Monday’s Hors D’Oeuvres: The Return of the TLA

Apparently, Live Nation’s Fillmoreization of America isn’t working out as well as planned. Late last week the company announced that the Fillmore at the TLA in Philadelphia is returning to its original name: The Theater of the Living Arts.

Hey look, if Live Nation wants to build new venues from scratch and brand them Fillmore, people will accept the name. But, if you take a theater that has been around for decades and just try to have people call it something completely different, it just won’t hold. For example, does anyone actually call the amphitheatre in Mansfield anything other than Great Woods?

Let’s see what else was cookin’ this weekend:

As expected, the Grateful Dead officially confirmed the release of Road Trips Vol. 1 No. 3 featuring gems from the Summer of 1971. You can stream six of the songs from the album thanks to a virtual listening party. Holy Bertha!!!

Friday Mix Tape: Live at the Fillmore East

Written by HT Staff on 04.04.2008 | Fillmore, Friday Mix Tape

We couldn’t go another Friday without dropping a Mix Tape, so we’ve enlisted our friend Neddy to do our dirty work. Take it away, Neddy…

I guess if you were recording a live album back then, the place to do it was undoubtedly the Fillmore East, because there sure are a lot of ‘em. Here’s a taste, a full 100MB of the hippie-dippie goods:

01 In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed — The Allman Brothers Band: The Fillmore Concerts
02 The Lee Shore — Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: 4 Way Street
03 California — John Mayall: The Turning Point
04 Voodoo Child (Slight Return) — Jimi Hendrix: Live At The Filmore East
05 Willie The Pimp pt. 1 — Frank Zappa: Fillmore East, June 1971
06 Cowgirl In The Sand — Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Live At The Fillmore East
07 Morning Dew — Grateful Dead: Ladies And Gentlemen, Fillmore East, NYC

Bloggy Goodness: We’re Still Not Used To Calling It The Fillmore New York

Written by Some Dude on 04.03.2008 | Bjork, Bloggy Goodness, Fillmore, Live Nation

It was a little over a year ago that music mega corp Live Nation decided to do some re-branding of their venues around the country by slapping the Fillmore tag on them. The first of these venues was the former Irving Plaza, which is now known as the Fillmore New York @ Irving Plaza. While we’ve dug the free apples, vintage concert posters and snazzy new paint job - Music Snobbery has some other thoughts calling it the shittiest venue in the city. Ouch!

Finally, following in the footsteps of their Radiohead and R.E.M. tribute compilations, the fine folks at Stereogum decided to give the same treatment to Bjork with Enjoyed. This edition features the likes of the Liars, Dirty Projectors, and Xiu Xiu covering the Icelandic songstress. What, no Charles Barkley?
