekends of Coachella” plays out next spring and any of the lineups detailed in these “fake” posters would certainly get our attention.

Coachella 2012 = Two Weekends!

Written by on 05.31.2011 | Coachella, Festivals

The organizers of the Coachella Festival have just announced that next year’s event will be held over two weekends. Here’s a look at the full statement…

We’re excited to announce Coachella 2012 will be held over TWO WEEKENDS.

In an effort to try and accommodate everyone who wants to experience the festival, COACHELLA 2012 will be two separate events, held over two consecutive weekends. We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people.

We know many of you were unable to attend this year’s festival because passes sold out much sooner than anticipated. We were truly surprised by the overwhelming response and remain honored by your passion and enthusiasm. We also know some of you purchased through non legitimate sources and were inconvenienced, gouged or totally scammed. We hope that these changes will give everyone the opportunity to purchase directly from Coachella.com.

Passes go on sale beginning this Friday, June 3rd, 2011, at 10am PST until the following Friday June 10th, 2011, at 10pm PST. This advance sale will be the only opportunity to take advantage of the Coachella Payment Plan. Passes will be available through a payment plan of 10% down and 8 equal monthly payments OR by payment in full. The price of three-day passes remains at $269 plus fees for the sixth consecutive year.

Coachella Weekend 1 – April 13-15, 2012 | Coachella Weekend 2 – April 20-22, 2012

[Coachella.com]

This is a major move for Coachella that should bring in double the income while allowing two times the number of people to partake in the event. The last few Coachella’s have been sold out, so why not make the fun last two weekends? Of course, now music fans will have to decide which weekend to hit. Sure, the lineups will be the same, but each band’s sets will certainly be different. Will this start a trend that other festies will follow? Your move, Bonnaroo.
