Cover Alert: Grace Potter & the Nocturnals – Friend of the Devil

Yesterday we told you about the cover of the Grateful Dead’s Casey Jones that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals delivered at their first of two Capitol Theatre shows in Port Chester, New York. Well last night, at the group’s last U.S. show for a while, Potter and her band treated fans to yet another Grateful Dead classic at a venue that hosted the iconic band 18 times in the early ’70s.

Cover Alert: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – Casey Jones

HT faves Grace Potter and the Nocturnals kicked off a two-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York last night. Towards the end of the evening Potter and her band debuted a Grateful Dead cover for the first time in the group’s history.

Grace and guitarist Benny Yurco shared vocals for a rockin’ take on Casey Jones…

This has been even more of a cover-heavy tour for GP&tN than usual as the band has paid tribute to Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Bill Withers as well as debuted the traditional House of the Rising Sun since hitting the road at the start of January. The U.S. portion of the “Roar Tour” finishes tonight at The Cap before the band heads to Europe and Australia in March.

Cover Alert: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – House of the Rising Sun (Traditional)

HT faves Grace Potter and the Nocturnals played before a capacity crowd at The Egg in Albany, New York on Wednesday night. Towards the end of the show, Potter and a stripped down version of her band moved to the front of the stage for a few unplugged tunes that included the GP&N debut of House of the Rising Sun.

The traditional song dates back centuries before The Animals made an interpretation of House of the Rising Sun a hit in 1964. Potter and the Nocturnals used House of the Rising Sun as an intro to Gumbo Moon back in 2006, but as far as we can tell this was the group’s first full version of the tune. We dig the haunting arrangement and Grace’s powerful vocals and thought you might as well…

Yesterday’s show also contained covers of Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden and Heart’s Crazy On You as well as an acoustic (just Potter and Scott Tournet) Falling Or Flying complete with Cortez The Killer teases. Here’s a video of Haynes sitting in on Gimme Shelter…

Worlds Collide @ Capitol Theatre: Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes, Grace Potter, Bobby Keys and The Roots

The recently reopened Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York might be best known for all the legendary performances that took place in the room in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, but last night more history was made at the famed venue as members of the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Phish and Grace Potter came together with The Roots to usher in a new era for The Cap at a benefit for HeadCount. For many in the room it was was their first visit to The Cap, which reopened on Tuesday with a performance from Bob Dylan, and it was hard not to be struck by the amazing renovation that brought the venue back to life. Impresario Peter Shapiro and his team put years worth of planning and construction into the historic venue which has left the area with a gem of a venue that features an arena-sized light rig, a state-of-the-art sound system and an unbelievable array of projectors.

[via RMikeW on Instagram]

The action started with a solo acoustic set from Grateful Dead / Furthur guitarist Bob Weir. Weir is in the midst of his second-ever solo tour and seemed comfortable on the stage as he delivered one Dead classic after another. After a few years when Bobby seemed to scream rather than sing, Weir’s voice currently sounds as good as it has since Jerry passed. Following a cover of Dear Prudence, Weir welcomed Warren Haynes, Grace Potter and Bobby Keys out as the evening’s first guests. Grace told the crowd she had never sang a Dead song before and that she wasn’t familiar with the tune they were about to play, Bird Song, and it showed. Potter scatted, be-bopped and wailed, leaving a texture behind the gorgeous version of Bird Song Warren and the Bobby’s laid down. Warren, Weir and Grace then combined forces for Jack Straw, a song Potter seemed to know, with Bobby and Haynes trading verses. Keys came back out for a raucous Jailhouse Rock.

Set 1 (Bob Weir, solo acoustic): The Music Never Stopped -> Me & My Uncle -> Friend of the Devil, Loose Lucy, Lost Sailor -> Saint of Circumstance, Peggy-O, Easy to Slip -> Dear Prudence, Bird Song*, Jack Straw**, Jailhouse Rock*

Warren Haynes and Grace Potter: Wild Horses, Gold Dust Woman

Set 2 (The Roots): Paul Revere, Proceed, The Fire, Quills, Swept Away, Next Movement, Dynamite, Mellow My Man, Break You Off, You Got Me, Get Busy, Thought @ Work, How I Got Over

Encore (All Star Jam): First Tube^, Bathtub Gin^, Pigtail&, Dancing in the Street@, Thrill is Gone@, Whipping Post@

At the end of Jailhouse Rock Warren asked the crowd to give Weir a big hand and Bobby left Haynes, Potter  and Keys on stage for a beautiful take on The Rolling Stones’ Wild Horses. As an example of the sheer awesomeness of The Cap’s projection system, images of psychedelic horses were painted on the venue’s walls during the Stones cover. The finale of the opening set found Warren and Grace teaming up for a scintillating cover of Gold Dust Woman off Fleetwood Mac’s famed Rumors album. The pair have been covering this song for over four years, with a particularly impressive version thrown down at the 2008 Jammy’s, and their familiarity showed.

Last night the famed Capitol Theatre in Port Chester re-opened after years of planning and renovation. On Friday, the historic venue will host a benefit for HeadCount featuring Bob Weir and The Roots.

In addition to the two headliners, HeadCount has just revealed that Warren Haynes, Grace Potter and Bobby Keys will be among the special guests rounding out the bill. Hitting The Trunk Road: Grace Potter & The Glass Ceiling

At the 2006 Jammy Awards in New York City, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals were named the New Groove of the Year, a (regrettably) antiquated accolade that essentially served as the jamband version of Rookie of the Year. Despite her ostensible youth, the then 23-year-old Potter hardly seemed like a neophyte as she joined Joe Satriani, Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis, Willie Waldman and Stephen Perkins for a smoldering rendition of Neil Young’s Cortez The Killer. Fast forward to the present – where the vivacious leader of the Nocturnals serves as the focus of seductive Esquire video pictorials and merits the VH1 Storytellers treatment – and it seems an eternity since Potter & The Nocturnals were one of the jamband scene’s rising stars. While GPN have never disowned the support of the jamband scene that was quick to recognize their remarkable talent, they have wisely refused to wrap themselves snugly within the hemp-sewn hoodies and tie-dyed sundresses of their roots. Always savvier beyond their years, Ms. Potter and her band have always known the dirty little (not so) secret of the music industry: to fall within the penumbra of the jamband world places a glass ceiling on the heights of any potential success.

[Grace Potter and the Nocturnals 2012]

No matter the strength of the grass roots movement that fuels the surge of a jamband’s renown or the speed with which goodwill catalyzes, for the large majority of jambands that can objectively be deemed successful, the upper reaches of their popularity plateaus at the theater stage. Reliably filling two to three thousand person venues in major metropolises will result in a satisfying and often-profitable career. However, it’s an upper limit set off from the rest of the music industry’s Holy Grail by the virtual glass blockade. In a realistic sense, the career apex for any modern day jamband would be hosting and curating their own destination festival like moe. with their various throe-downs or Warren Haynes and his annual Mountain Jam.

Video: Allman Brothers Band w/ Grace Potter & Randall Bramblett – Southern Man

Written by on 03.18.2012 | Allmans, Grace Potter, Videos

The Allman Brothers Band’s March Madness run rolled on last night at the Beacon Theatre, where the legendary jam act welcomed Grace Potter, James van der Bogert and Randall Bramblett for a smoking version of Neil Young’s Southern Man that kicked off the electric segment of the second set. As noted by Jambands.com in their full recap of yesterday’s show, none of the group’s founding members were on stage for the Allman’s debut of Southern Man as van der Bogert and Marc Quinones spelled Butch Trucks and Jaimoe on drums, while Bramblett (and Potter for a few minutes) handled keys duties instead of Gregg Allman. Watch this smokin’ version of Southern Man thanks to illmatic3384

Hors d’Oeuvres: Potter’s Cartoon Debut

Grace Potter’s star continues to rise as the singer and longtime HT fave has told Rolling Stone that she will provide the voice for a character on the next installment of Prep & Landing, an ABC special produced by Disney/Pixar that will air later this year. According to Potter people shouldn’t get too excited as she doesn’t actually say a word, “My character mumbles and makes noises with her mouth – which is kind of awesome.” Awesome, indeed.

Potter also revealed that she has written her first-ever Christmas song titled Naughty, Naughty Children that will be featured in Prep & Landing. In other Grace news, the Vermonter joined Stevie Wonder, Rickey Minor, Sharon Jones at last night’s Global Soul concert at the Hollywood Bowl. You can watch the finale here.

Let’s take a tour of the web for six stories of note…

Before we go, we wanted to point you in the direction of this post from Consequence of Sound which rounds up all of the fake Coachella 2012 posters that have surfaced on the web in recent weeks. We can’t wait to see how this “two weekends of Coachella” plays out next spring and any of the lineups detailed in these “fake” posters would certainly get our attention.

Interview: Grace Potter, The Anti-Diva

The year 2010 marked a huge milestone in the career of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The band broke out in virtually every conceivable way: they were featured on VH1 Divas Salute the Troops, Grace sang a duet with Kenny Chesney and the band had songs prominently featured in the feature films, Tangled and Alice in Wonderland. Shortly after the VH1 Divas performance, the band even outsold the Beatles on iTunes as the single top selling artist. Let’s just say the past few months have been nothing short of life-changing in the world of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

[All photos by Jeremy Gordon]

“It’s always a funny thing when things start happening quickly,“ Grace comments. “You know that these things have been in the works for a long time and all of the sudden they get delivered to the world. Sometimes things hit really big and sometimes they don’t. I was really pleased with how quickly people responded to everything from the Tangled song to the VH1 Divas performance to the duet with Kenny Chesney. All that exposure hit a fever pitch, and I guess people finally had to look us up online. Our website crashed the day of the VH1 performance. It was really rewarding to finally hit that moment where everything really fell into place.”

It’s rather ironic how the VH1 Divas performance breached the tipping point whereby Grace Potter and the Nocturnals catapulted into the limelight, because for years Grace has playfully shunned the diva mentality. Even in performing on the program, she sensed VH1 chose her based on the perception that she was going to show up as the Vermont girl in the flannel and boots, yet got a big surprise when she appeared in one of her emblazoned mini-dresses. Even now that she has embraced her style and performs in much flashier outfits, Grace still gets a good laugh out of the whole idea of herself as any kind of diva. READ ON for more…

Last Week’s Sauce: January 10th – 16th

Normally, I find the month of January to be a pretty uneventful one in the world of live music. Bands play big winter tours often leading up to a big New Year’s Eve blowout, and the beginning of the calendar year seems to be a rest from the road. So I was surprised when I did my search of the Live Music Archive and found 84 recordings already uploaded at press time. We’ve got Cracker covering an album in its entirety (and that wasn’t the only album in that show), the Disco Biscuits getting drummer Allen Aucoin back onstage, Grace Potter busting out a MMJ cover, an interesting sequence of music from Tim Palmieri and a couple of classics from the Tom Tom Club.

You can download all of this week’s audio in one easy to listen to MP3 that we call the Last Week’s Sauce Podcast, click here to download.
