Furthur Announces Spring Tour Dates

Written by on 12.09.2011 | Furthur, News, Tour Dates

Last month when Phil Lesh announced a run of Phil & Friends shows near Denver, Dead fans couldn’t help but wonder about the future of Furthur. Ever since Jerry died, Lesh has had a fondness for changing things up every few years and Furthur has already lasted just about as long as any other post-Dead project involving Lesh. Apparently those fears were for naught as Furthur has just announced a  Spring Tour that starts on April 5 at the Wang in Boston and finishes on April 18 after eight shows at the Beacon Theatre in NYC.

Furthur is taking a page out of the Allman’s playbook this tour by doing a long run of shows at the Beacon. This will allow the band to set up shop in the Big Apple and cuts down on touring. The public on-sale for each of these shows takes place next Friday, December 16, at 10AM ET. Internet pre-sales will commence on Monday, December 12 at Noon and run until December 15. Mail orders will accept postmarks from December 10th through the 20th.

Furthur NYE ’11 – ’12 in San Francisco

Written by on 10.14.2011 | Furthur, News, Tour Dates

When Furthur first started, nearly three years ago at this point, we wondered how soon it would be before Phil Lesh and Bob Weir would move on to a different project. Clearly the former Grateful Dead members have dedicated themselves to this band more than any other since Jerry passed and that commitment will continue into 2012 following the announcement of three New Year’s Run performances at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California on December 29 – 31.

A GDTSTOO mail order pre-sale period begins on Sunday and runs until Saturday, November 12, while a Front Gate ticketing internet pre-order begins on Monday, Oct. 17 and runs until Thursday, Oct. 20. Tickets go on sale to the public through Ticketmaster on Friday, October 21 at 10AM PT.

What show(s) will you be seeing this New Year’s Eve?

Briefly: Goin’ Furthur at the Knick

Written by on 10.10.2011 | Furthur

Post-Jerry act Furthur was scheduled to perform at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania on November 15. That show has been cancelled due to what Furthur.net calls “unforeseen production complications,” leading the band to add a new gig that night at the Times-Union Center in Albany, New York.

The Times-Union Center, a venue formerly known as “The Knick,” has hosted more than a few memorable Grateful Dead shows in the past and was home to the 1990 performances that yielded the Dozin’ At The Knick release.

Here’s ticketing info for the new show…

Pre-sales for the newly added show in Albany will commence at Noon EST on Weds, October 12 and go through 6pm EST on Friday, October 14. Public on-sale will be Saturday, October 15 at 10am EST. Refunds for the canceled State College show can be had at original place of purchase.

Robinson Gets His Red Rocks Off w/ Furthur

Of the hundreds of outdoor venues Phil Lesh has played over the past 50 years, the Grateful Dead/Furthur bassist ranks Red Rocks in the top two along with The Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. In fact, there’s a plaque at the Morrison, Colorado venue that says as much, so you knew last night’s Furthur show at Red Rocks had the makings of something special.

[via @MusicNeverStops]

For the start of the second set, Phil and Bobby’s band welcomed Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and Chris Robinson Brotherhood to lead them through classic Pigpen-sung tunes The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion) and Hard To Handle as well as the Furthur debut of Bob Dylan’s You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere. Robinson has a long history with Weir and Lesh dating back to the Crowes opening for the Dead in Tampa on April 7, 1995. More recently, Chris did a few tours with Phil and Friends and performed back in August with Weir and Jackie Greene at the Folks Festival in Lyons, Colorado. Back on March 12, 2010, Robinson first sat in with Furthur at Phil Lesh’s 70th Birthday Bash, where he sung a number of songs including The Stranger.

Stream This Show: Wilco / Panic / Furthur

Written by on 09.20.2011 | Furthur, Widespread Panic, Wilco

Three of our favorite bands have announced live concert simulcasts over the past few days and we wanted to make sure our readers know about them.

This Sunday, September 25, NPR will webcast Wilco’s show live from Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. While we’re still awaiting details, this broadcast was mentioned yesterday during NPR’s live chat and listening party with the band. Show time is scheduled for 5:30PM ET with Nick Lowe set to open.

On Sunday October 9, HDNet will broadcast Widespread Panic’s annual Tunes For Tots benefit show live from the newly renovated Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. If previous HDNet live concert broadcasts are any indicator, the quality of this simulcast should be ridiculous.

Finally, Sirius/XM’s Grateful Dead channel will simulcast Furthur’s Oct. 4th performance live from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas starting at 11PM ET. You can catch rebroadcasts on Oct. 7 at 3PM ET, Oct. 9 at 8AM ET or Oct. 10 at 8PM ET, if you miss the live simulcast.

Clarence Clemons and Al Schnier Join Furthur

Written by on 04.06.2011 | Furthur

Furthur ended the best tour in the band’s short history tonight at the Mizner Amphitheater in Boca Raton, FL; where the group still had a few more tricks up their sleeves. Towards the end of Furthur’s first set, Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band as well as moe. guitarist Al Schnier came out to jam. The pair emerged for a pair of covers from the Grateful Dead’s repertoire – Howlin Wolf’s Little Red Rooster and Bobby Bland’s Turn on Your Lovelight.

[Photo by Dylan Carney from @furthurband]

Clemons made more than a few appearances with the Grateful Dead in the late ’80s starting on New Year’s Eve ’88 – ’89 and even did a run of shows with the Jerry Garcia Band in 1989. “The Big Man” currently lives in Florida while moe. is in the middle of a rare tour of The Sunshine State. Fittingly, Furthur finished this evening’s show with The End by The Beatles. Next up for Furthur is a pair of shows at Shoreline on June 3 and 4.

Review: Furthur @ Hampton Coliseum

Written by on 04.04.2011 | Furthur, Reviews

Furthur @ Hampton Coliseum, April 1

Words: Mike Ross

Hampton Coliseum, known by many as “The Mothership,” is impressive from the outside, but looking around from our nosebleed seats on the outer edge of the bowl before the lights went down I couldn’t help but feel incredulous that this giant cavernous place doesn’t suck out the energy of anybody trying to emit anything from that stage. It’s almost self-defeating alienating in it’s sheer hugeness – alienation being precisely the thing that people are trying to escape in coming to a public event, perhaps especially a Grateful Dead-related one.

For the first set of Furthur’s April Fools’ Day performance, I was feeling like maybe I was right. The band seemed a little tired. Maggie’s Farm came up and I found myself wondering, Why do they bother with songs like this anymore? Is there any life left in these songs for this band? The Grateful Dead as a band was a finite entity with a beginning and an end, and doing songs like Maggie’s Farm in the first set was part of their natural progression. When Furthur convened 15 years later, they had the option of picking from the cream of the crop, starting fresh and interpreting the Grateful Dead ethos in a way that would be satisfying to them and their fans – so why play first-set filler? Why not fill both sets with awesome?

Of course, my wrongheaded thinking would be spun on its ass by the time the show was over. Furthur gave me the gentle reminder that, just like in the Grateful Dead before it, the magic either happens, or it doesn’t – and it doesn’t much matter where. It can come and go, and it can be prodded and some pretty good stuff can happen in the meantime – these are professionals, after all – but in the end you can’t really force it. This was proven in a second-set Black Peter – usually a bit of a snore-fest for me – that just ripped. It also showed another facet of the progenitors of this music: liftoff can come from any member or members of the band; in the case of this Black Peter it was the Pehrson-Sunshine-Chimenti show. Those thick organ swirls and those harmonies (“See here how everything / lead up to this day”) elevated the whole stage by about five feet, and before anyone knew what was happening, the Mothership was hovering in place somewhere above Hampton. 19-Year-Old Man Falls to Death @ Concert

Written by on 03.31.2011 | Furthur

We’re saddened to report that a 19-year-old man died early this morning from injuries sustained after falling through a fourth-floor window of the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh during last night’s Furthur concert according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

As per the article, one witness said McDonald, PA resident Joseph Kimutis “appeared to have gotten into a three-point stance, ‘like a football player,’ yelled ‘Hike!’ and charged the window.”

No word yet on Kimutis’ physical and mental state leading up to the incident and toxicology reports are pending. The concert went on as planned. Furthur next performs tomorrow night at the Hampton Coliseum.
