Couch Tour Alert: MTV To Webcast Hangout Music Festival

UPDATE 1:30PM ET 5/18: Unfortunately MTV has revised the webcast schedule and many acts we were very much looking forward to have been removed. We’ve updated the schedule below. [Hat Tip - Ira Morris]

The Hangout Music Fest kicked off last night in Gulf Shores, AL and we thought we’d only get to hear second hand reports since no webcast had been announced. That changed this morning when MTV revealed they would be offering two feeds live from the fest featuring many of most anticipated performances. In addition, MTV Networks will provide television updates and highlights across MTV, VH1, CMT, MTV2, MTV Hits, MTV Jams, VH1 Classic, CMT Pure and Palladia.

The webcast begins at 12:30 ET this afternoon and will run through Sunday night. HT faves The Breeders, Toots And The Maytals, Jim James, Passion Pit, Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers, Gov’t Mule, The Roots, The Black Crowes, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Trey Anastasio Band and Stevie Wonder will be among the acts broadcast. Leftovers: Jack White to Headline Hangout Festival 2012

Shortly after Sasquatch! organizers announced the 2012 lineup, which has Jack White at the top of the bill, Jack’s publicist put out a press release that mentions the new solo artist will also headline the 2012 Hangout Music Fest ahead of the official announcement…oops. Rather than pretend the news hadn’t leaked, the festival’s Twitter feed came alive with word that White will indeed headline Hangout and that the rest of the initial lineup will be announced on Tuesday.

Here’s six other stories of note as we end the week…

Finally, tomorrow marks radio station KPFA’s annual Grateful Dead marathon hosted by David Gans. Gans promises lots of rare recordings from the archive including unreleased Jerry Garcia Band material as well as live performances from The Fall Risk and David Nelson Band. You can tune in live over the internet starting tomorrow, February 4, at 9AM PST.

Hangout Music Fest 2012 Dates Announced

Earlier this year the 2011 edition of the Hangout Music Fest graduated to the top tier of music festivals after selling out two weeks in advance. Today, organizers announced that Hangout will return to the white sand beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 18 – 20.

Early-bird tickets for the 2012 event go on sale next Friday, November 18, at 10AM CST for $159. Capacity for the Hangout Fest was 35,000 in 2011 and as of this summer promoter Shaul Zislin had no plans to increase the capacity for the 2012 event. This year’s lineup was announced on February 1, so expect a similar time frame for the 2012 event.

The Hangout Music Fest came onto the scene in 2010 boasting a lineup that featured Zac Brown Band, John Legend, Trey Anastasio and TAB, Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, The Black Crowes, and Flaming Lips. Attendees raved about watching bands play on a beach and the bevy of nearby and luxurious accommodations. While the inaugural festival didn’t sell out, the 2011 event did thanks to an eclectic lineup headlined by Paul Simon, Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket, Primus and the Flaming Lips.

Briefly: Hangout Fest 2012 Dates Picked

Written by on 08.04.2011 | Hangout Music Festival

The breakout story of the festival season thus far was the overwhelming success of the Hangout Music Festival both in terms of attendance and the music provided. Hangout organizer Shaul Zislin plans to bring the fest back to Gulf Shores, AL next year and has submitted a permit request from the City Council that would see the third annual event take place on May 18 – 20. There are a few logistical issues to work out and in this piece from the local Press-Register it seems there are a few local residents and business owners who are against the return of Hangout. Let’s hope they are able to sort their problems and that Hangout comes back next year.

Review: Hangout Festival, Day Three

Hangout Festival @ Gulf Shores, AL – May 22

The third and final day of the 2nd Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, AL was perhaps the hottest of the festival. There was hot and then there was scorching hot where moving across the beach was a task. For the better half of three days I trucked around barefoot, burying my feet and squishing sand between my toes. However Sunday was so hot, walking barefoot in the sand felt similar to walking on a bed of hot coals.

[All photos by Allison Taich]

I left “home” early to take a dip in the ocean with plans to hit Hangout in time to celebrate my favorite one-man-band Keller Williams. Unfortunately Keller was billed at the same time as Old Crow Medicine Show, but I made the decision to stick with Keller. The Sunday sun was ruthless, making Keller the best wake and bake of Hangout. I am confident in saying that his set was responsible for the worst sun burn I endured all weekend.

Heat aside Keller buoyantly bounced around stage creating live loops linked to a free flow of words. His set took shape with interpretations of the Grateful Dead’s Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain, melted into his signature Freakshow, which Keller noted “bass by the Grateful Dead words by Ani DiFranco.” He then blazed through the ultimate “Crazy” medley, combining songs of past and present emulating a “crazy” theme, sampling everyone from Patsy Cline to Gnarls Barkley.
