2010 has been super kind to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, who ended last night’s episode of The Late Show by laying down a smokin’ version of Paris (Ooh La La) off the band’s self-titled album. Take a look…

Last Week’s Sauce features recordings of shows from the previous week. This week we’ll look at almost exclusively shows that took place on New Year’s Eve.

Artist & Title: Assembly Of Dust – Brown Sugar
Date & Venue: 2009-12-31 Tupelo Music Hall, Salisbury MA
Taper & Show Download: SmokinJoe
“You should have heard him just around midnight”. A few covers, an acoustic section and a fan requested bustout of Strangefolk’s Far From Yourself round out this New Year’s show from Reid Genauer and Assembly of Dust. Reid hits the road again solo for a few shows to start 2010. Catching him solo is highly recommended, I’ve said it before, Reid is one of the best screamers of our generation.

This three-chord ditty, loosely based on Hernán Cortés, is originally off the 1970 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album Zuma. The simplicity and shear length of the tune makes it a prime candidate for cover renditions, and more of then than not… guest appearances. Often times those sit-ins include Neil Young himself as Neil has played Cortez with two of this week’s contestants.

Fun fact: the original take had an extra verse at the end that was lost due to a problem in the studio. When Neil was informed of the glitch he simply responded, “I never liked that verse anyway.” Checking in on last week, moe. and Umphrey’s McGee are still battling it out in the Can’t You Hear Me Knocking Cover Wars, so head on over there and help settle the score.
The Contestants:
Built To Spill: Single. Double. No, Triple Guitars! This twenty-minute romp was recorded during the 1999 Keep It Like A Secret Tour. We’ve got a lot of distinct voices this week, but perhaps none more unique than Built To Spill’s Doug Martsch. Source: Live

Last week we pointed you in the direction of a blog post made by former Grace Potter & The Nocturnals bass player Bryan Dondero where he ripped into Potter for her actions before, during and after his tenure in the band. We wanted to give an update on things that have happened since.

First, Dondero took the entry off of his website that same day. Perhaps he felt bad, perhaps he realized you win more bees with honey or perhaps his lawyer told him not to air his grievances publicly. Regardless of the reason, the only evidence of Dondero’s rant is the parts we quoted in our article.
GPN responded to Dondero’s diss through a statement by their management to Brent Hallenbeck of the Burlington Free Press…
“Many of the statements made by Bryan Dondero about the facts surrounding his leaving the band are inaccurate. Since Bryan left the band, we have accommodated many of his requests for additional compensation which go above and beyond the original contract he, and all band members, signed upon joining GPN. That original contract clearly states all compensation any departing band member will be entitled to upon leaving the band. The additional compensation that we are offering him goes beyond any contractual obligations we have with him and we offered this in the hopes of continuing a positive relationship with someone that we have great respect for. We are surprised and saddened by Bryan’s recent show of public disdain for us, particularly since we believed that an understanding had been reached that was acceptable to everyone. Despite Bryan’s response, we wish him only the best in his future endeavors.” [via Burlington Free Press]
A classy response to say the least. As we mentioned in our original post, there’s two sides to each story and the truth generally lies in the middle so we may never know what really happened between the two parties. In any case, we’ve got a gallery of stunning GPN photos from John Schulze that he took at Rothbury. READ ON to check ‘em out…
Ah, the truth – the hard-to-figure point that lies somewhere between the two sides of a story. Today, we got one side of the story thanks to a detailed explanation from bass player Bryan Dondero about why he left Grace Potter and the Nocturnals four months ago. In a very web 2.0 move, Dondero took Potter to task with a post on his blog.

[Potter and Dondero in happier times]
The bassist is in the middle of a contentious negotiation with the Potter Camp over proceeds from GP&tN’s 2007 release This Is Somewhere
and let us know exactly what he’s looking for and what he’s been offered…
My terms remain firm: along with the agreements made on NBTW and the other tracks that I have already signed off on, I am standing behind asking for 10% of This Is Somewhere from release through the life of the copyright. Thus far, you have firstly agreed that 10% was a fair number so long as it does not include the retroactive money (ie. money that was made in the publishing from songs appearing on Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill etc….) and would only be for a 5 year period. Then you agreed to include everything but Apologies. After you finally agreed to include Apologies, and the retroactive money, you decided to increase the amount that I owed the band since my leaving…
Towards the middle of his post Dondero basically transcribes a conversation he had with Potter that led to his departure which shows some diva behavior from both participants…
Grace: I feel like the things you do go against the grain of the rest of us.
Me: Like what? Give me an example.
Grace: This may sound vain, but the things you wear on stage…I think some of the things you do like putting your foot on the monitor or jump on the riser are at really inappropriate moments.

Rapper Eminem, Led Zep axeslinger Jimmy Page and Rolling Stone Ron Wood are among the presenters at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in Cleveland on April 4. Page will introduce and induct Jeff Beck. Run-DMC will be inducted by Eminem and Wood will induct Bobby Womack.

Let’s take one final look at what we missed this week…
Finally, lovable bassist Phil Lesh will perform Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks in its entirety tonight during a set with a The San Francisco Songwriters Coalition All-Stars at the fourth annual Rock to Relief concert at Slim’s in San Francisco. All proceeds from this sold-out show will benefit worthy causes such as Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross. Go Phil!
The great Animal Collective leak saga continues with the news that the email from band member Brian “Geologist” Weitz was a hoax. Someone hacked Geologist’s email address and sent off that email. Last night, Bradford Cox of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound weighed in on the situation on his blog. We’re sure all of these stories on every music blog will do wonders for sales of Merriweather Post Pavillion which drops on January 6.

Here’s one last look at interesting stories from around the webs…
One of our all time favorite blogs, Consequence of Sound, just put out their Year-End report highlighting the best of 2008. We know how hard it is to come up with creative original content day in and day out and we don’t know how Alex and the crew over there do it. Great work, guys.
Last week, soulful guitar slinger Ben Harper sneakily revealed his new band by launching a website for the project called the Relentless Seven. The bare bones website features just the band member’s names, a handful of tour dates along with three streaming songs for your listening pleasure. The tracks on the site include covers of Prince’s Purple Rain and Led Zeppelin’s Good Times, Bad Times and a blistering ten minute plus original: Serve Your Soul.
The Relentless Seven will hit the road for a five date California tour, with a promise on their site of more dates to come in 2009.
If you’re not fortunate enough to live out in Cali to catch Ben’s new band, than maybe you can make it out to one of these recently announced tours…
Finally, Yonder Mountain String Band will be hitting the road this coming February for another installment of their now annual Cabin Fever Tour. The bluegrass revivalists will focus their 21 date run on cities across the Southern part of the country with five shows spread throughout Florida. Those who order tickets from the band’s exclusive pre-sale will receive one free live Yonder song download that’s redeemable via the band’s llive download site. Act now as the pre-sale ends this coming Saturday.
This past Sunday night in Montreal, Vermont’s Grace Potter treated the stunned crowd at Petit Campus to a first-time played cover of My Morning Jacket’s Golden. While her band, The Nocturnals, took a pee break, Grace told the crowd that the last time she was in Montreal she had the pleasure of seeing My Morning Jacket perform. Potter went on to discuss how much she enjoyed the show and wanted to try out one of MMJ’s songs for them.

Truth be told, we were just looking for an excuse to post this picture again. But seriously, Potter’s soulful and gritty, yet disarmingly pretty and melodic delivery works really well on this fantastic cover. We also got a laugh at her Michael McDonald impression which follows Golden. But don’t take our word for it. Thanks to DaveO, you can download a MP3 of Grace Potter’s Golden and the banter before and after the track taken from taper Jahdawg’s recording over at Bt.etree. Be sure to check it out.
The Rolling Stones iconic tongue logo is arguable the famous and recognizable in all of rock and roll. The logo which first appeared on the band’s Sticky Fingers album, and was originally designed by John Pasche in 1970. So why this bit of rock history? Well, Pasche’s original design was sold at auction over the weekend for the hefty sum of $92,500 by the London-based Victoria and Albert Museum where it will hang.

Finally, indie-rockers The National have been ardent supporter of Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama for quite some time now. The band designed and has been selling their Mr. November t-shirt, with 100% of the money going directly to the Obama campaign, since July. As a possible way of saying thank you to the band, their song Fake Empire can now be heard in an official campaign commercial, take a look and listen (via Product Shop NYC)…

Can you imagine if you’re in a band going up against Radiohead a major festival? Thankfully the promoters of Lollapalooza spared someone the embarrassment of playing for an empty field by announcing that Radiohead will play unopposed on Friday night. Here’s the rest of the schedule for those hitting Chicago’s Grant Park on August 1 – 3. There aren’t too many conflicts at first glance.

Finally, the guys at iClips continue to keep themselves busy this summer. On Thursday they head to Winter Park to webcast the Sonic Bloom festival, while they are also broadcast the Popped! Music Festival direct from Philadelphia. After a few weeks off they head to Minnesota for the 10KLF on July 23-25.
iClips is at it again! Last weekend they webcasted three full days of Summer Camp performances (with minimal technical difficulties) and starting now, they move about 900 miles to the east to broadcast Mountain Jam live from Hunter Mountain.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be creating a personal multimedia presentation combining the likes of live music and playoff sports starting tonight.

We’re feeling all patriotic today thanks to these jaw dropping Grace Potter photos:

Last fall Gov’t Mule and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals teamed up for a memorable cross-country tour. It seems Grace and Warren must’ve hit it off, because they will be co-hosting the 2008 Jammy Awards at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 7. This isn’t the pair’s first go-around with the Jammys. Haynes has won four Jammys, while Grace and her band won the New Groove award in 2006. Tickets go onsale today at noon through jammys.com, and at the MSG box office without any surcharges.

As we told you earlier Phish will take home the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s ceremony. Hopefully the folks at Relix can get all four members t0 accept the award in person. And perhaps drop a tasty Harry Hood > Shafty > Harry Hood just for a little taste of what we’ve been missing. The full lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but we never met a Jammys lineup we haven’t liked.
