Grousing The Aisles VIII: 40 Acres

Johnny Cash – 9/3/73 SBD (FLAC)

This great recording of Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three comes from the band’s European tour — after all, the Man in Black had a big following in England. Cash plays a nice mix of his hits, traditional songs and covers, the latter camp including tunes like Me and Bobby McGee. Carl Perkins’ guitar playing adds some spark to Cash’s set, and this torrent also includes Perkins’ great opening set.

Hot Buttered Rum String Band – 12/15/06 SBD (STREAM, MP3, FLAC)

I’ll admit it, I was turned off by this band’s name and didn’t listen to them until recently. It was my loss, though, as this band kicks ass! Hot Buttered Rum (I still don’t like the name) has a rock edge that you don’t find with most bluegrass bands. 2006 has been a big year for them, and I expect we will be hearing plenty more in 2007. Cold name, hot tunes.

Widespread Panic – Bonnaroo ’03 SBD (FLAC)

Widespread Panic knows how to play Bonnaroo. They don’t just play five songs from their newest album mixed with some golden oldies. The Panic boys bring out incredible special guests and put them to work early and often: In 2003 the guests included Robert Randolph, Stanton Moore, and Warren Haynes. Not many soundboards circulate of George McConnell’s early days with the band, so it’s nice to see this show get into circulation.

NOTE: This show was pulled from bt.etree.org, probably at the insistence of the band. I’m including this entry because some people must have downloaded the show before it was pulled, and it should be circulating via gasp CD trades. Remember those?

Phish – 7/24/88 SBD (FLAC)

I had a crappy-sounding copy of about 40 minutes of this show, but this week a terrific new copy has surfaced. Phish spent many long hours working out their sound at Nectar’s in Vermont, including this three-set beauty. Ten of the 24 tracks from this show are covers, which is pretty atypical. Standouts include Light Up or Leave Me Alone, Jesus Left Chicago and Weekapaug Groove.

MMW – 9/30/96 AUD (FLAC)

In September of 1996, Medeski, Martin, and Wood were the house band of the Knitting Factory. Every Tuesday night the band would throw a Shack Party, inviting their favorite musicians up to jam. This torrent includes the third shack party, which included some mind-blowing improvisation with Oren Bloewdow and Stephen Bernstein, among others. After years of only poor-sounding tapes circulating, “The Shack Project” has found some pristine sources that accentuate the music instead of taking away from it.

Grateful Dead – 7/12/76 Soundcheck (DVD)

It’s not everyday you get to check out video of the Grateful Dead rehearsing. So run, don’t walk, to download this pro-shot DVD footage of the Dead soundchecking at San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater. The highlights include the newly reunited band working out Dancin’, Stella Blue, and a one of a kind version of Eyes of the World.

So what are you listening to this holiday season? Anything awesome?

  1. That widespread show is back up on etree. The guy also posted a couple other soundboards from Bonnaroo 03. Get em while they’re hot. Those are the only soundboards I’ve seen from any of the Bonnaroos.

  2. He took it down off eTree, but there’s a companion Ben Harper soundboard to go with the Jack Johnson soundboard. It’s posted over on Digitalpanic in the “Friends of Panic” section. You know, if you’re in to Jack Johnson, or bro rape, or whatever…
