Review: Rupert Goes to Summer Camp

Written by Rupert on 06.02.2008 | Cornmeal, Steez, Summer Camp, The Hue, Umphrey's McGee, moe.

You should have seen this one coming. With gigantic festivals of 40,000+ capacity crowds popping up more often than Willie “Mays” Hayes, the little ones are going to get some praise. Well, the Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, IL earned plenty of it over this past Memorial Day weekend from the 12,000 attendees who experienced a pretty flawless execution.

The wait to get both in and out of the festival totaled – I kid you not – zero seconds, the food and drink vendors were plentiful and delicious (cheers to that veggie pizza stand over by the Sunshine Stage), meeting up with people was a breeze and the bands threw the shit down. Over the course of four days and nights, the weather spanned a range of about forty degrees, the tornado sirens went off, the mud came and went (twice), the sunburn was everywhere and nobody seemed inconvenienced. Why? Because, festivals are pretty easy when there aren’t too many people.

That and the music was really, really fun. READ ON for more from Rupert…

Bust Outs: It’s Time For Bluegrass

Written by Rupert on 04.24.2008 | Bust Outs, Cornmeal, Hot Buttered Rum, Mr. Blotto

Since it looks like we’re finally in the clear after Ma Nature pinned Old Man Winter for a three count, it’s time to extend a warm welcome to the spring. We all have our sunny day favorites, like the Allman Brothers, Paul Simon, and of course the Tuff Gong, but nothing quite encapsulates the feeling of spring fever and festival season like some good old fashioned bluegrass music.

So, for this week’s Bust Outs, we have assembled a list of some cheerful, rollicking bust outs from some of Telluride’s finest offspring:

The Tony Furtado Band - 9/8/2001 - Stagger Lee

The key to being a fan of the pickin’ is to find the songs you love and then craft some good bluegrass daydreams while you listen. This remarkably original version of Stagger Lee is perfect for a ramble down the endless stretch of Highway 80 through Nebraska in your 18-wheeler. Get on your CB radio, call up your road buddy “Youngblood” for a smoky report (i.e., police check) and cruise off into the sun. The outlines of those long-awaited Rocky Mountains will arrive in no time.

Cover Wars: 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover Edition

Well the Tea Leaf Green fans have done it…and that is awesome because ballot-stuffing is encouraged here at Hidden Track. Turns out Trevor really is the best one to sing “I Am An Old Woman”…Seriously though, nice turnout! DGold, the person who had TLG on his radio show in the first place to play this song, said he listened to all eight versions and ended up casting his vote for Susan Tedeschi - you sir are why we do this.

Onwards to Volume 5, this week we’ll be listening to interesting renditions of Paul Simon’s 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. Paul Simon is very guarded when song meanings are attempted to be extracted from him, and this single from his album Still Crazy After All These Years is no exception.
