Delta Spirit: Ode To Sunshine

[rating=3.50]

Shimmering sixties pop, flourishing with enchanting vocals; Ode to Sunshine is a solid freshman effort from Delta Spirit. Running just over 40 minutes, these songs feel communal with clanging cymbals strumming strings and even marching horns popping up in the title track.  The influences are obvious with the Killer B’s: The Beatles, The Band, The Beach Boys, and these boys fit perfectly in the midst of the current indie-hippy revival alongside Dr. Dog, Cold War Kids, Hymns and a host of others.

Not all is perfect as the songwriting can become lazy, the almost 6 minute “House Built for Two” is a total bore and sounds like a third grade rhyming game, but when they spice it up, getting political and heartfelt on “People, Turn Around,” things improve.  At its peak the infectious rolling barroom piano on “Trashcan” is the super highlight here, the whole track pulsates; giving these Spirit’s a life force to expand upon during future albums.
