Feist – How Come You Never Go There

Written by on 10.07.2011 | Feist, Videos

No one would have faulted Feist if she had immediately gone back into the studio to capitalize on the breakout success of 2007′s The Reminder, which thanks to a placement of the adorably catchy tune 1234 in an iPod commercial made the Canadian singer-songwriter somewhat of a household name. Instead she took her time in crafting the follow-up, retreating to Big Sur to record, with the results being released this past Tuesday on Metals.

Earlier this week, Feist, along with a full horn section, and some vocal assistance courtesy of the women of Mountain Men, stopped by the Late Show to perform How Come You Never Go There…

Last Night’s Guest Spots – Jeff Tweedy w/ Feist & Mike Gordon w/ Dude of Life

Written by on 03.24.2011 | Cactus, Feist, Videos, Wilco

Let’s break away from the traditional single-clip format of our 10AM video post to look at two sit-ins that took place last night…

Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy returned to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto last night for the second of two shows to kick off a brief solo run. During the first encore, Tweedy was joined by Feist for a gorgeous version of You and I. Feist appears on the studio version of the tune found on Wilco (The Album) and has performed the song with Wilco at two shows last year as well as on The Late Show with David Letterman.

Here’s a look at Feist singing You and I with Tweedy last night…

Down in Brooklyn, Mike Gordon and his solo band rocked the Brooklyn Bowl for the second of two sold-out shows. Towards the end of the first set, the Phish bassist welcomed longtime friend Steve “Dude of Life” Pollak to sing a cover of Linda Ronstadt’s You’re No Good…

Trailer: Look At What The Light Did Now

Written by on 10.08.2010 | Feist, Trailers, Videos

With the release of The Reminder in 2007, Leslie Feist became a bit of a household name thanks in part to her ubiquitous single 1,2,3,4 – a song featured prominently in an ad for the iPod nano. Feist’s next release will come in the form of a documentary film called Look At What The Light Did. Shot on Super 8, the film documents the making of the album and subsequent tour that featured elaborate stage designs, puppets and on-screen projection. Check out the trailer for this flick…

Video: Beck, Wilco & Feist – Little Hands

Written by on 11.16.2009 | Beck, Feist, Skip Spence, Videos, Wilco

As we previously reported, during their swing through California earlier this summer Wilco stopped by Beck’s recording studio to lend a hand to his Record Club project – which has already featured albums by The Velvet Underground and Leonard Cohen. For the third installment, the combo took on Skip Spence’s cult masterpiece Oar. Here’s Beck, Wilco and the lovely Leslie Feist with the album’s opening track, Little Hands…

Friday Mix Tape: Just Duet

We’ve been slacking on our Friday Mix Tapes of late, but fear not loyal HT readers – we think this week’s fantastic mix will make up for its recent absences. This week’s batch of tasty tunes is dedicated to the seemingly lost art of the duet, with a number of my favorites from the last few years. So without wasting anymore time with this intro, let’s just get at it…

mixtape-1

We kick things off with the only song here that is not a duet, but the one that that inspired this whole mix: John Prine’s Donald & Lydia, which I caught Deer Tick and Liz Isenberg covering in San Francisco. This version comes from the appropriately titled John Prine Live. From there we’ve got the aforementioned acts dueting on Friday Xiii, from the brilliant Born On Flag Day. Next up, we’ve got one of my favorite tunes off Wilco (The Album), the sublime pairing of Leslie Feist and Jeff Tweedy on You & I.

Then, we’ve got Norah Jones collaborating with Ryan Adams on Dear John from the underrated album of Adams’ trifecta of 2005 releases – Jacksonville City Nights. We follow that up with Jenny Lewis and Elvis Costello pairing up for Carpetbaggers from Acid Tongue. Finally, we close things out with one of the all time classic duets – Islands In The Stream. This version comes from MMJ’s epic New Years Eve show at Madison Square Garden and features Nicole Atkins and Jim James bringing down the house. Did we miss any? Leave your favorite current contemporary duet in the comments.

Bloggy Goodness: CYHSY Offer Up Statue

The demise of former ultra-hyped blog buzz band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah may have been a bit exaggerated by the same sources that had previously hailed them. The Brooklyn-based band had supposedly played their “final” gig at BAM last month before going on an indefinite hiatus, that was until Wednesday when the newly reunited act stopped by NBC’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to debut their new song Statue.

While CYHSY have made no promises about their future, they have made the new tune available as a free download via their website.

Finally, former New York Yankee center fielder and classically trained guitarist Bernie Williams will release his sophomore effort Moving Forward on April 14. The 14 track mostly instrumental album features a  “mixture of classical and jazz guitar topped-off with additional Latin rhythms” and includes a special cover of Glory Days featuring Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa on vocals. The one-time Allmans collaborator will celebrate the release with a special show at NYC’s Nokia Theatre on April 18, with tickets currently on-sale.

Friday’s Leftovers: Iran Into Trouble

Andy Samberg’s Digital Shorts are about the only consistently funny parts of the otherwise lifeless Saturday Night Live program these days. And this past week’s I Ran So Far Away short that stood out among the season opener dreck was set to achieve the same viral video success as predecessors Dick In A Box and Lazy Sunday. But NBC suddenly pulled the video. How come? It turns out the SNL team lifted the melody for I Ran from an obscure Aphex Twin song, and Hitchaser does a nice job of getting into the nitty gritty of why NBC had to bag the short.

While we wait to see what Andy steals this week, let’s check out some links:

And, lastly, The Daily Swarm alerts us that Maryland may not have money to bail out failing hospitals, but they have plenty of money for new music halls.

Up Next: An Indie Version of ‘Voices That Care’

Written by on 08.28.2007 | Feist, Videos

Feisty Canadian singer-songwriter, um, Feist, played the ol’ Letterman program last night, and she brought a few of her all-star indie friends with her. Joined by members of Mates of State, Broken Social Scene, The National, New Pornographers and Grizzly Bear, the all-white ensemble (clothes, you racist!) surrounded the darkly clad Feist and turned in a pretty sick performance of her 1234.

I don’t mean this as an insult, but can’t you see that song being played through the credits of a super schmaltzy film? Something like a Phenomenon.

(Okay, I asked for it, and I’ll deliver: Voices That Care — How sad is it that I still know every word to this song? I’m guessing “quite sad” is the answer.)
