Hors d’Oeuvres: Return of Give Us The Money Lebowski

It’s been a while since we’ve mentioned the name Give Us The Money Lebowski around these parts as the band’s guitarist (and HT contributor) Nick Setteducato currently resides in New Zealand, but we’re excited to see GUTML will make their triumphant return, complete with “special guests,” on January 4th at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The gig is a fundraiser for the Rocking Out Cancer foundation, an organization founded by GUTML guitarist and cancer survivor Chris Cartelli which aims to raise funds which support clinical trials in cancer research through live music events. GUTML always peppers their set with plenty of covers and in the past they’ve torn through Godzilla, First Tube, Psycho Killer, Carini and Helicopters among other rock staples. Tickets are available here.

You can always count on Keller Williams to make contest winner announcements interesting. Such was the case for the one-man-band’s contest to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Nashville to watch K-Dub perform with The Travelin’ McCoury’s. Watch as Keller, aka The Lone Ranger, picks the winner…

Hors d’Oeuvres: Jackie Greene On His Online Absence

Singer/songwriter and HT fave Jackie Greene recently decided to take a break from social networking. Over the course of the 17-day hiatus close friends he encountered in “the real world” told him online reactions to his sudden disappearance included “Is He Dead?” “Did He Retire?” and “I Hope He’s Okay.” Turns out the opposite was true, Jackie was having too good a time living his life to be bothered with Twitter and Facebook. In a thought-provoking blog entry titled “The Evaporation of The Genuine Self,” the brilliant musician explains why he took the break, why he’s bewildered at the reaction to his hiatus and why he felt the need to return to social networking.

Here’s six other stories of note on this last Monday of July…

Before we go, a Tenacious D concert at the House of Blues in Las Vegas was cut short on Saturday night when an attendee was stabbed as part of a melee that broke out. The stabbing led to Tenacious D leaving the stage about halfway through their planned performance. The LVPD is still investigating the incident after releasing two suspected participants who have been cleared.

Hors d’Oeuvres: Potter’s Cartoon Debut

Grace Potter’s star continues to rise as the singer and longtime HT fave has told Rolling Stone that she will provide the voice for a character on the next installment of Prep & Landing, an ABC special produced by Disney/Pixar that will air later this year. According to Potter people shouldn’t get too excited as she doesn’t actually say a word, “My character mumbles and makes noises with her mouth – which is kind of awesome.” Awesome, indeed.

Potter also revealed that she has written her first-ever Christmas song titled Naughty, Naughty Children that will be featured in Prep & Landing. In other Grace news, the Vermonter joined Stevie Wonder, Rickey Minor, Sharon Jones at last night’s Global Soul concert at the Hollywood Bowl. You can watch the finale here.

Let’s take a tour of the web for six stories of note…

Before we go, we wanted to point you in the direction of this post from Consequence of Sound which rounds up all of the fake Coachella 2012 posters that have surfaced on the web in recent weeks. Hors d’Oeuvres: Record Store Day a Success

We had a feeling that this year’s Record Store Day was a success from all the buzz and first-hand stories we heard last Saturday, but we can now quantify RSD 2011 based on the SoundScan figures. Indie record stores sold 13% more albums during the week of Record Store Day in 2011 against the same period in 2010. More importantly, album sales at independent record stores increased more than 39% during RSD week compared to the previous week.

Let’s hope this trend continues in 2012 and that more artists continue to put out exclusive Record Store Day material with a focus on full-length releases. Also, while we’re making suggestions, how about upping limited edition releases by 1,000 or 2,000 copies so more fans can get RSD vinyl at the stores instead of from flippers on eBay.

Here’s a look at six other stories of note…

Finally, this oral history detailing the Beastie Boys early days ranks among the best articles we’ve come across this year. Writer Amos Barshad was able to convince nearly every collaborator who particpated in the group’s rise to fame to participate, making for a wonderful read. Speaking of the B-Boys, let’s see if you think as highly of Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 as we do…
