There was plenty of live music last week that didn’t take place in Mexico at Mayan Holidaze, but since the taper Z-Man supplied more than enough material to dedicate this entire piece to this festival, I thought why not? Our first segment of music is Liar from 30db’s 2010 album One Man Show followed by the set-closing cover of The Good Times Are Killing Me by Modest Mouse. While Brendan Bayliss and Jeff Austin already have plenty of tour dates on the books with their primary bands, 30db doesn’t have any future scheduled dates. They are both scheduled to play at Summer Camp 2011, perhaps that will be the host of the next 30db gig.

Normally, I find the month of January to be a pretty uneventful one in the world of live music. Bands play big winter tours often leading up to a big New Year’s Eve blowout, and the beginning of the calendar year seems to be a rest from the road. So I was surprised when I did my search of the Live Music Archive and found 84 recordings already uploaded at press time. We’ve got Cracker covering an album in its entirety (and that wasn’t the only album in that show), the Disco Biscuits getting drummer Allen Aucoin back onstage, Grace Potter busting out a MMJ cover, an interesting sequence of music from Tim Palmieri and a couple of classics from the Tom Tom Club.

Cracker – Loser

Camper Van Beethoven & Cracker played three joint shows last week and at each one Cracker performed their 1993 album Kerosene Hat and CVB played Key Lime Pie, their album from 1989. You can read a review of the NYC show from Richard Gehr over at SPIN.com. For the audio from Kerosene Hat, I have selected their cover of Loser by the Grateful Dead. Camper Van Beethoven [tour dates] next plays February 18th at New Parish in Oakland, CA. No future tour dates currently on the books for Cracker. Well, we flip the calendar year over to 2011 and it of course takes me a little while to make the adjustment. At first I put in 2010 and got a little confused. Right, 2011. OK, back on track. A lot of the selections this week all come from either Jam Cruise or moe’s destination concerts down in the Dominican Republic. A Caribbean edition if you will.

As I was watching the tapes roll in this week from recent shows, I had two thoughts about possible themes for this week’s edition: 1) Acoustic Performances/Sets 2) The Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. Not wanting to choose, we’re going to have a jumbo-sized Last Week’s Sauce and bring you six performances. We start out with three from the acoustic section: The Black Crowes, Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds and Jeff Tweedy [with a little help from his friends]. Then, we’ll switch into high gear with some highlights from Asheville with help from Steve Miller, Umphrey’s McGee with John Bell and the brand-spanking-new Warren Haynes Band. The Black Crowes have only three shows left before they start their next indefinite hiatus – three more shows at San Francisco’s historic Fillmore Auditorium. And they have already played three shows there so far. The locals are expecting big things this weekend in terms of special guests and I’m sure the Crowes will not disappoint. Recently, it’s been a formula of Acoustic Set I and Electric Set II and this run of shows has been no exception. These two hits closed Sunday’s first set.

I am always at the mercy of what happened the previous week when I write this piece – and I like it when the bands make it so easy on me. We’ve got Club D’Elf welcoming last minute, world-renowned special guests as they attempt to raise money to spring a fellow collaborator out of an INS prison. Then, there is moe., who 20 years into their career manages to debut five new songs at their rescheduled Halloween gig. Perpetual Groove paid an early tribute to John Lennon – I think. And finally, we get to feature The Radiators from New Orleans, a band that has logged over 4,000 shows and is currently on an extended farewell tour.

Club D’Elf – Zeed al Maal

Club D’elf, a rotating cast of musicians fronted by bassist Mike Rivard, welcomed a very special guest last week – Hassan Hakmoun. Both the audio and video feature Hassan’s contributions. Merchandise sales from the show also went to benefit Kousmat Mohammed, another D’Elf collaborator that had been detained in an INS facility, an all too common tale for international musicians. The good news? He’s out thanks to an outpouring of contributions. Club D’Elf [tour dates] has a few upcoming shows in Japan with John Medeski on keyboards. The next US gig is scheduled for January 7th at The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, MA.

You may have read a recent Washington Post article examining how some of the Indie rockers are growing more comfortable coming out of the jamband-fan-closet. One area which I’d like to see more crossover in is to have more bands implement open taping policies. That’s why I was ecstatic to pull up recordings on my weekly Live Music Archive search from bands like Blitzen Trapper and The National. Good for them, now whatever happened to the policy that MGMT promised months back only to have the idiots at Sony make them retract it? Note: Hidden Track previously contacted Sony for a comment, was promised one, and then received nothing. Oh but Hidden Track readers and LWS Podcast faithfuls, don’t worry – we still remember that Phish tour started last week too.

Biltzen Trapper – Destroyer Of The Void

The P4K album review of Destroyer Of The Void describes the title track as such – “ambitiously steamrolls over decades of canonical popular music, squishing it into an epic suite that gathers Beatles harmonies, sci-fi synths, classic rock guitars, country-rock twang, and AOR sentimentality into one big, ballsy package.” Pretty serious stuff, and they are right – it’s an amazing piece. It’s nice to hear the band has a good live arrangement of it as well. Blitzen Trapper [tour dates] plays tonight at the Dallas House of Blues.

Built To Spill – The Plan, Ripple

“The New Grateful Dead” has been tossed about in the past describing Built To Spill, it’s a comparison that a lot of Deadheads completely don’t understand – but I think it has some merit once you get past the obvious differences in overall sound. Well this tour, which is massive by the way with very few days off, they have been playing Ripple. The cover starts off slow and somewhat true to the original, but by the end it is a full-on rocker. I hope you don’t mind, but since Built To Spill tends to take a lot of time between songs, I have removed a big chunk of dead space between these two tunes. BTS [tour dates] plays the first of two shows at The Paradise in Boston tonight. I’ll see ‘ya there tomorrow.

The Black Crowes – My Morning Song, Miracle To Me
