Our buddy Sunil was down at Jazz Fest and has shared a couple of videos we think you’ll dig.
Supergroup Dragon Smoke was one of many incredible bands to play last week’s Fiya Fest. This group consists of Eric Lindell, Ivan Neville, Stanton Moore and Rob Mercurio. At their Fiya Fest set, Dragon Smoke was joined by a horn section that included Skerik. One of the songs the group performed at Fiya Fest was a cover of Landslide from Fleetwood Mac’s eponymous 1975 album.
Neville has sung the tune before during his solo piano set aboard Jam Cruise 11, but we like this reggae-tinged version of the Fleetwood Mac classic even better. Check it out…
On May 4 New Orleans’ Bonerama played a gig at Feret Street Publiq House in The Crescent City. During Bonerama’s set, the band performed a horn-driven cover of the Grateful Dead’s West L.A. Fadeaway that’s unlike any version of the song we’ve ever heard.
Early in Fleetwood Mac’s current tour Lindsey Buckingham broke the news that the band would soon be releasing a new EP. That EP, titled “Extended Play,” was released today on iTunes marking the first new release of music from the Mac since 2003′s Say You Will. Extended Play contains three new tracks penned by Buckingham as well as a resurrected track from the Buckingham Nicks project.

Speaking of Fleetwood Mac, we came upon impressive fan-shot video of the band’s entire April 26th performance from Pittsburgh. The footage was shot by YouTuber ClubDoc and shows The Mac in fine form. We’ve compiled a playlist of the 23 songs Fleetwood Mac performed in Pittsburgh…

Finally, our friends at Boing Boing posted this crazy clip of John Lennon teaming up with Chuck Berry for a version of Memphis, Tennessee on The Mike Douglas Show in 1972. Our favorite part has to be Berry’s bemused look when Yoko Ono stars screaming. Check it out…
During their peak in the late 1970s, there may not have been a bigger band than Fleetwood Mac, who were arguably as famous for their musical output, as they were for their in-band relationships. On August 14, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act’s tunes will be the subject of the new tribute album – Just Tell Me That You Want Me – that will be released via Hear Music/Concord. The 17-track release features an impressive and diverse array of indie-rock bands tackling material almost exclusively from the band’s Buckingham/Nicks years, with a handful of deep cut tracks from their blues band era.
Check out the track listing…

Finally, it’s been a big week for Justin Vernon and his Bon Iver band mates. Earlier this week the band released a seven-song iTunes Sessions digital album. The live release, which will run you $6.99 and is only available via iTunes, leans almost exclusively on tunes from their most recent self-titled album, as well as a cover of Bjork’s Who Is It? The other big news coming out of the Bon Iver camp, was that Justin Vernon had designed a signature shoe in conjunction with the folks at Keep, with the proceeds from its sale going to benefit the Best Friends Animal Society, an animal advocacy group which operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals. The footwear, which will run you $75 and are currently available for pre-order, features “herringbone accents, a black fishbone detail across the toe, and a canvas upper custom dyed to a perfect pale salmon.”
While we first fell in love with Lissie’s brand of soulful, sun-baked folk-rock all the way back in December of 2009, the singer-songwriter seemed to really grab people’s attention with a series of diverse and radically rearranged cover songs from the likes of Kid Cudi, Metallica and Lady Gaga. Last week, Lissie released the six-song EP, Covered Up With Flowers via Fat Possum, and dropped the video for her slow burner take on the Fleetwood Mac break up classic – Go Your Own Way.
Lissie has a handful of upcoming live dates, which includes a high profile appearance at the newly expanded Coachella Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.
Back in 1987 when I was just ten years old, I used to spend way too much time watching MTV. I fell in love with both Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie after watching the Little Lies video and talked my parents into buying me a few Fleetwood Mac cassettes. Tusk and Rumors never left my tape deck for the next few years, so I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Mac. Tonight, I finally get to see them live at Madison Square Garden.
McVie is long gone and Nicks seems to be on another planet, but I’ve always wanted to see their hits live and this tour is the perfect opportunity as they aren’t supporting a new album. I know it’s cool to hate on the Buckingham/Nicks period of Fleetwood Mac, yet these are the songs I grew up with. Shortly after I picked up Tusk and Rumors in ’87, MTV showed a live special to promote the just released Tango In The Night album. Here’s a powerful version of The Chain from that program…
This week’s B List looks at ten bands that went on without their fearless leaders. We’re talking about the main creative force not just the lead singer. Team HLA has helped with this post and there have been some healthy debates about what exactly constitutes a band’s leader.
Opinions vary, but here’s what I settled on with their help…
1. The Doors – When anyone thinks of The Doors they think of both Jim Morrison’s songs and voice. Morrison died in 1971 and his three surviving bandmates went on as a trio for two unsuccessful albums before disbanding.
2. The Dead – After Jerry Garcia died in 1995 the surviving members of the Grateful Dead thought better of moving on without Captain Trips for a few years. In 1998 all of them except for drummer Bill Kreutzmann reformed as The Other Ones for that summer’s Furthur Festival. When Billy joined his old bandmates in 2002 they kept The Other Ones moniker for a while until they decided to go back to be calling The Dead for Summer Tour 2003.

Fleetwood Mac will reunite for their first tour in over five years in support of a new greatest hits compilation called Unleashed. The classic rock band have revealed the first 16 dates for what is sure to be a lengthy North American arena tour, which will kick off on March 1 at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, PA. After several midwest stops the Mac will head east with shows throughout New York state as well as up and down the East Coast. Tickets for the first leg of their Unleashed tour go on-sale on December 15.
If you not down with the Mac, than maybe one of these recently announced tours will be for you…
Finally, the inital artist list for the 3rd installment of the Sounds Like Brooklyn Festival has been revealed. The borough-wide event, which takes place over the course of the two weekends and a variety of venues in February, will feature the likes of CYHSY (who took their name from a graffitied wall in Williamsburg), Beirut, Kaki King, Chairlift and Japanther – with more artists to be revealed in the coming weeks. The event is a mix of free and pay events is sponsored by the Brooklyn Academy Of Music “to showcase of the some of the most innovative music coming out of the borough”.
Remember the rumor that Sheryl Crow was going to be joining Fleetwood Mac for a world tour? Fortunately, it’s not gonna happen. Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham squashed those rumors during an interview with Gary Graff of Billboard, but admitted it had been discussed. According to Buckingham, after a nearly five year layoff Fleetwood Mac plans to get back on the road for a tour early next year sans Lance Armstrong’s ex-girlfriend. The Mac will head into the studio after the tour.
Here’s some other news of interest from the week that was:
